SUMMARY:Competition: "No Theme" with Judge Jim Steele
DESCRIPTION:January’s Competition Judge is Jim Steele. There is no theme.  \nJames Steele is a photographer in the tradition of Ansel Adams and Edward Weston. Working primarily in medium and large format\, his “scapes” of land\, sea\, and body represent the finest in traditional and digital photographic imagery. \nJim has studied with Cole Weston\, George Tice\, Joyce Tenneson\, Christopher James\, Carson Graves\, and Martha Casanave. \nIn our DC area his work can be seen in Studio #343 in the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria. \nJim has taught workshops and photography courses at the Art League School in Alexandria\, the Smithsonian\, Visarts\, Photoworks\, Inc\, at Glen Echo Park and has guest lectured at Georgetown University. He has also taught numerous workshops in digital printing. \n“First and foremost\, I photograph what interests me\, until it no longer interests me; then I photograph something else. Most of my work is landscapes and figure studies executed with both traditional and digital materials.” \n“In the end\, it’s not about the process\, it’s about the image. It either works or it doesn’t.” \n \nJAMES D. STEELE – BIO \nEDUCATION: \nB.S./M.S. Industrial Engineering\, University of Missouri. Master photography classes with George Tice\, Carson Graves\, Christopher James\, Cole Weston\, Joyce Tenneson\, and Martha Casanave. \nBIOGRAPHY: \nJim Steele is a photographer working in both monochrome and color landscapes and nudes. Steele is equally comfortable in both traditional and digital processes. \nSteele photographs the landscape throughout the Southwest\, Northeast\, Pacific Northwest\, and Europe. \nSteele has a studio in the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria\, Virginia. \nHe frequently lectures on the subject of fine printing and has taught at Photoworks\, the Smithsonian Institution\, the Art League in Alexandria\, Va\, and has guest lectured in photography at Georgetown University. \nTEACHING STATEMENT \nCraft is not a substitute for a lack of vision…..

SUMMARY:Competition: Theme "Geometry" with Judge Greg Holden
DESCRIPTION:Theme Subject: Geometry \nGeometry: Images where the predominant elements are geometric shapes—circles\, squares\, rectangles\, triangles\, etc. The compositional elements may be specific [subject-based]\, such as a wall with a door & doorknob & windows\, or implied [design-based]\, where the photographer searches for designs\, such as rectangles\, circles\, etc. without concern for the names of the objects. For example\, subject-based could consider a scene with land\, ocean and sky\, whereas\, design-based could see the same scene as three rectangles of different tones and sizes. \n\nGreg Holden is a photographer from Rockville\, MD who uses his photography to share with others his visions of the world. \nHe is an avid hiker and\, while most of his photos are from visits to National Parks\, some of his best photos are from outings closer to home. \nWhile Greg has enjoyed photographing many beautiful sunrises and grand landscapes\, he finds that the little scenes often overlooked by others are the ones that fuel his creativity. Greg is always looking beyond the obvious and photographing the things that others might not even notice…like an acorn sprouting\, the patterns made by rust and faded paint on an old automobile\, or patterns in the windblown sand of a local beach. \nGreg enjoys teaching others and sharing his passion for photography.  He speaks and judges at clubs throughout the MD/VA area.  He also teaches classes through Capital Photography Center (capitalphotographycenter.com). \nYou can see Greg’s work on his website www.imagesunderfoot.com and follow him on Instagram @imagesunderfoot \n
