SUMMARY:Programs - (Zoom) The Art & Science of Abstraction with Deborah Loeb Bohren
DESCRIPTION:Bio\n\n\n\nDeborah Loeb Bohren\n\n\n\nDeborah Loeb Bohren believes the essence of photography is the art and science of painting with light and she uses her camera like a paintbrush\, the world like a palette. She thinks of her work as visual alchemy: a transformation not of matter into gold but rather of shape\, light\, shadow\, color and line into art. Minimalism\, in-camera multiple exposure and intentional camera movement (ICM) are all essential tools of her alchemy. Deb finds using these techniques are a form of controlled chaos — simultaneously controllable yet unpredictable— allowing her to challenge reality and capture a feeling or impression rather than replicating reality with precision \n\n\n\nHer work has been recognized and exhibited across the country and internationally in solo and group shows\, and is also part of private and corporate collections nationwide. She serves as a judge and guest presenter for camera clubs across the US and England. She teaches a range of photography courses online and at the Silvermine Arts Center in Connecticut. as well as teaching a range of photography courses. Her newest venture — The Traveling Lens — has her leading travel photography workshops in London\, Paris\, Tuscany and New York City. Deb also chronicles her global adventures in words and images for Everett Potter’s Travel Report. \n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\nIn this presentation\, Deb will explore the art and science that underlies the creation of successful abstract images. She will look at the role the elements of art and principles of design play in abstraction\, as well as examine how Gestalt psychology influences the way we “see” abstract images. Deb will also discuss how abstraction challenges photographers to think differently\, pushing them beyond traditional ways of seeing and composing images\, as well as talk about using techniques like ICM and multiple exposure for creating abstract images. The goal is for participants to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of abstraction\, and begin to develop a toolkit for working abstractly with their cameras. \n\n\n\nAll images created by Deborah Loeb Bohren: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLisbon\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLisbon

SUMMARY:Education & Training - (In Person) Bring Your Camera Night
DESCRIPTION:Our in-person meeting on Tuesday\, November 10\, 2026\, will be “Bring Your Camera Night\,” with several stations set up to encourage you to try something different. \n\n\n\nA first for the club\, we will have access to the firehouse garage and an opportunity to shoot images of the trucks\, equipment and hopefully some firefighters. Let’s plan on gradually filtering through the firehouse rather than visiting en masse. To state the obvious\, if the firehouse gets a call we’ll need to depart. \n\n\n\nThere will also be other opportunities to try your hand at creating images at different activity stations. Exercise your creative side by playing with aspects of still life photography. Feel free to bring your camera\, tripod\, remote trigger or cable release\, lenses (macro if you have one)\, and a smartphone (or iPad). We will supply tools and subjects for abstract photography with oil/water and water droplet refraction. We will also have light tables and product box setups for composing still life subjects. \n\n\n\nAlso\, if you have gear whose time has come which you think others might enjoy\, please bring it! We’ll have tables reserved as a “Swap Meet” area so clean out your camera closet and bring the items you would like to give or sell! \n\n\n\nFurther details will be in an eBlast email.

