SUMMARY:Education & Training – Anonymous Critique with Lynn Cates and Willa Friedman
DESCRIPTION:Willa Friedman\nLynn Cates\nTake this opportunity to get feedback on your images. Submit images you are using new software to process; images you like but feel may need just a little help\, and/or images you may consider for a competition. The sole purpose of anonymous critique is to help you grow as a photographer.  You will not be identified unless you choose to make comments or ask questions about your images.   You can also ask questions a bit more anonymously using Zoom chat sent by direct message only to E & T coordinator Eva Lanyi. \nThe firm deadline for image submission is 6 p.m. on Monday\, March 22\, 2021\, to allow time for Mike Whalen to anonymize the images and for Lynn and Willa to review them before the March 30 meeting. \nYou can submit up to three images.  Please prioritize them by naming them as follows: number_title\, where number is 1\, 2\, or 3\, followed by an underscore and anything you’d like for a title. For example\, “1_Red House on the Prairie.” Putting the number first will allow us to sort the images so that at least one image from every photographer is critiqued. Beyond that\, Lynn and Willa will critique as many images as time allows. \nPlease attach your images to an email and send it to critique-2020@nvps.org\, sized the same as for competition:  jpeg images with \na maximum of 1400 pixels wide and 1050 pixels high (vertical shots have the same 1050 pixel height requirement)\, sRGB workspace. We recommend the resolution of your jpeg images be 127 pixels per inch (PPI\, sometimes called dots per inch or DPI) or less (e.g.\, 127\, 96 or 72 PPI) for best results on Zoom.  If you send the images from Mac mail\, please select the “actual size” option from the “image size” menu in the upper right corner. \nQuestions? Please contact the Education and Training Coordinator\, Eva Lanyi. Her contact information can be found at Board Contacts.

SUMMARY:Education & Training – Portfolio Project: 2nd Preliminary Review
DESCRIPTION:Second Preliminary Review\, Portfolio Project – features the preliminary review of the second half of this year’s Portfolio Project (PP) submissions.  We have an amazing variety of subject matter and approaches\, some of which have been inspired by the pandemic restrictions surrounding us. Ginger Werz-Petricka\, Willa Siegel\, and Brenda Wilson\, co-chairs of the Portfolio Project will offer their feedback on key aspects of each portfolio presented: the artist statement\, how it reflects the portfolio content\, and the cohesiveness of portfolio images. The preliminary review gives a good opportunity to focus upon the artist statement\, and whether it clearly and concisely tells the viewer what the subject is\, why the artist selected this subject\, and how the goal of the project was accomplished.

