SUMMARY:Education & Training: (In Person) Photographing a Solar Eclipse with Dan Ward
DESCRIPTION:No other visual experience can compare with seeing a black hole in the sky\, surrounded by an inner corona with myriad shades of red with multicolor streamers expanding out from the sun in all directions. Even non-religious people describe a Total Solar Eclipse as a “spiritual” event. Veteran eclipse photographer Dan Ward will share tips\, tricks and suggestions for successfully imaging the next eclipse. April 8\, 2024 will be the last total solar eclipse visible from the United States until Aug. 23\, 2044. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nDan Ward\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nA semi-retired Chief Workforce Economist\, Dan Ward is an avid amateur astronomer and photographer. He is actively involved with astronomy educational outreach for the Northern Virginia Astronomy Club (NOVAC) and the Analemma Society. He regularly teaches classes on Stargazing with Binoculars\, Capturing the Night Sky with Smartphones\, and Eclipse Photography. Having won numerous photography awards\, Dan retired from competition in 2017. His greatest personal accomplishments are having remained married to the same enchanting lady for 50+ years\, being the father to two daughters\, and more recently becoming “Starpoppa Dan” to his star child granddaughter\, Delilah! \n\n\n\nIn Person at the Dunn Loring Firehouse

SUMMARY:Education & Training: (In-Person) Photography and the Law with Jim Norman
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will focus on two topics of importance to photographers — an introduction to copyright and a discussion of limitations that can be placed on where and when you can take a photograph and the uses you can make of that photograph.    \n\n\n\nCopyright is controlled exclusively by Federal law and provides important protections — and limitations — to you as the creator of a photograph. You automatically own the copyright in a photograph you make for your own use (if you’re employed by someone else\, other factors come into play)\, but once you share a photograph\, things become more complicated.  In addition\, your rights and remedies change significantly if you take the time to file a copyright registration.  In some instances\, it may be worthwhile to take legal action against a party that has made unauthorized use of one if your images.  In addition to the more complicated remedies available in the past\, we now have a less complex\, and less expensive\, option — the Copyright Claims Board. We will also touch upon the “fair use” exceptions and the complications that can arise if you employ artificial intelligence to make or enhance an image.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLimitations of when and where you can take a photograph\, and how you can use it\, will vary considerably depending on circumstances. We’ll go over the factors you need to take into account and what your options are if someone tells you “you aren’t allowed” to make photos of a particular scene.  It can be complicated\, and often the best option is to use common sense and common courtesy\, regardless of what you have the “right” to do. \n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nJim Norman is a long-time member of NVPS and other organizations with an interest in photography\, including being a Creator Member of the Copyright Alliance.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIn Person at the Dunn Loring Firehouse

SUMMARY:Education & Training - (In-Person) Matting with Bob and Willa Friedman
DESCRIPTION:At this month’s Education and Training session\, Bob and Willa will present a how-to/hands-on matting seminar to help members prepare their images for print competition\, exhibits or for personal use.   \n\n\n\nAfter our brief demonstration\, there will be several workstations around the room where several experienced members will demonstrate how they cut mat using their equipment.   This is a hands-on session\, so bring a photo\, not larger than 8.5 x11 to mat.  We will have mat board and other materials required to practice on. \n\n\n\nIf you have a mat cutter\, bring it to follow along. \n\n\n\nAlso\, if you have a jump/flash drive bring it so we can share our spreadsheet for cutting dimensions. \n\n\n\nBob Friedman\n\n\n\nWilla Friedman\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBIOs: \n\n\n\nBob started his photography journey as a teenager with a darkroom in his parents’ basement which he inherited from his brother. The first thing he did when he and Willa bought their house was to build a darkroom in the basement. \n\n\n\nWilla first became involved in photography as an instructor at the American Museum of Natural History in New York where she photographed wildlife in city parks for the NYC schools and where her images were published in a fourth-grade textbook. \n\n\n\nBob and Willa say that If selling a few photos makes them pros\, then they are pros. Otherwise they consider themselves advanced amateurs. They have taken courses and workshops at Photoworks at Glen Echo and with Freeman Patterson and Andre Gallant in New Brunswick\, Canada. They have also had extensive courses in Photoshop. They have been members of NVPS for 17 years. \n\n\n\nWhile their subjects are varied\, Bob enjoys street photography and Willa looks for reflections everywhere. Both use a Fuji X-T5 with various lenses. \n\n\n\nTheir work is currently on display at the Art League in the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria\, and they have had images published in the Northern Virginia Review and District Lines. They have had multiple images in the Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections at the Smithsonian Institution and have prints on display in various professional offices in the Metro DC area. \n\n\n\nTheir current job is retirement—while it doesn’t pay very well\, it’s a lot more fun than working. \n\n\n\nIn Person at the Dunn Loring Firehouse