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Great Falls Park (VA) at Sunrise
DESCRIPTION:Great Falls marks the end of the “piedmont”\, where the Potomac River starts the final descent to the tidal Potomac that runs through Washington DC. After dropping over the falls\, it runs through Mather Gorge. The 800-acre park offers many opportunities to photograph landscape\, nature\, and history. Sunrise is 7:00 AM\, the same time the park gates officially open. We encourage you to arrive right on time to take advantage of the first rays of the sun. \n\n\n\nThis is a “rain or shine” field trip as misty\, rainy mornings have their own unique charm. (We will watch and if heavy rains or storms are expected we will reschedule for the next weekend.) \n\n\n\nOverlooks 1 and 3 provide the best view of the falls themselves. Overlook 2 has a partially obstructed view of the falls but does provide a good view downriver towards Mather Gorge and the rising sun. There is a steep and rocky trail to a fishing and kayak put-in just before Overlook 3. This trail is not always open and can be treacherous when dark or wet. Further south of the overlooks\, as the River Trail enters the forested area there are a few trails that allow access to the riverbed itself. Again\, these trails are very steep and rocky and can be treacherous. \n\n\n\nThe River Trail\, part of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail\, runs next to the river from the Potomac River Dam on the North (where it meets the River Bend Trail) to the Ridge Trail to the South. The River Trail is listed as Moderate to Hard but provides many spectacular views of Mather Gorge. Other trails provide quiet\, forested\, walking where you may encounter wildlife or historical remains such as the Patowmack Canal. \n\n\n\nAs the morning progresses there may be both kayakers and rock climbers. Kayakers are often visible from the overlooks; the rock climbers are further downstream on the River Trail. Past experience is the rock climbers are often not visible from the River Trail itself\, but some of the climbing routes are visible from side trails. Reminder: All side trails from the River Trail are rugged and can be treacherous. \n\n\n\nThe Great Falls Park Web site has trail maps and a great deal of additional information: Great Falls Park (U.S. National Park Service) \n\n\n\nGreat Falls Park is also included in the NPS App: The NPS App – Digital (U.S. National Park Service). \n\n\n\nGreat Falls Park has very poor cell service. Be sure to print any maps from the web site or use the “Download for Offline Use” on the NPS App BEFORE you leave your house. \n\n\n\nEquipment: \n\n\n\n● Your camera and your standard “walk-about” lens \n\n\n\n● A wide-angle lens may be useful \n\n\n\n● A long telephoto if you plan on wildlife photography \n\n\n\n● Neutral Density Filter \n\n\n\n● A headlamp or flashlight for pre-dawn \n\n\n\n● Sturdy tripod and remote release for long exposures that smooth the falling water \n\n\n\n● Sturdy shoes and hiking staff or sticks if you are shooting at Overlook 1 or any of the side trails \n\n\n\nOther Inspiration: \n\n\n\n● NVPS Field Trip to Great Falls Maryland: Great Falls – November 2020 – Northern Virginia Photographic Society \n\n\n\n● Great Falls Park Photo Gallery (NPS): Photo Gallery – Great Falls Park (U.S. National Park Service) \n\n\n\nWhen: \n\n\n\nSaturday November 21\, 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM. (Rain date is Saturday\, November 28\, 2026) \n\n\n\nSunrise is at 7:00 AM. Park gates open approximately 7:00 AM. Sometimes the gates are open a few minutes before 7:00 AM. \n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\nGreat Falls Park9200 Old Dominion DR\, McLean\, VA 22102 \n\n\n\nWe will meet on the sidewalk just North of the visitor center (the end closest to the main parking lot).We will meet just North of the Visitor Center on the trail that leads from the main parking lot to the Visitor Center and the three Overlooks. This is where the path from the parking lot divides into both an “up” and “down” ramp\, as well as a short stairway. \n\n\n\nThere is a $20.00 admission fee to Great Falls Park. If you have an “America the Beautiful—the National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass”\, admission is free. \n\n\n\nAfter Field Trip Snacks:Roots Café\, 8100 Old Dominion DR\, McLean\, VA 22102 \n\n\n\nSeton Droppers\, Bill Huddleston\, Didem LenzField Trip Coordinators 2026-2027

SUMMARY:Member's Gallery (In Person) (Prints) - Some of My Favorite Prints with Philip Winters
DESCRIPTION:Bio\n\n\n\nPhilip Winters\n\n\n\nPhil began taking pictures as a kid with an old family camera. Through his teens and after high school\, he had a series of SLRs\, including one of his father’s older rangefinders. Fast forwarding\, Phil has had various digital cameras and now uses a Sony 6300 and 6600\, which he’s very happy with. He also keeps a Nikon point-and-shoot in his car\, just in case\, and of course has his phone ready for any photo emergencies. \n\n\n\nHe is very glad he joined NVPS many years ago—so long ago\, he says\, that it feels like forever\, but in a good way. Through the club\, he has learned a great deal\, including better composition\, enough Lightroom to feel almost comfortable\, and\, thanks to demonstrations at meetings\, how to mat his prints.    \n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\nPhil’s prints this evening show his wide range of photographic interests and techniques: reflections\, architecture\, machinery\, ICM\, panning.  He continues to hone his craft. \n\n\n\nAll photos taken by Philip Winters:

SUMMARY:Members’ Forum (In Person) - Blur with Gary Perlow
DESCRIPTION:Bio: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGary Perlow\, an ex-New Yorker\, has been living in the northern Virginia area for over 30 years.  He was a home builder who especially enjoyed designing kitchens and bathrooms.  He is presently actively involved in commercial real estate investment. \n\n\n\nHe began taking photographs seriously around 2013\, and has been a member of NVPS since 2018.  His favorite genres are conceptual\, landscape\, and portrait.  Always looking to grow as a photographer\, he enjoys learning\, studying\, and experimenting with new ways to express ideas visually. \n\n\n\nGary has won awards for his photography\, including a national best-in-show in monochrome in 2024 from the Photographic Society of America\, two best-in-shows from Nature Visions/MAPV in 2019 and 2022 (as well as in a variety of categories)\, and the NVPS’s Ollie Fife award in 2022. \n\n\n\nHe has been exhibiting photographs in galleries around the country and in Barcelona\, Spain. He currently is participating in a group show at the Carter Burden Gallery in Manhattan. \n\n\n\nBlur: \n\n\n\nBlur in photography is something we have always experienced many times – but it is not always a flaw: it can be a powerful tool for expressing emotion and creativity.  By intentionally incorporating blur\, photographers can enhance the storytelling aspect of their images and create mystery\, as well.