SUMMARY:Education & Training – Abstract Photography with Mike Whalen
DESCRIPTION: \nProgram\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCurves by Mike Whalen\nMost photography is based on capturing real\, easily recognizable subjects such as a people\, places\, or things. Abstract photography is different. Instead\, the objective is to look for simpler visual elements such as: shapes and colors; lines and curves; textures\, tones\, and patterns. These simple elements become the dominant points of interest in abstract photos. \n \n\n\n The sources could be either naturally occurring or man-made\, and of any size. Frequently\, small areas of larger physical objects can make interesting abstracts. The images could be found as-is\, staged or generated in-camera. They could also be further altered within a computer via post-processing to produce even more dramatic results. \n \n\n\n The scope of  abstract photography is quite broad and definitions may vary depending on who you talk to or what you read. To add even more confusion\, images could be totally abstract – having no connection to physical reality\, or partially abstract – by mixing both physical and abstract elements together in the same photo.   \n \n\n\n This presentation will show a broad variety of both abstract and semi-abstract images\, and in many cases\, how they were created will be described. All images are photographs or derived from photographs.\n \n\n\n Bio\n\n\n As a teen\, Mike learned a few basic photo tips from his father\, an artist and photographer. He dabbled with film cameras in the 80’s and 90’s\, and after that\, played with several digital point-and-shoots.  However\, his interest became more passionate after purchasing a basic DSLR in 2006.\n \n\n\n Mike joined NVPS in 2009 after learning about the club from fellow member\, Willa Friedman. He held board positions from 2010 to the present\, including President in 2013. He received several distinguished service awards and multiple competition awards thru the years including image of the year.\n \n\n\n Before COVID\, Mike volunteered weekly as a pet photographer for the Fairfax County Animal Shelter and\, and as an event photographer for charitable organization’s such as: The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition and The Epilepsy Foundation of America.\n \n\n\n Mike says that joining NVPS was a significant step in furthering his passion for photography. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nExamples of Abstract Images \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReferences \n\n\n\nBelow is a small sampling of online articles and galleries showing abstract photography. SUMMARY:Education & Training - Bird Photography with Bill Corbett
DESCRIPTION:Bird photography is for everyone interested in the wildlife\, beauty\, and light that can be found just outside your kitchen window or far beyond.  Bill’s presentation will detail photography of birds at rest and in flight\, for all levels of interest and expertise\, from beginner to advanced. \nBill’s illustrated presentation will cover five topics\, with each discussed in terms of the basics and how to move up a learning curve. \n\nEquipment:  From using a point and shoot superzoom to handling big glass on a gimbal head.\nExposure:  Three words — Shoot in manual.  Three more words — Expose for highlights.\nAutofocus:  Luck favors the prepared.  “Spray and pray” favors those who know and use various features offered by their camera’s autofocus.\nCraft:  “Sun and wind behind” is one of a number of well-known strategies for bird photographers to arrive at better opportunities\, and to come away with better images.\nSetups:  Feeders + flashes = fun.\n\nHope you can make it! \nBill Corbett is a bird and travel photographer who enjoys color\, action and texture in his pictures.  A photojournalist in college\, Bill resumed spending serious amounts of time on photography when digital cameras came along.  He is a Nikon shooter who prefers a long lens and who uses a flash anytime he can. Bill enjoys competing his images at NVPS and making albums from pictures he and his wife Judy take on their travels. \nBill and Judy moved three summers ago to southern Loudoun from McLean\, where they raised their three kids.  He is still just beginning to explore the photo opportunities in Loudoun and west of there.   They spend most of the summer in Delaware\, where Bill takes his camera to wildlife refuges regularly.  His main photography goal is to keep on doing what he’s been doing.  It is fun. \nBill is the secretary and a former president of Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions (formerly Nature Visions)\, a member of NVPS for the past ten or so years\, and the winner of a small number of photography ribbons and awards from those two organizations. \nBill is a retired foreign service officer and trade negotiator who served in Washington\, Korea and Japan and enjoyed/suffered through more than a few travels to other points as a minor representative of American diplomacy.  Follow him on Facebook for his views on current events; he doesn’t post his pictures there. \n

SUMMARY:Education & Training - A Workflow from Raw to Print with Gary Perlow
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will be an in-depth description of a linear logical approach to photograph editing that will take you from a raw file straight out of camera through Photoshop to printing.  It will be geared to novice and experienced users of Photoshop.  Topics discussed will shed light on what should be done\, when it should be done\, and why it should be done. \nThe programs used will be Bridge\, Adobe Camera Raw\, and Photoshop.  The why and wherefore of raw processing will be discussed in depth.  Then we will take a picture into Photoshop and demonstrate the steps to edit non-destructively and get the absolute most out of your picture to produce a “clean” image\, before diving into artistic effects\, cropping and sharpening. \nBio: \nGary first picked up a camera about 7 years ago to photograph his daughter’s academic athletic events.  He realized the powerful effect that careful post-processing could have on an image\, finding that the marriage of the two\, photography and Photoshop\, brought a welcome and readily accessible outlet for creativity.  In fact\, he enjoys post-processing at least as much as he does taking photographs. \nGary shoots a wide variety of images that hopefully have the potential to arouse an emotional response: portraits\, nature\, landscapes\, architecture\, and things.  In coming years\, he hopes to get more into creative\, imaginative edits and mood-type photography that transcend reality\, if ever so slightly.  In the 2019 Nature Visions Expo\, he won best landscape\, best wildlife\, and best in show.  This past year at the club\, he won the advanced digital photographer of the year\, the advanced color prints photographer of the year\, and the advanced versatile photographer of the year. \nGary enjoys talking Photoshop\, and would invite anyone at NVPS at any level to discuss anything about post-processing with him.

SUMMARY:Education & Training - The Joys of Water Photography with Lynn Cates
DESCRIPTION:Lynn will share her love of the creative aspects of water photography. Moving water is fascinating whether it is in majestic waterfalls or tiny streams. It has many moods – from lively and energetic to peaceful and calm. Lynn will discuss how to capture some of these moods with techniques she uses in the field such as varying shutter speeds and filters. She also will discuss techniques she uses in post-processing to accentuate lines\, shapes\, and textures to help bring out the feelings she wants to evoke. Lynn also will talk about photographing reflections and water droplets. \nLynn became serious about photography in June 2015. That month she began shooting RAW at a workshop in Acadia National Park\, and she took Corey Hilz’ class “Lightroom in a Day”  and started processing her images. She is passionate about combining her photography with her cross-country road trips. She loves her Nikon D850. You can view her work at rdtrpr.com. \n \n \n \n \n \n Loading...\n \n \n \n \n \n Taking too long?\n \n \n \n Reload document \n |\n \n Open in new tab \n \n \n \n Download

