SUMMARY:Competition with Judge Jean-Pierre Plé – Theme: “Old”
DESCRIPTION:Competition Theme: “Old” within the past three (3) years \nOld : People\, places\, or objects that are showing their age. Helpful definitions: 1. Having lived for a long time; no longer young. The hands\, eyes\, faces of older people are classic examples. 2. Made or built long ago. Dilapidated barns\, antique cars or trucks are good examples. No dead\, or dying flowers or plants; in their relative life span they are old but it defeats the purpose of this theme. \nJean-Pierre Plé is a fine art photographer who embraces the concept that photography gives us a chance to see ourselves\, to see our emotions\, and maybe to see something about ourselves that we have never seen before or we were not able to give voice to.  He is drawn to making images where a strong visual and emotional message is formed by shapes\, lines\, or contrast in color or tones.  \nHis photographs have transitioned from an original interest in nature\, landscapes\, abstracts and architecture\, to a current focus on a contemplative approach to photography\, which often depicts his subjects in a non-representational manner.  Sensing a deep desire for photographers to experience greater meaning in their work\, he developed a workshop exploring a contemplative and mindful approach to photography.  While he employs DSLR\, mirrorless and iPhone cameras\, he is also a recovering large format film artist and misses the slow\, methodical\, and mechanical components of large format.   \nHe is a member of the North Bethesda Camera Club.  His work has been part of numerous exhibitions in the Washington\, DC area\, including Washington Printmakers Gallery\, Waverly Street Gallery\, Photoworks Gallery\, Nature Visions\, Herndon ArtSpace\, the Joe Miller Gallery\, PhotoWalk in Crystal City\, Touchstone Gallery\, Lowe House Building\, and the Dupont Underground.  His professional career is in the field of international ocean affairs and he works for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

SUMMARY:Competition: “No Theme” with Judge Sean O’Rourke
DESCRIPTION:Sean O’Rourke will be our February judge for an open competition. Sean is a professional photographer with a diverse portfolio in Architecture\, Real Estate\, Products\, Weddings\, Events\, and Portraits. Whether he is shooting a unique landscape like the powerful waterfalls in Iceland\, a quiet kiss between a newlywed couple amid a lively crowd\, or the intricate tile patterns in a newly renovated kitchen\, Sean always manages to find creativity and art through his lens. \nAs a small veteran-owned business\, Sean prides himself in the Marine Corps’ three core values: honor\, courage\, and commitment. \nHonor: being honest and having integrity in everything he does. \nCourage: doing what it takes to get the shot and not being afraid to go off the beaten path. \nCommitment: serving his clients the same way he served our country\, with unwavering dedication. \nSean considers himself blessed for doing what he loves for a living. Outside of his professional photography\, Sean enjoys being in the great outdoors and appreciating the wonders of nature as it gives him peace and serenity. The world can be a confusing place sometimes and it’s hard to understand sometimes. Sean thinks of his camera as a translator – deciphering the madness into beauty. \n

SUMMARY:Competition: “Night Photography” with Judge Roy Sewall
DESCRIPTION:Night Photography is the theme for the Competition\nThe night presents an interesting set of photographic opportunities. Places active with human activity\, such as city streets\, country fairs\, fireworks\, and etc.\, come alive at night.  But even quiet and lonely places – cemeteries\, back alleys\, and moon-lit shorelines – can surprise you with what they have to offer. The absence of daylight at night will force us to ensure that we capture sufficient light by increasing the length of our exposures\, by adding light (flash or light painting)\, or by increasing the sensitivity (ISO) of our sensors. However\, be careful to maintain the feeling of darkness in the image\, i.e.\, don’t let a too-long exposure turn your scene into the daytime. Wherever you may be headed\, grab your tripod\, a wireless or cabled shutter release\, and a friend (for assistance\, company\, and safety)\, and have fun shooting in the dark.  \nThe definition of night photography is after sunset\, until before sunrise. This would include dusk\, and/or twilight\, which is after sunset. The after sunset/before sunrise is already in the definition. \nRoy Sewall Bio\nRoy’s interest in photography evolved from travel in six continents\, yet he found his own community to be one of the most photogenic locations in the world. \nFrom Roy’s interest in photography evolved from travel in six continents\, yet he found his own community to be one of the most photogenic locations in the world. \nFrom 2001 to 2009 Roy concentrated on capturing scenes of the Potomac River and the adjacent Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal. He then developed diverse bodies of work that include foreign and domestic destinations\, architecture and design\, people\, nature\, old places and things\, and abstracts. But since 2012 his foremost passion is his ongoing project called “Mysterra” – illusions that convey fantasy\, whimsy\, and spirits. \nRoy has done extensive work for private and commercial clients\, as well as Potomac River and C&O Canal-related government and non-profit organizations. \nRoy’s considers the ultimate destination for a photograph to be a large fine art print\, 12″ x 18″ or larger. He has exhibited in numerous DC-area group and one-person shows\, as well as in his own studio.

DESCRIPTION:Roy Sewall Bio\nRoy’s interest in photography evolved from travel in six continents\, yet he found his own community to be one of the most photogenic locations in the world.