SUMMARY:Education & Training: (In Person) Anonymous Critique with Judy Guenther\, Bill Millhouser\, and Deb Rose
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nLike most NVPS members\, Judy\, Bill and Deb have entered countless photo competitions and have had numerous favorite images shot down by judges. It is important to pay attention to detail when taking a photo and processing it. But it is also important to remember the reason why you took the photo\, what it was that caught your eye\, and if you conveyed that vision to the viewer. \n\n\n\nThe NVPS Anonymous Critique is a great opportunity to get feedback on your images. The process is anonymous\, so you have nothing to lose. Examples of the kinds of images you might want to submit for critique include: \n\n\n\n\nImages you think are keepers but may need a little help\n\n\n\nExperiments with new processing techniques\n\n\n\nImages you are considering for competition\n\n\n\nImages you shot on Field Trips or Bring Your Camera Night\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe sole purpose of the anonymous critique is to help you grow as a photographer. You will not be identified unless you identify yourself by making comments or asking questions about your images during the meeting. \n\n\n\nThe firm deadline for image submission is 6 p.m. on Tuesday\, November 24\, to allow time for David Crooks to anonymize the images and for Judy\, Bill and Deb to review them before the December 8 meeting. \n\n\n\nSubmitting Your Images\n\n\n\nYou can submit up to three images. \n\n\n\n–Resize Your Image(s)\n\n\n\nSize images the same way as for our monthly competitions\, that is\, not to exceed 1400 pixels horizontally or 1050 pixels vertically. Image resolution should be set to 127 pixels per inch (PPI). Image format is jpg. Color space is sRGB. \n\n\n\n–Rename Your Image Filename(s)\n\n\n\nFile naming is important. Include the image title preceded with 1-\, 2-\, or 3-. Examples: 1-Fishing Boat.jpg\, 2-Old Dock.jpg\, 3-Hawaiian Sunset.jpg. Files starting with 1- will be highest priority\, 2- medium priority and 3- low priority. Depending on the number of images submitted\, we may not get thru them all so number your most important image with a 1-. Spaces are OK\, but do not use any special characters in the file. \n\n\n\nNote: Since those critiquing will see the filenames\, do not include your name there\, just the number prefix and image title. \n\n\n\n–Drag-and-Drop Your Images into SmugMug\n\n\n\n***Look for the drag-and-drop instructions in an eBlast to all of the current NVPS members.*** \n\n\n\nQuestions?  Contact the Education & Training Coordinator Mark Seklecki\, whose email information can be found at Board Contacts. \n\n\n\nBiographies:\n\n\n\nJudy Guenther\n\n\n\nJudy Guenther\n\n\n\nJudy Guenther\, photographer\, enjoys capturing scenes from her world travels in a variety of styles from storytelling to discovering small details in ordinary scenes. Capturing the beauty and art in nature and the people of the world is a special joy for her. Judy also enjoys photographing details in architecture and looking for abstracts. She has won several awards\, most recently the grand prize in the Washington Post’s 2022 Travel Photography Contest. She is a member of the Northern Virginia Photographic Society and The Art League in Old Town Alexandria. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBill Millhouser\n\n\n\nBill Millhouser\n\n\n\nBill became interested in photography in the early 1970s\, starting with a used Yashica SLR moving on to a series of Canon film SLRs. In 2001\, Bill dove in the digital age and bought the Canon D30\, which had a rather modest 3.25 megapixel sensor and a blazing 3 FPS frame rate. \n\n\n\nSoon after retiring in 2010\, Bill attended his first photographic workshop in Costa Rica\, which exposed him to the wonderful variety and color of tropical birds and the proper use of big telephoto lenses (both on a tripod and handheld)\, the use of fill flash\, and the complexities of multi-flash setups to capture the beauty of the region’s many hummingbirds. His keen interest in wildlife and bird photography has since led him to visit many locations throughout the Mid-Atlantic region\, the West Coast\, New Mexico\, Florida\, Belize\, Central and South America\, as well as several trips to Africa\, \n\n\n\nSince joining NVPS\, Bill has served as the Field Trip Coordinator\, Co-VP of competition\, and President of the Club. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDeb Rose\n\n\n\nDeb Rose\n\n\n\nDeb developed a passion for photography when she transitioned from work life\, and she and her husband\, Art\, began traveling and exploring the world. This passion evolved to include all genres including travel\, street\, landscape\, night sky\, wildlife\, and most recently macro photography with insects. Deb enjoys exploring philosophical and creative elements of capturing and post processing her images.  A member of NVPS since 2017\, she has served as Members Gallery Coordinator\, VP of Competition\, assisted with Portfolio Project\, and most recently served as President. SUMMARY:Competition: (Zoom) Theme: Industrial with Judge Russ Young
DESCRIPTION:I began photography as the high school yearbook photographer using a 4×5 Speed Graphic; the very definition of immersion. My senior year\, I worked after school as the darkroom monkey for a commercial & industrial photographer. These experiences still shape my imagery as I still shoot film and large format. I taught for The University of Texas at Austin and Ohio Wesleyan University. My specialties are the history of Pictorialism and 19th century printing methods. \n\n\n\nSaint Andrews University (Scotland) granted me a Ph.D. in art history for my dissertation on soft focus lenses and Pictorialism. file:///C:/Users/russ/Downloads/WRussellYoungPhDThesis.pdf (warning: reading it has been known to induce narcolepsy).  \n\n\n\nThe Royal Photographic Society denominated me as a Fellow about 20 years ago. \n\n\n\nLiving for 18 years on an isolated farm near The Blue Ridge\, landscapes have been the primary subject of my cameras. Although I capture the landscape with both film and digital\, the vast majority of my images are black & white. Impossible to avoid\, I use PhotoShop and its ilk minimally. My photographs have been viewed in both one-person exhibitions and group shows.