SUMMARY:Education & Training - Understanding Photoshop Layers with Jim Sinsheimer
DESCRIPTION:As we all know\, Photoshop is an awesome editing tool for photographers. It has many choices with regard to tools that provide virtually unlimited editing possibilities. One of the most versatile capabilities is use of layers in the workflow process. In Jim’s presentation\, he will review what a layer is\, the different types of layers\, what basic editing can be done with them\, and discuss masking\, which unlocks the full potential of Photoshop layers. The presentation will be live (Jim will do actual editing). However\, don’t feel you’ll need to take copious notes for he has prepared a PowerPoint file of the editing to be posted on the NVPS website. \nJim’s introduction to photography was at around 7 years old when his Dad converted a coal bin into his darkroom. His interest really took off in college. Jim has been a member of NVPS for two years\, having moved to Virginia from Southern California to be with his grandson and his family. Jim’s work has been published in Black and White Magazine\, LensWork\, and will be soon featured again in LensWork’s “Our Magnificent Planet.” He’s had showings at the California Department of Transportation Headquarters\, the 1650 Gallery in Los Angeles and currently in a large digital wall at the 71 South Wacker building in Chicago. For several years\, his images have won awards at the Orange County (CA) fair. \nJim has been a Canon shooter forever – he still has his FTB\, TL and F1 cameras as “museum” pieces. Travel photography to Finland for the Northern Lights was planned\, but is now on hold due to the pandemic.

SUMMARY:Education & Training: An Overview of Landscape Photography with James Norman
DESCRIPTION:Landscape photography gives us opportunities to visit beautiful locations\, see amazing sights\, and even bring home and share a small portion of what we experience.  And you don’t need to travel to another continent or lug a backpack full of heavy\, expensive gear to find and capture striking images.  With minimal equipment and your own creative enthusiasm\, landscape photography will reward you with both images and memories.\n \nJim will provide some suggestions on how you can make the most of your landscape opportunities — planning and preparation\, suggested equipment\, composition\, exposure\, and more. The emphasis of this presentation is fieldwork; processing\, as important as it is\, will be discussed only in passing.\n \nJim is a long‑time member of NVPS\, as well as the Loudoun Photo Club\, NANPA\, and the Alaska Society of Outdoor and Nature Photographers\, and most of his photography centers on landscapes.\n \nSeveral of Jim’s recent landscape photos:

SUMMARY:Education & Training - Artistic Image Processing with Roger Lancaster
DESCRIPTION:Education & Training – Artistic Image Processing with Roger Lancaster \nRoger Lancaster has been a member of NVPS since 2009. He first started his journey into photography as a 6-year-old when his grandfather\, a photojournalist\, let him use his fold up Kodak camera. He delved a bit more when his family gave him the old 35mm Pentax film camera\, and as his kids grew older immersed himself in photos of their sports contests\, concerts\, vacations\, etc. However\, upon retirement\, he pursued fine art photography with a passion. As he says\, it was a hobby that got out of control! He has won numerous awards for his photography\, the most recent being Photographer of the Year for Color Prints Class 3 from NVPS in 2018. He also has had his images printed in many magazines and photo journals. \nThe world of digital photography opened his eyes to the creative aspect of the craft\, and he now gets as much enjoyment out of the artistic aspects of post-processing as he does the actual shooting of the image. In fact\, his business card now refers to him as a Photographer/Image Artist. In his session at NVPS on January 14\, Roger will discuss and illustrate his approach to the artistic aspect of post-processing and will cover such subjects as use of brushes\, filters\, and\, plugin tools in Photoshop that allow artistic expression\, use of actions in Photoshop\, converting to monochrome\, plus other topics. If there are specific topics in the general area of artistic expression and image manipulation that you would like to cover\, please let him know prior to his presentation. \n