SUMMARY:Education & Training - (In Person) Prints! Without Losing Your Mind! with Jim McDermott
DESCRIPTION:Printing has long been considered an important part of the photographer’s craft. While the pandemic discouraged many photographers from printing their work\, the print remains a key medium for presenting and preserving our work. This presentation will survey some of the important things to consider when you are printing your work. It will include a listing some of the local and national printing services identified by fellow club members. \n\n\n\nJim McDermott\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nJim McDermott is this year’s Education and Training coordinator for NVPS. Trained as an economist\, he finds the trade-offs among shutter speed\, aperture\, and ISO intuitively sensible. He particularly enjoys wildlife photography\, although he enjoys just about any opportunity to practice his craft. \n\n\n\nHe credits NVPS and many friends in the club with challenging him to become a better photographer. At NVPS\, he’s helped coordinate field trips and served as Program VP. He also worked to arrange speakers for Nature Visions\, prior to it becoming Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person at the Dunn Loring Firehouse

SUMMARY:Education & Training – Anonymous Critique with Stan Bysshe and Judy Guenther
DESCRIPTION:Like most NVPS members\, Stan and Judy have entered countless photo competitions and have had numerous favorite images shot down by judges. It is important to pay attention to detail when taking a photo and processing it. But it is also important to remember the reason why you took the photo\, what was it that caught your eye\, did you convey that vision to the viewer.  \nThe NVPS Anonymous Critique is a great opportunity to get feedback on your images. The process is anonymous\, so you have nothing to lose. Examples of the kinds of images you might want to submit for critique include: \n\nImages you think are keepers but may need a little help\nExperiments with new processing techniques\nImages you are considering for competition\n\nThe sole purpose of the anonymous critique is to help you grow as a photographer. You will not be identified unless you identify yourself by making comments or asking questions about your images during the Zoom session. You also can use Zoom chat to send a direct message only to Education & Training Coordinator Art Rose and he will ask the question or make the comment for you. \nThe firm deadline for image submission is 6 p.m. on Tuesday\, December 27\, 2022 to allow time for David Crooks to anonymize the images and for Stan and Judy to review them before the January 10 meeting.  \nSubmitting Images \nYou can submit up to three images.  \nResize Your Image(s)Size images the same way as for our monthly competitions\, that is\, not to exceed 1400 pixels horizontally or 1050 pixels vertically. Image resolution should be set to 127 pixels per inch (PPI). Image format is jpg. Color space is sRGB. \nRename your image filename(s)File naming is important. Include the image title preceded with 1-\, 2-\, or 3-. Examples: 1-Fishing Boat.jpg\, 2-Old Dock.jpg\, 3-Hawaiian Sunset.jpg. Files starting with 1- will be highest priority\, 2- medium priority and 3- low priority. Depending on the number of images submitted\, we may not get thru them all so number your most important image with a 1-. Spaces are OK\, but do not use any special characters in the filename. \nNote: Since those critiquing will see the filenames\, do not include your name there\, just the number prefix and image title. \nDrag-and-Drop your images into SmugMug***Look for the drag-and-drop instructions in a December 13th and 20th eBlast to all of the current NVPS members.*** \nQuestions?  Contact the Education & Training Coordinator Art Rose\, email information can be found at Board Contacts. \nBiographies: \nStan Bysshe \nStan’s photographic journey started in the 1960s with a hand me down Nikkormat. But because of his love for scuba diving and marine tropical reef ecology\, his equipment and images became dedicated to underwater nature. By 2010 it was time to hang up the scuba gear and when he joined NVPS\, Stan was exposed to a whole new world of land-based photography. Still nature remained a driving force behind his images. \nSince joining the club\, Stan has “volunteered” for Field Trips (twice)\, Competitions\, Mentoring and is a past President. This will be his third Anonymous Critique. \nFor the past several years he has helped lead photo tours in Washington State\, Alaska\, Yellowstone National Park\, New Mexico and Florida. \n  \n\nJudy Guenther \nJUDY GUENTHER\, photographer\, enjoys capturing scenes from her world travels in a variety of styles from storytelling to discovering small details in ordinary scenes. Capturing the beauty and art in nature and the people of the world is a special joy for her. Judy also enjoys photographing details in architecture and looking for abstracts. She has won several awards\, most recently the grand prize in the Washington Post’s 2022 Travel Photography Contest. She is a member of the Northern Virginia Photographic Society\, The Art League Gallery of Alexandria\, Va.\, and the F11 Women’s Photography Collective.  Her web site is www.judyguentherphotography.com \n