SUMMARY:Competition: (Zoom) No Theme with Judge Brian Zwit
DESCRIPTION:Brian Zwit\, formerly just a photographer and educator in northern Virginia\, added filmmaker to his resume during the pandemic years.  \n\n\n\nWhile still enthralled with still photography\, he is using video to expand his storytelling options and range of subjects. When shooting stills\, his favorite subject is the elegance and majesty of nature\, particularly landscapes. When filmmaking his favorite subject is the human condition—telling the unique and unusual stories of the everyday person. In addition to his favorite genres\, he dabbles with photographing and filming protests\, dogs\, travel adventures\, and street life. \n\n\n\nBrian has been teaching photography more than ten years for workshop companies and non–profits including the Ward Museum\, Chincoteague Bay Field Station\, and camera clubs in the Mid–Atlantic. He is an exceptional Lightroom instructor and he has had more than 1\,000 students attend his Lightroom training. Brian also speaks to camera clubs\, schools\, and other organizations on creativity and other photographic techniques. He is well known for his ability to distill complex topics to their essence and explain them in simple\, easy–to–understand ways. \n\n\n\nBrian’s favorite assistant is Dingo\, a Parson Russell Terrier\, who really is not very helpful\, but is always ready for a walk in the woods. She also reminds him not to get too obsessed with work\, photography\, and filmmaking and just enjoy life. Brian’s website is Images by Brian J Zwit.  \n\n\n\nBrian has been a speaker for NVPS and a frequent reviewer for the Portfolio Project’s final reviews.

SUMMARY:Member's Forum - (In Person) Travel Photography with Cameras that Fit in Your Pocket with George Hogeman
DESCRIPTION:Bio: \n\n\n\nGeorge Hogeman\n\n\n\nGeorge Hogeman retired in 2019 following 31 years with the Department of State\, including 22 years overseas mainly in Africa and Asia. Earlier he met his wife Geri while serving in the Peace Corps in Kenya. In 2014\, he began shooting mirrorless when he bought an Olympus E-M10 and since acquired an uncomfortably extravagant number of other mirrorless cameras\, lenses and accessories. He enjoys infrared and astrophotography and visits Huntley Meadows at least once a month.  \n\n\n\nDescription of the Presentation: \n\n\n\nGeorge and his wife Geri have had the good fortune to have made several overseas trips since George retired in 2019. Sometimes\, their travel has required them to travel lightly without confirmed access to airline overhead bin space so cameras and personal items had to fit under the seat. Furthermore\, several of these have been group tours where opportunities to slow down and compose an image with an interchangeable lens camera are relatively rare. Despite these challenges\, he has enjoyed taking pictures while traveling and has been pleased with the images he has been able to create. Thus\, he has carefully narrowed his travel cameras to those that are small\, turn on fast and focus quickly\, including the TG-7 from OM Systems (formerly Olympus) and the Ricoh GRIII and GRIIIx. Each of these cameras has particular strengths and weaknesses but they complement each other remarkably well.  \n\n\n\nIn the presentation\, George will show several cameras and share some of the images taken by these cameras from Morocco\, Japan\, France\, Spain\, Portugal\, Italy and elsewhere. All images created by George Hogeman:
