Competition
December 15th, 2009 - Competition with Judge Frank Van Riper
On Tuesday December 15th, we will hold our fourth competition for the 2009/10 club year with Frank Van Riper as our judge. There is no specific theme for this competition. Frank Van Riper (www.GVRphoto.com) is an award-winning documentary and fine art photographer, journalist, and author whose work has been published internationally. His work is in the permanent collections of the National Museum of American Art and the National Portrait Gallery (Washington, DC), as well as the Portland Museum of Art (Portland, Maine). His 1998 book of photography and essays, Down East Maine/A World Apart, was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and won the silver medal for photography from the Art Director's Club of Metropolitan Washington. His latest book, done in collaboration with his wife and professional partner, Judith Goodman, is Serenissima: Venice in Winter, a coffee table collection of black and white photographs and essays, published both in the US and Italy to rave reviews. His first book of photography, Faces of the Eastern Shore, was published in 1992. His book, Talking Photography, a ten-year collection of his columns and other photography writing, was published in 2002 ( www.TalkingPhotography.com ).Before that he was a political writer and editor in the Washington Bureau of the New York Daily News, serving as White House correspondent, national political correspondent, and Washington bureau news editor. He was a 1979 Nieman Fellow at Harvard and holds the 1980 Merriman Smith award from the White House Correspondents Association. Van Riper's gallery exhibitions include the Kathleen Ewing Gallery and the Touchstone Gallery in Washington, DC, the Hudson Museum of Anthropology at the University of Maine at Orono, and the Albin Kuhn Gallery at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