SUMMARY:Education & Training – My Approach to Landscape Photography with Judy Graham
DESCRIPTION:Judy Graham has been fortunate to do some amazing things in her life\, but the time she spends doing landscape photography\, remains at the top of her list. Judy’s E&T presentation is about her approach to the art\, covering topics such as her gear and accessories\, camera settings\, time of day for best results\, various composition techniques\, and challenges in the field. This presentation is sure to provide useful information for novice and intermediate photographers\, and advanced photographers will similarly find useful information about how she sees compositions. \nBIO:  \nJudy has lived in the Washington\, D.C. area most of her life. She retired March 1\, 2018\, after a long career in the field of human resources management for corporate America. Judy joined NVPS in January 2011 with the goal of meeting local photographers\, doing more local photography\, and learning more about the art of photography. Judy has served in various Board positions for NVPS\, including President for the 2021-2022 club year. \nJudy is primarily drawn to photographing dramatic landscapes\, often remote and difficult to get to. Initially her interest was in the desert southwest; however\, in more recent years she has expanded her travel to include such places as Alaska\, Iceland\, Greenland\, Bolivia\, Patagonia\, and the Canadian Rockies and Yellowstone\, in winter. She does not let the cold or bad weather get in her way. \nMost recently Judy joined the Capital Photography Center as an instructor. She will be sharing her passion for landscape photography and teaching novice to intermediate photographers the principles of composition in the field.

SUMMARY:Education & Training – How to Make (Realistic) Composites with Gary Perlow
DESCRIPTION:The online world is replete with photographic composites: many funny\, most poorly done.  Gary is going to walk you through the process that will help you create believable composites.  When a composite is believable the emotional impact is magnified.  He will address and demonstrate such topics as perspective\, color\, saturation\, shadows and other elements. \nBio: \nGary\, an ex-New Yorker\, has been living in the northern Virginia area for nearly 30 years.  He was a home builder who especially enjoyed designing kitchens\, bathrooms\, and choosing paint colors.  He is presently involved in commercial real estate investment. \nHe started taking photographs of his daughter’s sporting events about 10 years ago\, and discovered that post-processing the images provided a welcome creative outlet.  Then and today\, he has never stopped being an ardent student of Photoshop.  Its potential never ceases to amaze.  \nHe received the Best in Show award at Nature Visions in 2019\, Best in Show (Photo Art Division) at Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions in 2022\,  and the Ollie Fife Award in 2022 from the NVPS.  His photographs of Civil War battlefields have appeared in Hallowed Ground\, a publication of the American Battlefield Trust. \n.His other hobby is powerlifting where he has competed nationally – but due to aches and pains\, no longer competes.

SUMMARY:Education & Training – Skylum Luminar AI and Neo Photo Editing by David Crooks
DESCRIPTION:Description of Presentation: \nSkylum has released two AI photo editing tools (AI and Neo) which David Crooks will demonstrate using your photos in a live photo editing session.  Instructions for submitting photos to David will be available in the “Notices” section of all NVPS eBlasts sent from March 15 through March 25\, under the heading “Call for Photos.”  The deadline for submissions is Saturday\, March 26.  You may coordinate with David as necessary via the “Webmaster” email address found in Board Contacts. \nBio: \nPhotography is David Crooks’ passion and capturing the beauty of nature is the reward. David pursues his love of photography from his early days of chasing cardinals in his neighborhood to visiting many local and far away\, parks\, reserves\, and other places where “wildlife” lives. \nIn 2014\, David\, his wife Cynthia\, and their dog Sam moved to Annandale\, Virginia\, from Leesburg\, Virginia to be closer to work. He was a member of the Loudoun Photo Club for about 5 years and then in 2015\, joined Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS). In 2016\, he volunteered to be the Webmaster of the NVPS website. \nDavid is also the organizer of the Virginia Beltway Photography Meetup Group which has over 2\,000 members and leads about two field trips a month. The Group also does a Photo A Day for the year and a month project. The goal is to take photos every day and post the best one to the Meetup site. This is a proven way to improve your photography. David is an affiliate of Skylum and has done a few of these live edit sessions for the Meetup Group. He has a discount code and affiliate links. He receives a small commission on the sale but this does not increase the price.

