Fall is a great season for capturing color and mood.   Although we have to be more careful this year because of Covid-19, we can still go outside before Winter’s chill, and we can still appreciate the long shadows and muted shades that November brings.

As of this writing we begin the month with Joe Rossbach’s presentation, “Make the Ordinary Extraordinary.”  In addition to being a nature and landscape photographer, Joe is the co-author with Ian Plant of “50 Amazing Things You Must See and Do in the Greater DC Area.”  That might come in handy now that long-distance travel is a bit more problematic.

For several years we have supported Nature Visions, which has been renamed Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions (MAPV).  This year’s virtual sessions, led by Rick Sammon and Kristi Odom, will be held on November 7th, along with the awards ceremony for Nature, Photo Art and Youth competitions. More information can be found at Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions. Voting for the People’s Choice Awards is now open.

Our first Anonymous Critique will be held in November, and we have two of our most experienced photographers, Stan Bysshe and Kathryn Mohrman, leading the session.  Anonymous critiques are among the most valuable learning opportunities we offer, particularly for members who want to learn how to improve their images but prefer not to enter competitions.

Our November Field Trip will be to nearby Great Falls, Maryland.   It is hard to take a bad picture of Great Falls (although I have managed several) and it is a good location for maintaining appropriate social distancing, practicing what we learned from Lynn Cates’ presentation on water photography and working a variety of angles and perspectives of a single subject.

The competition in November will be judged by Mollie Isaacs, who was our Programs speaker in October.  Although there is no theme, remember that we have revised the rules of competition for this year only, and have included the revised rules on the website.  To find them go to the Home page and select Activities and then Competitions.  Please review the rules carefully before you submit your images.

We will conclude the month with two Members Galleries – “Bears of Brook Falls” by Jerri McDermott and “America the Beautiful” by Lynn Cates – and a Members Forum, “Go West Roadtrip” by Sidney Stone.

I look forward to seeing you at the November meeting.  Stay safe and well.

Ron
