Photoworks Gallery in historic Glen Echo Park is proud to present its annual tribute to documentary photography -- Mirror To The World: Documentary Photography 2012. Mirror To The World seeks to celebrate narrative photography -- story telling in photos and words. The work this year spans the globe, with picture stories from Indonesia, Italy, China, the Pacific Northwest -- and Washington, DC. Curated by nationally recognized documentary photographer and author Frank Van Riper, this show offers both intimate and wide-ranging glimpses of daily life, augmented by the exhibiting photographers' own written text to create a textured narrative for the viewer/reader. This year's exhibition, featuring work in both color and black & white photography, will include remarkable visual essays on floating Indonesian fishing platforms, ice climbers on the Matanuska Glacier in Alaska, a selection of black and white photos from some of China's quieter and more peripheral places, and a moving account of a homeless woman's struggle for survival in Washington, DC -- within sight of offices housing big-ticket lawyers and lobbyists. The show will also include a joint photo essay from Umbria, Italy's only landlocked region, reflecting the warmth and beauty of an area that is often called "Tuscany without the tourists." "There
literally will be something for everyone," notes Van Riper, co-author of the
internationally acclaimed photography book Serenissima: Venice in Winter." As in the past, I am delighted to present the
work of these 'not-yet-famous' photographers." |