SUMMARY:Education & Training – “How to Get Your Work Out There” by Georgette Grossman
DESCRIPTION:Georgette’s journey in photography began 15 years ago when her granddaughter\, Ava\, was born. Not capturing the cute smiles that she wanted\, Georgette switched from a point’n shoot to a DSLR (Nikon D80) and took classes at Fairfax County Adult Ed with John Gonsalves. Eventually the relationship of aperture\, shutter speed\, and exposure fell into place. John instructed her class to tell a story; fill the frame! She hears his voice whenever she has a camera (or cell phone) in hand!! \nGeorgette captures moments that she wants to remember. Her subjects include abstracts\, people\, places\, and nature\, but her favorite subject is flowers–close-ups and macros. Currently\, she is photographing with a mirrorless Fuji X-T3. \nGeorgette personally believes that part of photography is sharing your work with others: \n\nat camera club meetings\nat competitions\nat exhibits\nin publications\non social media\non your own website\n\nIn this meeting\, she will explore How to Get Your Work Out There.

SUMMARY:Education & Training – What to “See” in Architecture by Judy Guenther
DESCRIPTION:Judy will discuss her passion for architectural photography including challenges\, edit tips\, what works and doesn’t\, and how to really “work” an architectural subject beyond the snapshot by delving into lines\, patterns\, graphics\, and reflections. \nJudy admits to being primarily a travel photographer. She loves shooting a variety of subjects while traveling\, depending on where in the world she happens to be. From landscapes in the Palouse and National Parks\, to water and ice in Greenland and Antarctica\, to wildlife in South Georgia Island and Montana\, to local portraits and street photography\, and finally to amazing architecture. She didn’t start shooting anything other than snapshots until 10 years ago when her husband\, Wayne\, decided she was ready for a “big girl’s camera.” She has moved from all Nikon equipment to Olympus mirrorless equipment. She also loves using the cameras on her iPhone 12 Pro Max. She has been a member of NVPS since 2015\, is a member of the F11 Women’s Photography Collective\, the Art League in the Torpedo Factory in Old Town Alexandria\, and the Maryland Federation of Arts in Annapolis\, MD. She has received several awards including at the Nature Visions Expos (now Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions) People’s Choice Award in Photo Art and Best in Flower Photography in the Nature Category.

SUMMARY:Education & Training – “Street Photography” by Bob & Willa Friedman
DESCRIPTION:Description of Presentation: \nThis is a redo of our presentation in 2018.  Even tho we were in the middle of the pandemic there were still lots of possibilities. \nWikipedia says “Street photography is photography conducted for art or inquiry that features unmediated chance encounters and random incidents within public places”. We have been doing that for a number of years.  The key word in the definition is: “public”; it need not be on the street. \nOur presentation will explain what you can do legally in public spaces\, as told by lawyers and court decisions. You do have the right to photograph in public places. \nThe “decisive moment” will be explored as shown by Henri Cartier-Bresson and other photographers\, famous\, not so famous\, and us! It’s not always what it seems. \nAlso\, getting over the reluctance to take street photos or fear of getting punched in the face will be discussed including safe and friendly places for street photography. There are interesting places where you can practice street photography\, sometimes even with the cooperation of your subjects. \n Bob & Willa Friedman Biographies: \n As a teenager\, Bob started his photography journey with a darkroom in his parent’s basement\, which he inherited from his brother. The first thing he did when we bought our house was to build a darkroom in the basement. \nWilla first became involved in photography as an instructor at the American Museum of Natural History in New York\, where she photographed wildlife in city parks for the NYC schools\, and her images were published in a fourth grade textbook.  \nIf selling a few photos makes us pros\, then we are pros. Otherwise we are advanced amateurs. We have taken courses and workshops at Photoworks at Glen Echo\, and with Freeman Patterson and Andre Gallant in New Brunswick\, Canada. We have also had extensive courses in Photoshop. We have been members of NVPS for 12 years. \nOur subjects are varied\, but Bob does street photography and Willa finds reflections everywhere. Both use Fuji cameras with various lenses. \nOur current job is retirement — doesn’t pay very well but it is a lot more fun than the “W” word. We have multiple images in the Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections at the Smithsonian Institution\, Washington\, D.C. and have prints on display in various professional offices in the Metro DC area and in many private collections.

