SUMMARY:Competition(Zoom) with Judge Angie McMonigal – Theme: “Natural Sand”
DESCRIPTION:Natural Sand: \n\n\n\nThe image must include natural sand. Natural sand is a granular material composed of finely divided rock or mineral particles\, such as silicates and volcanic minerals\, as well as coral and biogenic sands – these result in sands that are white\, yellow\, tan\, pink\, green\, black\, and other colors. \n\n\n\nSand can’t help but play with wind and water to make beautiful and interesting designs. Sand is also a basic landscape material that might escape notice.  From the sand dunes on a wind-swept beach to desert sands\, sand castles\, meditation gardens\, local parks\, children’s playgrounds\, and sports fields\, the possibilities are all around us. \n\n\n\nCompositions can be created or found\, real or abstract. You may come across natural sand and human-made creations in both obvious places and places you may not consider until you start to look and pay attention. And feel free to create your own composition with sand as a major element!  \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAngie is a fine art and commercial architecture photographer based in Chicago striving to bring a detailed\, thoughtful perspective to her work\, whether for clients or through the workshops she leads. Having grown up surrounded by nature yet fascinated by the big city she’s called home for more than two decades; she brings the meditative calm of her upbringing to a terrain that’s always transforming. Drawing from her education in the micro sciences (molecular biology\, microbiology\, virology) her focus is more frequently on bold architectural details rather than sweeping cityscapes\, creating images that celebrate those unexpectedly iconic elements hiding in plain sight.  \n\n\n\nYou can find her work published and exhibited both nationally and internationally. She frequently works with art consultants\, designers\, brands\, architectural firms\, and private collectors creating images that draw out the organic interplay between design\, structure\, environment\, and society. You can see her work here – www.angiemcmonigal.com \n\n\n\nWorkshops: \n\n\n\nAngie’s mission is to help creative-minded photographers explore the world of architectural photography. Through blog posts\, eBooks\, newsletters\, photowalks\, and workshops\, she aims to provide hands-on\, practical\, and creative training. You’ll be able to improve your entire creative process from shooting to post-processing. For more information visit her here – www.angiemcmonigal.com/workshops

SUMMARY:Competition (Zoom) with Judge Peggy Feerick - Theme: "Written Language"
DESCRIPTION:Competition Theme: “Written Language” within the last three (3) years \n\n\n\nThe image should include some element of a written language – using letters\, characters\, words\, or some portion thereof. All the world’s written languages are acceptable. Compositions can be created or found\, real or abstract – although the language elements must not be abstracted beyond recognition. The language elements must be photographed and not added in post-processing – no captions or layers of added text. \n\n\n\nWritten language is both impactful and beautiful. We can’t help but read it wherever it appears in public spaces – such as on street and shop signs\, as well as in our own spaces – such as on books\, handwritings\, keyboards\, labels\, etc. The more you look\, the more you will see. It draws the eye and may convey more than one meaning depending upon the setting.   \n\n\n\nWritten language can also be visually appealing in terms of its shapes\, patterns\, curves\, and lines\, independent of any linguistic meaning – the language elements that you include do not need to be “read” as text.  This is your chance to make the written language engaging in new ways! \n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nPeggy Feerick has taught photography for over 40 years and is currently instructing classes for The Smithsonian Associates Studio Arts Program. She retired from George Mason University as Associate Professor and Coordinator of Photography in 2016\, with prior teaching at various institutions including the University of New Mexico\, Georgetown University\, and the University of Pennsylvania. In addition\, she was the photo archivist and curator for the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art photographic collection from 1988 to 1994. \n\n\n\nShe has served as a lecturer\, moderator\, and conference panelist both locally and nationally. In 1998\, she co-authored an article on “Women in Photography” for The Reader’s Companion to U.S. Women’s History. In 1993\, she curated “The Telling Image: Portrait Photographs from the Archives of American Art.” This exhibition was shown at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery\, Washington\, DC\, and later traveled to New York City. \n\n\n\nFeerick ‘s work is mainly photographic in nature but at times includes the mediums of printmaking and sculpture. Her work is exhibited locally and nationally and represented in both private and public collections. Peggy has received several grants and awards\, including a residency at CREAR in Scotland and George Mason’s Mathy Award. She holds a BFA from Rochester Institute of Technology in Photography and MA and MFA in Photography and Art History from the University of New Mexico. \n\n\n\nVirtual via Zoom

