We have been doing that for a number of years.  The key word in the definition is: “public”; it need not be on the street. \nOur presentation will explain what you can do legally in public spaces\, as told by lawyers and court decisions. You do have the right to photograph in public places. \nThe “decisive moment” will be explored as shown by Henri Cartier-Bresson and other photographers\, famous\, not so famous\, and us! It’s not always what it seems. \nAlso\, getting over the reluctance to take street photos or fear of getting punched in the face will be discussed including safe and friendly places for street photography. There are interesting places where you can practice street photography\, sometimes even with the cooperation of your subjects. \n Bob & Willa Friedman Biographies: \n As a teenager\, Bob started his photography journey with a darkroom in his parent’s basement\, which he inherited from his brother. The first thing he did when we bought our house was to build a darkroom in the basement. \nWilla first became involved in photography as an instructor at the American Museum of Natural History in New York\, where she photographed wildlife in city parks for the NYC schools\, and her images were published in a fourth grade textbook.  \nIf selling a few photos makes us pros\, then we are pros. Abstract photography is different. Instead\, the objective is to look for simpler visual elements such as: shapes and colors; lines and curves; textures\, tones\, and patterns. These simple elements become the dominant points of interest in abstract photos. \n \n\n\n The sources could be either naturally occurring or man-made\, and of any size. Frequently\, small areas of larger physical objects can make interesting abstracts. The images could be found as-is\, staged or generated in-camera. They could also be further altered within a computer via post-processing to produce even more dramatic results. \n \n\n\n The scope of  abstract photography is quite broad and definitions may vary depending on who you talk to or what you read. To add even more confusion\, images could be totally abstract – having no connection to physical reality\, or partially abstract – by mixing both physical and abstract elements together in the same photo.   \n \n\n\n This presentation will show a broad variety of both abstract and semi-abstract images\, and in many cases\, how they were created will be described. All images are photographs or derived from photographs.\n \n\n\n Bio\n\n\n As a teen\, Mike learned a few basic photo tips from his father\, an artist and photographer. He dabbled with film cameras in the 80’s and 90’s\, and after that\, played with several digital point-and-shoots.  However\, his interest became more passionate after purchasing a basic DSLR in 2006.\n \n\n\n Mike joined NVPS in 2009 after learning about the club from fellow member\, Willa Friedman. He held board positions from 2010 to the present\, including President in 2013. Lynn also will talk about photographing reflections and water droplets. \nLynn became serious about photography in June 2015. It has many choices with regard to tools that provide virtually unlimited editing possibilities. One of the most versatile capabilities is use of layers in the workflow process. In Jim’s presentation\, he will review what a layer is\, the different types of layers\, what basic editing can be done with them\, and discuss masking\, which unlocks the full potential of Photoshop layers. The presentation will be live (Jim will do actual editing). However\, don’t feel you’ll need to take copious notes for he has prepared a PowerPoint file of the editing to be posted on the NVPS website. \nJim’s introduction to photography was at around 7 years old when his Dad converted a coal bin into his darkroom. His interest really took off in college. Jim has been a member of NVPS for two years\, having moved to Virginia from Southern California to be with his grandson and his family. Jim’s work has been published in Black and White Magazine\, LensWork\, and will be soon featured again in LensWork’s “Our Magnificent Planet.” He’s had showings at the California Department of Transportation Headquarters\, the 1650 Gallery in Los Angeles and currently in a large digital wall at the 71 South Wacker building in Chicago. As he says\, it was a hobby that got out of control! He has won numerous awards for his photography\, the most recent being Photographer of the Year for Color Prints Class 3 from NVPS in 2018. He also has had his images printed in many magazines and photo journals. \nThe world of digital photography opened his eyes to the creative aspect of the craft\, and he now gets as much enjoyment out of the artistic aspects of post-processing as he does the actual shooting of the image. In fact\, his business card now refers to him as a Photographer/Image Artist. In his session at NVPS on January 14\, Roger will discuss and illustrate his approach to the artistic aspect of post-processing and will cover such subjects as use of brushes\, filters\, and\, plugin tools in Photoshop that allow artistic expression\, use of actions in Photoshop\, converting to monochrome\, plus other topics.