SUMMARY:Education & Training – Anonymous Critique by Bill Millhouser and Stan Bysshe
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nThe NVPS Anonymous Critique is a great opportunity to get feedback on your images. The process is anonymous so you have nothing to lose. Examples of the kinds of images you might want to submit for critique include: \n\nImages you think are keepers but may need a little help\nExperiments with new processing techniques\nImages you are considering for competition (note: there are no guarantees you will win but the critique may help)\n\nThe sole purpose of the anonymous critique is to help you grow as a photographer. You will not be identified unless you identify yourself by making comments or asking questions about your images during the Zoom session. You also can use Zoom chat to send a direct message only to Education & Training Coordinator Lynn Cates and she will ask the question or make the comment for you. \nThe firm deadline for image submission is 6 p.m. on Friday\, October 29\, 2021 to allow time for David Crooks to anonymize the images and for Bill and Stan to review them before the November 9 meeting.  \nSubmitting Images \n\nYou can submit up to three images.\nPlease prioritize them for review by naming them as follows:number_title\, where number is 1\, 2\, or 3\, followed by an underscore and anything you’d like for a title. For example\, “1_Red House on the Prairie.”(Putting the number first will allow us to sort the images so that at least one image from every photographer is critiqued.  Beyond that\, Bill and Stan will critique as many images as time allows.)\nDo not put your name or the word “title” in the title of your images.\nSize your images the same as for competition:\n\njpeg images\nsRGB workspace\nMaximum of 1400 pixels wide and 1050 pixels high (vertical shots have the same 1050 pixel height requirement)\n127 pixels per inch (PPI\, sometimes called dots per inch or DPI) or less (e.g.\, 127\, 96 or 72 PPI)\n\n\nInclude “Anonymous Critique” in the subject line of your email\, and the name of each image in the text of the message.\nIf you send your images from Mac email\, be sure to select the “actual size” option from the “image size” menu in the upper right corner.\nSubmit your images to David Crooks at his email address provided in the October 15th and October 21st NVPS eBlasts.  Also\, please note that David’s email address is in the “Notices” section of all NVPS eBlasts beginning October 21st.\n\nQuestions?  Please contact the Education & Training Coordinator Lynn Cates (contact information can be found at Board Contacts.) \nBiographies: \nBill Millhouser  \nBill became interested in photography in the early 1970s\, starting with a used Yashica SLR moving on to a series of Canon film SLRs. In 2001\, Bill dove in the digital age and bought the Canon D30\, which had a rather modest 3.25 megapixel sensor and a blazing 3 FPS frame rate. \nSoon after retiring in 2010\, Bill attended his first photographic workshop in Costa Rica\, which exposed him to the wonderful variety and color of tropical birds and the proper use of big telephoto lenses (both on a tripod and handheld)\, the use of fill flash\, and the complexities of multi-flash setups to capture the beauty of the region’s many hummingbirds. His keen interest in wildlife and bird photography has since led him to visit many locations throughout the Mid-Atlantic region\, the West Coast\, New Mexico\, Florida\, Belize\, Central and South America\, as well as several trips to Africa\, \nSince joining NVPS\, Bill has served as the Field Trip Coordinator\, Co-VP of competition\, and President of the Club. \n  \n\nStan Bysshe \nStan’s photographic journey started in the 1960s with a hand me down Nikkormat. But because of his love for scuba diving and marine tropical reef ecology\, his equipment and images became dedicated to underwater nature. By 2010 it was time to hang up the fins and when he joined NVPS\, Stan was exposed to a whole new world of land based photography. Still nature remained a driving force behind his images. \nSince joining the club\, Stan has volunteered for Field Trips (twice)\, Competitions\, Mentoring and is a past President. For the past several years he has helped lead photo tours in Washington State\, Alaska and Yellowstone National Park. \nThis is his second Anonymous Critique\, and like most NVPS members he too is still searching for that magic image recipe that captures a viewer’s eye.