SUMMARY:Education & Training: Anonymous Critique with Fran Bastress and Kathryn Mohrman
DESCRIPTION:Education and Training: December 10\, 2019 \nAnonymous Critique with Fran Bastress and Kathryn Mohrman \nTake this opportunity to get feedback on your images. Submit images you are experimenting with new software; images that need just a little help\, and/or images you may consider for a competition. The sole purpose of anonymous critique is to help you grow as a photographer.  You will not be identified unless you choose to make comments or ask questions about your images.  \nThe firm deadline for image submission is 6 p.m. on Tuesday\, December 3\, to allow time for our computer team to anonymize the images and for Fran and Kathryn to review them before the December 10 meeting. Beyond that\, Fran and Kathryn will critique as many images as time allows. \nPlease submit your images to critique-2019@nvps.org\, sized the same as for competition:  jpeg images with a maximum of 1400 pixels wide and 1050 pixels high (vertical shots have the same 1050 pixel height requirement)\, sRGB workspace. We recommend your images be set to 127 pixels per inch (PPI\, sometimes called dots per inch or DPI) or less (e.g.\, 127\, 96 or 72 PPI) for best results with our projector.  If you send the images from Mac mail\, please select the “actual size” option from the “image size” menu in the upper right corner. \nQuestions?  Please contact the Education and Training Coordinator\, Eva Lanyi\, at education-2019@nvps.org.  \n

SUMMARY:Education & Training: Image Critique – Assessing Your Own\, and Others’\, Images with Willa Friedman\, Ginger Werz-Petricka\, and Mike Whalen
DESCRIPTION:Speakers’ Panel for Education and Training: The panel will include members: Willa Friedman\, Ginger Werz-Petricka and Mike Whalen \nThe November 12 E & T panel discussion will offer a basic methodology of assessing images\, whether your own or someone else’s\, with a goal of making effective\, impactful images.  Realizing that all image creation and critique is subjective\, the panel will discuss questions that should be considered when photographing or assessing an image.  The goal of the session is to help club members improve their own photography and increase understanding of the factors under consideration in image critique and/or competition. \nFor example: When preparing to make a photograph\, the first questions to ask are: what is the subject or purpose of my image?  What am I trying to convey?  When looking at an image\, the questions a viewer asks are: what am I supposed to see or feel?  What is the point of this image? \nAll image creation and critique flow from the above basic questions.  A number of discrete\, identifiable factors goes into answering the questions: there are technical aspects such as focus\, lighting\, and contrast; and compositional aspects such as subject interest\, subject placement\, and image clutter.   Ginger\, Willa\, and Mike will provide examples\, offer their insights\, and take questions.  \nIf you have specific questions you’d like them to addresses\, please send them by November 1 to education-2019@nvps.org.

SUMMARY:Navigating the NVPS Website and Gallery with Mike Whalen; Portfolio Project Update with Ginger Werz-Petricka; Also\, Get Ready for the Annual Swap Meet
DESCRIPTION:MikeWhalen \nThis year\, October is one of those months with 5 Tuesdays\, so for the October 29 meeting\, we will have a special presentation by former club president\, Mike Whalen on navigating the club’s website. Last year Mike overhauled the NVPS website and gallery\, giving them both a new look and feel. He will explain the design philosophy and guide us thru the menus\, making it easier to find what you’re looking for.  There really is allot there\, but with a few tips\, the website can be a powerful tool. A quick review of the gallery will also be provided.  Please bring any questions you may have regarding the website or gallery. \nAdditionally\, Ginger will give a brief update on the Portfolio Project\, show several gallery examples from past portfolios\, and discuss the artist statement. \nWe will also be having our customary “Swap-Meet” on this 5th Tuesday\, so bring any equipment\, books\, magazines\, and etc. that you don’t need/want any longer and see if someone else could use it!  These items can be sold\, traded\, or given away\, it’s up to you! If you’re bringing  gear\, come early (7:00PM)  and display it on the back tables.

SUMMARY:Education & Training: Changing from Nikon to Micro Four-Thirds; the Good\, the Bad\, and the OK with Wayne Guenther
DESCRIPTION:This presentation provides Wayne’s perspective on the decision process to leave a long-standing camera system\, and a review of my learning curve to adapt to Micro Four-Thirds.  He will have an orientation of the features so we can understand the problems and successes\, but this is not a technical review. Nor is it a system comparison beyond some basic considerations\, one of which (the user interface) still gives me headaches.  If you are using a point and shoot and are thinking of getting into an interchangeable lens system\, this talk may helpful to see pros and cons regarding Micro Four-Thirds. And many of the aspects he will discuss apply to any camera system change; there are pleasant surprises\, disappointments\, and unintended consequences.  Since the Olympus and Panasonic family isn’t widely used\, at the end of the platform presentation we’ll break\, then assemble around tables in the rear to touch and feel the equipment\, and to look at a variety of prints with metadata so you can see what the camera/lens can do.
