Many photographers like nature photography and some wonderful images of nature are produced. Others produce competent images -- all well done, all well exposed, all reasonably well composed, all sharp if needed to be sharp, all potential ribbon winners, all so slightly different they all seem the same. Among the icons of photography, Ansel Adams is known primarily for his nature work, but many other great photographers are not - - Weston, Cartier-Bresson, Stieglitz, Steichen, Evans, Lange, Karsh, Newton, Mapplethorpe, to name a few.
My kingdom for the brave photographer who dares to be different, who dares to develop his/her own artistic vision and style. Personally, I intend to spend the rest of my photographic life promoting photography as art. Today there is a veritable tsunami of excellent photographs made every day. How does one produce an image that is good and also unique and different? Mimetic photography, regardless of how well done, is not enough. Technology makes it easy for us to produce a good photograph. Finding our own style is another matter.