SUMMARY:Education & Training – Floral Photography with Passion and "Joie de Vivre" by Padma Inguva
DESCRIPTION:Description of Presentation: \nPadma will share information about some of her techniques in creating stunning flower portraits. These techniques include photographing flowers on Lightbox\, multiple exposures both in Camera and via Photoshop\, applying textures to floral images\, selective focus\, blurred backgrounds\, compositional elements\, backlighting\, and bokeh! This program also includes tips on processing colors which are considered difficult to photograph\, like red and purple. \nArtist Statement: \nMy goal as a photographer is to get people to slow down\, unite with the natural world and absorb the beauty of flowers\, create an oasis in this rapid\, constantly demanding stressful daily life. There is no better way to escape this running-around than spending time looking through a lens. I want to set people on a path of inspiration\, hope\, joy\, and love that comes from an appreciation of these tiny treasures all around us. It gives me immense joy in taking you down a beautiful journey into flowers through my lens where you admire and observe flowers with a whole new perspective and create art that lasts far longer than the flower itself. \n

SUMMARY:Education & Training - “That is So Old” by Ginger Werz-Petricka
DESCRIPTION:Description of Presentation: \nThe club competition in January will have the theme of “Old”.  For September\, long time club member\, Ginger Werz-Petricka will address some of the possibilities for meeting the criteria of the theme.  \nOld (Competition Date: January 18\, 2022): People\, places\, or objects that are showing their age. Helpful definitions: \n\nHaving lived for a long time; no longer young. The hands\, eyes\, faces of older people are classic examples.\nMade or built long ago. Dilapidated barns\, antique cars or trucks are good examples. \n\nNo dead\, or dying\, flowers or plants; in their relative life span they are old\, but it defeats the purpose of this theme. \nFor this presentation Ginger will be discussing the possible pitfalls of photographing for a concept as opposed to a subject.  She will be showing images of her own as well as those of several other club members while discussing what makes an image depict ‘old’\, how does an image read and what has impact. \nBiography: \nGinger has been a member of NVPS since 2009.  Over the years she has been involved with Education and Training\, and Members Gallery\, but is mostly known as co-chair of the Portfolio Project.  Her photography often reflects her interest in shape and texture\, with a love of dramatic light.  She also has a special interest in photographing the abandoned\, old buildings in particular.

SUMMARY:Education & Training – Portfolio Project: 2nd Preliminary Review
DESCRIPTION:Second Preliminary Review\, Portfolio Project – features the preliminary review of the second half of this year’s Portfolio Project (PP) submissions.  We have an amazing variety of subject matter and approaches\, some of which have been inspired by the pandemic restrictions surrounding us. Ginger Werz-Petricka\, Willa Siegel\, and Brenda Wilson\, co-chairs of the Portfolio Project will offer their feedback on key aspects of each portfolio presented: the artist statement\, how it reflects the portfolio content\, and the cohesiveness of portfolio images. The preliminary review gives a good opportunity to focus upon the artist statement\, and whether it clearly and concisely tells the viewer what the subject is\, why the artist selected this subject\, and how the goal of the project was accomplished.

