Welcome to February!   After an eventful January that included an insurrection, an inauguration and a new administration, we are looking forward to a calmer February.  As usual, we have scheduled a set of meetings designed to help you become a better photographer.

As of this writing we begin the month with a presentation by Colleen Miniuk titled “The Joy of Little Things: Macro Photography.”  Colleen is a freelance outdoor photographer, writer, publisher, instructor, and motivational speaker.  She has been published in National Geographic calendars, The Smoky Mountain Journal of Photography, and a variety of other publications, and she comes to us as a highly rated presenter.

Our Education and Training Meeting will feature the first preliminary review of Portfolio Project (PP) submissions.  Ginger Werz-Petricka, Willa Siegel, and Brenda Wilson, co-chairs of the Portfolio Project this year, will offer their feedback on key aspects of each portfolio presented: the artist statement, how it reflects portfolio content, and the cohesiveness of portfolio images. The preliminary review aims to enable PP participants to fine-tune their work for final review by an outside, professional photographer in April or May

The judge for our February competition will be Max Waugh.  Max’s work has appeared in such publications as Africa Geographic and ESPN the Magazine, and has been displayed at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. and the Natural History Museum in London.

Remember that we have revised the rules of competition for this year only, and have included the revised rules on the website.  To find them on the website, go to the Member Menu, select Competitions, then Rules of Competition.  Please review the rules carefully before you submit your images.

Member’s Gallery and Member’s Forum sessions will round out the month.  Jack Ledgerwood will share selected prints in a session titled “Canadian Rockies” and Karol and John Murray will offer a presentation of digital images titled “Abandoned Spaces.”   Finally, Wayne and Judy Guenther will present a Members Forum titled “Planning Travel for Photography.”

I look forward to seeing you at the meetings.  Stay safe and well.

Ron