SUMMARY:Competition with Judge Rosalie O'Donnell – Theme: “Creative Altered Reality”
DESCRIPTION:Competition Theme: “Creative Altered Reality” within the past three (3) years \nCreative Altered Reality:  \nYour image may be of any subject matter and must obviously display a change in the natural order of things whether by color\, form\, shape or any combination of these three.  All images must be original and may not incorporate elements produced by anyone else.  Artwork or computer graphics generated by you may be incorporated if the original photographic content predominates.  Images may not be constructed entirely within a computer.  Hi-key\, low-key\, or High Dynamic Range (HDR) images without further changes are not considered. \nThe adjustments you make to an image should result in an “altered reality” and not simply the removal\, adjustment\, or replacement of an element.  You should be able to see immediately that the photograph has been creatively manipulated. \nIn-camera techniques can be employed and you can play with the myriad programs and plugins\, tools and techniques that are available to digital photographers and this competition will be the one place where anything goes as long as it is your original work.  Some examples might involve painting filters\, distortion\, abstracting your image\, applying a creative filter\, mirroring\, compositing\, etc.\, etc.  Get creative! \nFor Reference: NVPS Competition Themes – Future\, Current and Past – NVPS \nThe judge for this competition is Rosalie O’Donnell. \nBIO \nRosalie O’Donnell graduated from American River College in Sacramento\, CA and the University of California at Berkeley with her BA in the Practice of Art.  She went on to do graduate work at the University of California at Davis where she earned her teaching credential in art and music. \nA painter and printmaker\, Rosalie has shown her monotypes and etchings in California and the Washington\, DC region as well as galleries through-out the U.S\, including The Art League in Alexandria\, VA\, Mattawoman Art Center\, the Ellipse Gallery\, Gallery West\, The World Bank\, the National Institute of Health\, Washington Printmakers and Touchstone Gallery\, Sedona Art Center and Phoenix Economic Development Council annual exhibits. \nO’Donnell moved to Sedona\, AZ in the fall of 2018 and continues to paint and create in a variety of media. She continues to jury exhibits\, advise artists\, and exhibit her own work through-out the country. \nO’Donnell previously worked at The Art League in Alexandria\, VA located in the historic Torpedo Factory Art Center where she was the Gallery Director and Development associate. SUMMARY:Competition with Judge Denise Silva – Theme: “Street Photography at Night”
DESCRIPTION:Competition Theme: “Street Photography at Night” within the past three (3) years \nStreet Photography at Night:  \nFor this theme “street photography” is defined as a photograph featuring (1) the human condition\, or (2) the relationship or interaction between people and their surroundings.  There should be a person in the image\, although that person need not be the subject of the photo. A street photo example could be a candid\, semi-candid or spontaneous (but not staged) photo of a person (or persons) in a public\, private or open place doing something other than posing for you to take their picture.  This is also night photography meaning the image should be taken after sunset and before sunrise. \nFor Reference: NVPS Competition Themes – Future\, Current and Past – NVPS \nThe judge is Denise Silva. \nBIO: \nDenise’s interest in photography started when her grandmother would share images from her travels to Egypt and Africa for safari. The evenings watching slideshows set the seed. 35-years later those seeds took root and inspired Denise to embrace photography and more specifically travel photography and Road Runner Photography Tours was born. \nDenise has been recognized as one of the Top 200 Women Photographers Who Inspire by Nature Photo Guides and has had multiple articles published in Extraordinary Vision (EV) Magazine\, and is a featured artist in Breakthrough Photography’s Guide to Night Sky Photography.  \nHer passion is to share her knowledge of photography\, while introducing people to the amazing landscapes\, wildlife\, and people all over the world.  \nShe has contributed multiple articles to Fujifilm X/GFX USA website and has been interviewed by Peggy Farren\, of Understanding Photography\, on Overcoming the Challenges of Street Photography (Check the interview out here).  \nRecognitions: \n\nThree images published in Black & White Magazine\, 2021\, Smartphone issue.\nFeatured in the 2021\, Lenswork\, Our Magnificent Planet 2021 edition.\nAwarded in Alternative Digital Processes category\, Black & White Magazine\, Looking Forward–Looking Backward 2022.  \n\nDenise embraces the idea that everyday above ground is a good one\, so get out and enjoy! DESCRIPTION:Competition Theme: Open within the past three (3) years \nThe judge is Greg Holden. \nBIO: \nGreg Holden is a photographer from Longmont\, Co who uses his photography to share with others how he sees the world. He enjoys creative photos of little scenes often overlooked by others rather than postcard landscapes. SUMMARY:Competition with Judge Max Waugh – Theme: “Abstracts”
DESCRIPTION:Competition Theme: “Abstract” within the past three (3) years \nAbstracts: An abstract photograph may isolate a fragment of a natural scene in order to remove its inherent context from the viewer\, it may be purposely staged to create a seemingly unreal appearance from real objects\, or it may involve the use of color\, light\, shadow\, texture\, shape and/or form to convey a feeling\, sensation or impression. Close ups of common objects\, reflections on moving water are some examples. Generally\, the subject is not readily identifiable. “Basic” post processing is allowed. Software add-ins and tools such as liquify\, textures\, etc. are not allowed. Stacking multiple images\, zooming\, and panning done by the photographer are permitted. SUMMARY:Competition with Judge Jean-Pierre Plé – Theme: “Old”
DESCRIPTION:Competition Theme: “Old” within the past three (3) years \nOld : People\, places\, or objects that are showing their age. Helpful definitions: 1. Having lived for a long time; no longer young. The hands\, eyes\, faces of older people are classic examples. 2. Made or built long ago. Dilapidated barns\, antique cars or trucks are good examples. No dead\, or dying flowers or plants; in their relative life span they are old but it defeats the purpose of this theme. \nJean-Pierre Plé is a fine art photographer who embraces the concept that photography gives us a chance to see ourselves\, to see our emotions\, and maybe to see something about ourselves that we have never seen before or we were not able to give voice to.  He is drawn to making images where a strong visual and emotional message is formed by shapes\, lines\, or contrast in color or tones.  \nHis photographs have transitioned from an original interest in nature\, landscapes\, abstracts and architecture\, to a current focus on a contemplative approach to photography\, which often depicts his subjects in a non-representational manner.  Sensing a deep desire for photographers to experience greater meaning in their work\, he developed a workshop exploring a contemplative and mindful approach to photography.  While he employs DSLR\, mirrorless and iPhone cameras\, he is also a recovering large format film artist and misses the slow\, methodical\, and mechanical components of large format.   \nHe is a member of the North Bethesda Camera Club.  His work has been part of numerous exhibitions in the Washington\, DC area\, including Washington Printmakers Gallery\, Waverly Street Gallery\, Photoworks Gallery\, Nature Visions\, Herndon ArtSpace\, the Joe Miller Gallery\, PhotoWalk in Crystal City\, Touchstone Gallery\, Lowe House Building\, and the Dupont Underground.  His professional career is in the field of international ocean affairs and he works for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

SUMMARY:End-of-Year Competition and Awards Banquet with Judge Jean Pierre Plé
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to our very last meeting of the 2020 – 2021 season\, NVPS End-of-Year Awards Night! Since we unfortunately cannot get together for an actual dinner and happy hour\, it will be held virtually (via Zoom). We will have the full program of awards\, just no food. Any eating and drinking will be on your own! \nThe official program will begin at 7:00 pm with an expected social time to begin at 6:30 pm. \nJean Pierre Plé has been chosen to judge winning images from the 2020-2021 NVPS competitions for the end-of-year competition. \nJean-Pierre is a fine art photographer who embraces the concept that photography gives us a chance to see ourselves\, to see our emotions\, and maybe to see something about ourselves that we have never seen before or we were not able to give voice to.