SUMMARY:Education & Training – Abstract Photography with Mike Whalen
DESCRIPTION: \nProgram\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCurves by Mike Whalen\nMost photography is based on capturing real\, easily recognizable subjects such as a people\, places\, or things. Abstract photography is different. Instead\, the objective is to look for simpler visual elements such as: shapes and colors; lines and curves; textures\, tones\, and patterns. These simple elements become the dominant points of interest in abstract photos. \n \n\n\n The sources could be either naturally occurring or man-made\, and of any size. Frequently\, small areas of larger physical objects can make interesting abstracts. The images could be found as-is\, staged or generated in-camera. They could also be further altered within a computer via post-processing to produce even more dramatic results. \n \n\n\n The scope of  abstract photography is quite broad and definitions may vary depending on who you talk to or what you read. To add even more confusion\, images could be totally abstract – having no connection to physical reality\, or partially abstract – by mixing both physical and abstract elements together in the same photo.   \n \n\n\n This presentation will show a broad variety of both abstract and semi-abstract images\, and in many cases\, how they were created will be described. All images are photographs or derived from photographs.\n \n\n\n Bio\n\n\n As a teen\, Mike learned a few basic photo tips from his father\, an artist and photographer. He dabbled with film cameras in the 80’s and 90’s\, and after that\, played with several digital point-and-shoots.  However\, his interest became more passionate after purchasing a basic DSLR in 2006.\n \n\n\n Mike joined NVPS in 2009 after learning about the club from fellow member\, Willa Friedman. He held board positions from 2010 to the present\, including President in 2013. He received several distinguished service awards and multiple competition awards thru the years including image of the year.\n \n\n\n Before COVID\, Mike volunteered weekly as a pet photographer for the Fairfax County Animal Shelter and\, and as an event photographer for charitable organization’s such as: The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition and The Epilepsy Foundation of America.\n \n\n\n Mike says that joining NVPS was a significant step in furthering his passion for photography. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nExamples of Abstract Images \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReferences \n\n\n\nBelow is a small sampling of online articles and galleries showing abstract photography. SUMMARY:Education & Training - Bird Photography with Bill Corbett
DESCRIPTION:Bird photography is for everyone interested in the wildlife\, beauty\, and light that can be found just outside your kitchen window or far beyond.  Bill’s presentation will detail photography of birds at rest and in flight\, for all levels of interest and expertise\, from beginner to advanced. \nBill’s illustrated presentation will cover five topics\, with each discussed in terms of the basics and how to move up a learning curve. \n\nEquipment:  From using a point and shoot superzoom to handling big glass on a gimbal head.\nExposure:  Three words — Shoot in manual.  Three more words — Expose for highlights.\nAutofocus:  Luck favors the prepared.  “Spray and pray” favors those who know and use various features offered by their camera’s autofocus.\nCraft:  “Sun and wind behind” is one of a number of well-known strategies for bird photographers to arrive at better opportunities\, and to come away with better images.\nSetups:  Feeders + flashes = fun.\n\nHope you can make it! \nBill Corbett is a bird and travel photographer who enjoys color\, action and texture in his pictures.  A photojournalist in college\, Bill resumed spending serious amounts of time on photography when digital cameras came along.  He is a Nikon shooter who prefers a long lens and who uses a flash anytime he can. Bill enjoys competing his images at NVPS and making albums from pictures he and his wife Judy take on their travels. \nBill and Judy moved three summers ago to southern Loudoun from McLean\, where they raised their three kids.  He is still just beginning to explore the photo opportunities in Loudoun and west of there.   They spend most of the summer in Delaware\, where Bill takes his camera to wildlife refuges regularly.  His main photography goal is to keep on doing what he’s been doing.  It is fun. \nBill is the secretary and a former president of Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions (formerly Nature Visions)\, a member of NVPS for the past ten or so years\, and the winner of a small number of photography ribbons and awards from those two organizations. \nBill is a retired foreign service officer and trade negotiator who served in Washington\, Korea and Japan and enjoyed/suffered through more than a few travels to other points as a minor representative of American diplomacy.  Follow him on Facebook for his views on current events; he doesn’t post his pictures there. \n

SUMMARY:Education & Training - Anonymous Critique: Kathryn Mohrman and Stan Bysshe
DESCRIPTION:Kathryn Mohrman \nOur November E&T Tuesday will be an Anonymous Critique conducted by Kathryn Mohrman and Stan Bysshe. Take this opportunity to get feedback on your images. Submit images you are using new software to process; images you like but feel need just a little help\, or images you may consider for a competition. The sole purpose of anonymous critique is to help you grow as a photographer. You will not be identified unless you choose to make comments or ask questions about your images. \nThe firm deadline for image submission is 6 p.m. on Monday\, November 2\, 2020\, to allow time for our computer team to anonymize the images and for Kathryn and Stan to review them before the November 10 meeting. \nYou can submit up to three images. Please prioritize them by naming them as follows: number title\, where number is 1\, 2\, or 3\, followed by an underscore and anything you’d like for a title. For example\, “1_Red House on the Prairie.” Putting the number first will allow us to sort the images so that at least one image from every photographer is critiqued. Beyond that\, Kathryn and Stan will critique as many images as time allows. \nPlease submit your images to critique-2020@nvps.org\,  sized the same as for competition: jpeg images with a maximum of 1400 pixels wide and 1050 pixels high (vertical shots have the same 1050 pixel height requirement)\, sRGB workspace. We recommend your jpeg images be 127 pixels per inch (PPI\, sometimes called dots per inch or DPI) or less (e.g.\, 127\, 96 or 72 PPI)  for best results on Zoom. If you send the images from Mac mail\, please select the “actual size” option from the “image size” menu in the upper right corner. \nQuestions? Please contact the Education and Training Coordinator\, Eva Lanyi. Her contact information can be found at Board Contacts.

