SUMMARY:Competition: “Night Photography” with Judge Roy Sewall
DESCRIPTION:Night Photography is the theme for the Competition\nThe night presents an interesting set of photographic opportunities. Places active with human activity\, such as city streets\, country fairs\, fireworks\, and etc.\, come alive at night.  But even quiet and lonely places – cemeteries\, back alleys\, and moon-lit shorelines – can surprise you with what they have to offer. The absence of daylight at night will force us to ensure that we capture sufficient light by increasing the length of our exposures\, by adding light (flash or light painting)\, or by increasing the sensitivity (ISO) of our sensors. However\, be careful to maintain the feeling of darkness in the image\, i.e.\, don’t let a too-long exposure turn your scene into the daytime. Wherever you may be headed\, grab your tripod\, a wireless or cabled shutter release\, and a friend (for assistance\, company\, and safety)\, and have fun shooting in the dark.  \nThe definition of night photography is after sunset\, until before sunrise. This would include dusk\, and/or twilight\, which is after sunset. The after sunset/before sunrise is already in the definition. \nRoy Sewall Bio\nRoy’s interest in photography evolved from travel in six continents\, yet he found his own community to be one of the most photogenic locations in the world. \nFrom Roy’s interest in photography evolved from travel in six continents\, yet he found his own community to be one of the most photogenic locations in the world. \nFrom 2001 to 2009 Roy concentrated on capturing scenes of the Potomac River and the adjacent Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal. He then developed diverse bodies of work that include foreign and domestic destinations\, architecture and design\, people\, nature\, old places and things\, and abstracts. But since 2012 his foremost passion is his ongoing project called “Mysterra” – illusions that convey fantasy\, whimsy\, and spirits. \nRoy has done extensive work for private and commercial clients\, as well as Potomac River and C&O Canal-related government and non-profit organizations. \nRoy’s considers the ultimate destination for a photograph to be a large fine art print\, 12″ x 18″ or larger. He has exhibited in numerous DC-area group and one-person shows\, as well as in his own studio.

SUMMARY:Competition: Theme "Geometry" with Judge Greg Holden
DESCRIPTION:Theme Subject: Geometry \nGeometry: Images where the predominant elements are geometric shapes—circles\, squares\, rectangles\, triangles\, etc. The compositional elements may be specific [subject-based]\, such as a wall with a door & doorknob & windows\, or implied [design-based]\, where the photographer searches for designs\, such as rectangles\, circles\, etc. without concern for the names of the objects. For example\, subject-based could consider a scene with land\, ocean and sky\, whereas\, design-based could see the same scene as three rectangles of different tones and sizes. \n\nGreg Holden is a photographer from Rockville\, MD who uses his photography to share with others his visions of the world. \nHe is an avid hiker and\, while most of his photos are from visits to National Parks\, some of his best photos are from outings closer to home. \nWhile Greg has enjoyed photographing many beautiful sunrises and grand landscapes\, he finds that the little scenes often overlooked by others are the ones that fuel his creativity. Greg is always looking beyond the obvious and photographing the things that others might not even notice…like an acorn sprouting\, the patterns made by rust and faded paint on an old automobile\, or patterns in the windblown sand of a local beach. \nGreg enjoys teaching others and sharing his passion for photography.  He speaks and judges at clubs throughout the MD/VA area.  He also teaches classes through Capital Photography Center (capitalphotographycenter.com). \nYou can see Greg’s work on his website www.imagesunderfoot.com and follow him on Instagram @imagesunderfoot \n

SUMMARY:Competition: Theme - "The American Experience: Americans at Work" with Judge Denise Silva
DESCRIPTION:Competition Theme: The American Experience: Americans at Work\nFor this month’s themed contest\, show us your best photos of Americans at Work. This may be of a single person\, or multiple people\, at work. The person or persons\, and the work being performed\, must both be clearly evident in the photo. Let’s showcase Americans at Work by demonstrating their emotions\, determination\, strength and pride! \nDenise Silva was the featured photographer in the July/August 2015 Photoshop User Magazine\, “Who’s Who in the KelbyOne Community article.” Additionally\, Denise was recognized as one of the Top 200 Women Photographers Who Inspire by Nature Photo Guides and has had multiple articles published in Extraordinary Vision (EV) Magazine. \nDenise finds every aspect of photography rewarding. From in-camera composition to post-processing\, photography is meditative\, creative\, and challenging. Her passion is to capture images\, from landscapes to urban decay and to share her experiences and knowledge with fellow photographers. \nTo this end\, she and Don Rosenberger started Road Runner Photography Tours. James Norman has recently joined the team! \nThey look forward to sharing their passion for photography with you and know that their tours will not only take you to great places\, but also give you an opportunity to build your network of photography friends while enhancing your photography skills through experience and knowledge sharing in a supportive environment. \nThere is no better place to learn and develop your skills than in the field!
