President's Message

June 2014 – Final Message from Outgoing President, Mike Whalen

It has been my great pleasure and privilege to serve as your president for this past year. And it was wonderful to see the growth of so many photographers at all levels. The number and quality of the images presented in our meetings this year was both humbling and inspiring and I am proud to be in the company of so many talented people who share a common passion.

Next year, NVPS will celebrate its 50th anniversary and with approximately 250 members, it is also the largest photos club in the DC area. This long and rich history provides tremendous momentum with well-established weekly programs and format. Also, the large pool of members and the willingness of the many volunteers definitely make the president's job more of a pleasure than a burden. The old Chinese proverb, "Many hands make little work," definitely applies here.

Thanks to our many volunteers
As I said back in September, the many volunteers are the machinery of NVPS and these are the people who deserve most of the credit for the successful operation of the club. I would like to offer my sincere thanks to the more than 30 people who served and provided so much of their time to NVPS this past year:

As you can see, NVPS, an all-volunteer organization, depends heavily on the efforts of so many people to make our programs, activities and operations happen. I was lucky to have such a talented and energetic staff this year and I am grateful for all the time and effort they put forth. Thanks to all who volunteered for other important jobs like making coffee, bringing cookies, helping with the many tasks of competition and End-Of-Year competition and other things that people do to make the club more enjoyable and efficient.

Thanks to our judges, speakers, critiquers, teachers, senior members and mentors who, by sharing their skills and knowledge, helped our members learn something new about photography.

Thanks to Georgette Grossman for taking on the job of president next year and, to the new members of next year’s board.

And finally thanks to our members who shared their images in competitions and other NVPS activities, and in doing so, provided enjoyment and inspiration to others.

Final Thoughts
Have a safe and enjoyable summer, take lots of great photographs and I look forward to seeing you this fall.

Thanks and best regards,
Mike Whalen

Competition Themes for 2014 – 2015

Street Photography

For this theme “street photography” is defined as a photograph featuring 1) the human condition or 2) the relationship or interaction between people and their surroundings. A street photo example could be a candid, semi-candid or spontaneous (but not staged) photo of a person (or persons) in a public, private or open place doing something other than posing for you to take their picture.

Water

From a single drop to a mighty ocean, and anything in between, water is the theme of this monthly competition. It can be still or moving but liquid water must be a key subject of the image.

Still-Life

For this theme, a still-life is defined as an artistic arrangement or collection of non-moving inanimate objects, either natural or man-made. The arrangement can be arranged by the photographer or someone else such as in a store-front window of flower bouquet. Please, no architectural subjects such as buildings or bridges, people, landscapes or moving objects for this theme. The still-life must be the main subject of the image.

Editor's note: We like to share competition winning images on the website and include a representative winner from each category in the monthly newsletter, but we cannot do this unless the photographer specifically grants permission. When you win a ribbon in the competition, please remember to grant permission. See the note in the following section for details.

May Competition Results

Our final competition of the year was one of our finest with Judge Roy Sewall giving us wonderful critiques and suggestions. It was "Oldies Night", the photographers had an opportunity to enter their images taken more than two years ago. I thought I might have seen some vintage prints. Some interesting stats: we had 132 total pictures reviewed by Roy, 995 total submitted for the year and an average of 124 photos a month. Wow, we have one prolific group of photographers!

End of Year Awards

Congratulations to all of this year's competition winners and also those photographers who participated each month in showing their images . Thanks to all of our helpers each month especially Melanie Marts and Chuck Campbell for handling the prints; Jeff Hancock, Matthew Schmidt, Scott Musson and Andrew Fritz for their digital support.

The End-Of-Year competition and banquet requires the work of many volunteers. Beth Morris and I wish to thank the following people for helping to make the End-Of-Year Banquet the social event of the camera club year.

Chuck Veatch from Nature's Best Magazine for judging the EOY Images and also for donating two subscriptions to our door prizes.

Jeff Hancock
, Matthew Schmidt and Brian Payne, for the digital show and projection . Ed Funk for ordering EOY plaques and trophy engraving. Dale Nelson for arranging the banquet hall and facilities. Georgette Grossman for design and printing of the EOY certificates and programs. Minnie Gallman for making label cards for the winning prints. Newsletter Editor's Note: Congratulations to Mike on this great recognition for a truly wonderful image. This is a classic example of why we need to remind ourselves that the judges have major variation in their preferences. When Mike entered this same image in the October 2013 monthly competition, the monthy competition judge gave it an honorable mention. Our year end competition judge saw this as the best of the best. In describing his choice, Judge Chuck Veatch said this image is "an outstanding example of careful and thought provoking composition and creative processing that stood out and brought me back to view many times."

The full listing of award winners is available at: http://nvps.org/home/?p=5200.

A number of members were promoted from one class to the next due to the number of points they gained during competitions. Those details are also listed on the website at: http://nvps.org/home/?p=5254.

Field Trips

Saturday July 5th: Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens

Bob Friedman and Mike Whalen will be conducting a summer field trip to Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens (KAG) on Saturday, July 5. Plan to meet at KAG parking lot near the garden entrance at 6:30 AM or inside the park if you come later. This garden offers one of the largest display of lotus flowers and water-lilies in the Washington DC area. It is run by the National Park Service, is free to the public and bathrooms are available. Directions and other information can be found on the KAG website: http://www.nps.gov/keaq/planyourvisit/directions.htm

It seems that telephoto and macro lenses are most popular in the park to capture close-ups of the plants, bugs, birds, amphibians and other park inhabitants. A tripod and a circular polarizer may also be helpful. Also, the grounds could be muddy so wear appropriate footwear. In the event of rain, the field trip will be postponed by one day to Sunday, July 6 at the same time. We hope you can make it, but if not, the lotus flowers should be in bloom through July. This is a great opportunity for some unique nature photography close to home.

Note: Remember to lock your car and remove all valuables from plain sight.

If you are interested in meeting up with other NVPS members during the summer to do a less formal photo shoot, check out the club's Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/NVPSPhoto/

If you are looking for other interesting photo destinations in the DC area, the club has descriptions of a number of lesser known photo destinations in the DC area at: http://nvps.org/home/?page_id=140

There is also a club site on Flickr and although it has been relatively inactive over the past few years, it is still up and available for Flickr users who are willing to share: https://www.flickr.com/groups/thenvps/pool/

September 6th: Field Trip to the National Zoo

This year’s field trip coordinators, Bob Friedman and Mike Whalen, will be hosting the first club field trip to the National Zoo in Washington DC on Saturday, September 6. Meeting time will be at 7:45 AM at the visitors center. Bob and Mike will be joined by noted zoo photographer and lecturer, Don Johnson who will be offering tips and suggesting good photo ops. Don was the program speaker at NVPS on October 1, 2013 ( http://nvps.org/home/?p=4331 .) More details to follow.

Notice: The information about workshops and events not sponsored by or affiliated with NVPS are provided as an informational courtesy to Members. Editor's Note

This is my last issue of FotoFax. After three years of producing the newsletter, Alan Goldstein is taking over. I have enjoyed the opportunity to contribute to the club and have appreciated the occasional feedback from members. Some of the feedback was even constructive! As always, if you encounter any problems reading FotoFax, please let me know.

Newsletter Editor nevermore, Dan Ward