SUMMARY:Education & Training - A Workflow from Raw to Print with Gary Perlow
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will be an in-depth description of a linear logical approach to photograph editing that will take you from a raw file straight out of camera through Photoshop to printing.  It will be geared to novice and experienced users of Photoshop.  Topics discussed will shed light on what should be done\, when it should be done\, and why it should be done. \nThe programs used will be Bridge\, Adobe Camera Raw\, and Photoshop.  The why and wherefore of raw processing will be discussed in depth.  Then we will take a picture into Photoshop and demonstrate the steps to edit non-destructively and get the absolute most out of your picture to produce a “clean” image\, before diving into artistic effects\, cropping and sharpening. \nBio: \nGary first picked up a camera about 7 years ago to photograph his daughter’s academic athletic events.  He realized the powerful effect that careful post-processing could have on an image\, finding that the marriage of the two\, photography and Photoshop\, brought a welcome and readily accessible outlet for creativity.  In fact\, he enjoys post-processing at least as much as he does taking photographs. \nGary shoots a wide variety of images that hopefully have the potential to arouse an emotional response: portraits\, nature\, landscapes\, architecture\, and things.  In coming years\, he hopes to get more into creative\, imaginative edits and mood-type photography that transcend reality\, if ever so slightly.  In the 2019 Nature Visions Expo\, he won best landscape\, best wildlife\, and best in show.  This past year at the club\, he won the advanced digital photographer of the year\, the advanced color prints photographer of the year\, and the advanced versatile photographer of the year. \nGary enjoys talking Photoshop\, and would invite anyone at NVPS at any level to discuss anything about post-processing with him.

SUMMARY:Education & Training - The Joys of Water Photography with Lynn Cates
DESCRIPTION:Lynn will share her love of the creative aspects of water photography. Moving water is fascinating whether it is in majestic waterfalls or tiny streams. It has many moods – from lively and energetic to peaceful and calm. Lynn will discuss how to capture some of these moods with techniques she uses in the field such as varying shutter speeds and filters. She also will discuss techniques she uses in post-processing to accentuate lines\, shapes\, and textures to help bring out the feelings she wants to evoke. Lynn also will talk about photographing reflections and water droplets. \nLynn became serious about photography in June 2015. That month she began shooting RAW at a workshop in Acadia National Park\, and she took Corey Hilz’ class “Lightroom in a Day”  and started processing her images. She is passionate about combining her photography with her cross-country road trips. She loves her Nikon D850. You can view her work at rdtrpr.com. \n \n \n \n \n \n Loading...\n \n \n \n \n \n Taking too long?\n \n \n \n Reload document \n |\n \n Open in new tab \n \n \n \n Download

SUMMARY:Education & Training - Understanding Photoshop Layers with Jim Sinsheimer
DESCRIPTION:As we all know\, Photoshop is an awesome editing tool for photographers. It has many choices with regard to tools that provide virtually unlimited editing possibilities. One of the most versatile capabilities is use of layers in the workflow process. In Jim’s presentation\, he will review what a layer is\, the different types of layers\, what basic editing can be done with them\, and discuss masking\, which unlocks the full potential of Photoshop layers. The presentation will be live (Jim will do actual editing). However\, don’t feel you’ll need to take copious notes for he has prepared a PowerPoint file of the editing to be posted on the NVPS website. \nJim’s introduction to photography was at around 7 years old when his Dad converted a coal bin into his darkroom. His interest really took off in college. Jim has been a member of NVPS for two years\, having moved to Virginia from Southern California to be with his grandson and his family. Jim’s work has been published in Black and White Magazine\, LensWork\, and will be soon featured again in LensWork’s “Our Magnificent Planet.” He’s had showings at the California Department of Transportation Headquarters\, the 1650 Gallery in Los Angeles and currently in a large digital wall at the 71 South Wacker building in Chicago. For several years\, his images have won awards at the Orange County (CA) fair. \nJim has been a Canon shooter forever – he still has his FTB\, TL and F1 cameras as “museum” pieces. Travel photography to Finland for the Northern Lights was planned\, but is now on hold due to the pandemic.
