May 2014
May is the last full month of NVPS's 2013-2014 club year and as usual, it will be filled with many great Tuesday night activities. Please check with FotoFax or the NVPS website for May details. The grand finale for the year will be the End-Of-Year banquet on Friday evening, June 6. This is always a fun evening where we get to see all of the wonderful (best of the best) EOY photo entries. We also announce the winners of the EOY competition, the photographers of the year, and give out EOY member awards. This is a great way to finish off the year so please come and join us! Dinner will be provided and dress is casual. Bring a date or come alone. Friends and family members are also most welcome and you may purchase tickets (from treasurer, Tom Brett) at any club meeting or online via PayPal.
This month I look forward to hearing Karen Messick speak on May 6 about creative macro photography and Impressionism photography. Some of her work could be called artsy or painterly and all of it is inspiring. Karen also has other specialties like working with Lensbaby lenses and iPhone photography.
Elections for next year's executive board will also be held during the meeting on May 6. No additional nominees have been tendered, so elections will be conducted by a show of hands. The nominees are presented in FotoFax and on the website. Please come and show your support for next year's elected board.
On May 13, we are honored to have pro-photographer and artist, Jim Steele (Torpedo Factory Studio #343), give final critiques of our portfolio projects. Jim also critiqued our portfolios in 2012. His comments are always thoughtful, educational and constructive. Hats-off to all who completed a portfolio project and many thanks to Jim for his help this year. Next time you are in Old-town Alexandria stop by his studio at the Torpedo Factory.
Another highlight for the month of May is Joe Miller's Abstract Photography Exhibit that will be open May 2 at his studio in Gainesville, VA. (The exhibit is open any Friday, Saturday, or Sunday in May, 12:00 – 5:00 PM. Reception: Sunday, May 4 from 2:00 – 5:00 PM). If the past 3 year's exhibits are any indication, this one will also be an overwhelming success. Come see 125 highly creative, unusual and artistic entries from artists in four states and South Africa. Serious photographers will not want to miss this show. Congratulations to those NVPS member whose work had been juried into the exhibit.
As this NVPS club year winds down, so does the term of current board members. I want to offer my sincere thanks and appreciation to the board and to the many volunteers who are responsible for the seamless operations of the largest photo club in the DC area. I also want to thank our members, judges, speakers and presenters who have shared their artistic talents, skills and photographic knowledge. Your efforts have served as an inspiration for all of us. Being associated with NVPS for the last four and-a-half years has been a wonderful opportunity and learning experience for me personally. If you have not yet done so, I highly recommend getting involved as a volunteer in the years to come.
Final thoughts
As we move forward into summer, take with you the knowledge you have learned. Look for unique photo opportunities where it seems none exist and keep an open mind. Take lots of pictures, and practice your art whenever possible.

May 6th: Karen L. Messick – Macro and Impressionism
Our May speaker, Karen L. Messick, is an award-winning photographer. She has been capturing images for 19 years. Her sense for
design, color, composition and placement of subject elements is striking. The patterns in her
nature close ups are called "refreshing and energizing" as we will see during her presentation on Macro and Impressionism in Photography.
Karen is self-taught and has participated in photographic workshops with professional nature
photographers, John and Barbara Gerlach, Doug Johnson and Tim Cooper. In addition, she has
attended photographic seminars by The Nikon School, Rod Plank, Brenda Tharp, Moose
Peterson, Tony Sweet, Rick Sammons, John Barclay and John Sexton.
Karen's instructional articles and portfolio pieces have been published in iPhoneLife
Magazine and Nature Photographer and she is currently a field contributor for Nature
Photographer.
Karen teaches Intro to digital photography and iPhone Photography courses at Johns Hopkins University,
in the Odyssey Program.
Karen has conducted workshops and lectures for Penn Camera, Horizon Photography Workshops
and Capital Photography Center.
She currently has images on Display at Baas Fine Art Gallery in Seattle, Washington and More

May 13th: James Steele – Portfolio Review
Ginger Werz Petricka and Ken Barnett are happy to announce that Jim Steele, known to NVPS from earlier projects and competitions, will be the reviewer for this club year's Portfolio Project.
James (Jim) Steele is a photographer in the tradition of Ansel Adams and Edward Weston. Working primarily in medium and large format, Steele's "scapes" of land, sea, and body represent the finest in traditional and digital photographic imagery.
Jim has studied with Cole Weston, George Tice, Joyce Tenneson, Christopher James, Carson Graves, and Martha Casanave.
In the Washington DC area Jim's work can be seen in Studio #343 in the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, VA.
Jim has taught photography courses and workshops at the Art League School in Alexandria, VA, the Smithsonian Institution, VISARTS, Photoworks, Inc. at Glen Echo Park and has guest lectured at Georgetown University. In addition, Jim has taught numerous workshops in digital printing.
The sharing and review of all the participant's efforts for the year will be on Tuesday, May 13. We are looking forward to an evening of inspiring artistic visions!

May 20th: Competition – Judge Roy Sewall – "Oldies" Night
We are pleased to welcome back Roy Sewall to be our May Competition Judge. This is “Oldies” night meaning you can submit images that were photographed more than two years from the competition date. Lets wrap up the year with all your best!
Roy Sewall spent most of his youth in India, Pakistan, Indonesia, and the Philippines; his State Department family’s home base was the Washington, D.C. area. Roy has a BS in Physics from Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland and a MS in Engineering Science from Penn State. He returned permanently to the Washington area in 1969 and worked for several major technology corporations for over 30 years.
Roy’s interest in photography evolved from extensive travel in six continents. In 2001, he started his transition to full-time photographer. He always found the Washington area to be one of the most photogenic locations in the world. Roy’s first photography book, Our Potomac, from Great Falls through Washington, D.C., was published in 2005. It was inspired by his affection for hiking and bicycling along the river and the adjacent Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal. The book has led to numerous lecture and slide show engagements with local organizations, and established him as one of the leading photographers of the Potomac River and C&O Canal.
In 2007, Roy became the first Chair of the Board of Directors for the C&O Canal Trust, a non-profit friends group for the National Park Service. In 2013 he joined the Board of Directors of the Potomac Riverkeeper. Roy has done extensive photography work for river- and C&O Canal-related government and non-profit organizations, as well as private and commercial clients.
Roy’s second book, Great Falls and Mather Gorge, was published in 2009. In addition, he was a guest on WETA’s TV program Great Views of Washington D.C., the lead photographer in the Best of D.C. 2009 publication, in the feature articles in the 2009/2010 D.C. and 2012/2013 Virginia Where Guestbooks, the lead still photographer in The Nature Conservancy’s 2011 video The Potomac Gorge, and a featured guest on Montgomery Community Media TV in 2012.
After completing his first two books, Roy turned to the creation of large fine art prints. He has developed diverse bodies of work for exhibitions that include unusual foreign and domestic landscapes, old European architecture, historical re-enactment, and abstracts. In addition, he offers both private and group instruction to novice and intermediate photographers, and in 2014 became an instructor for the Capital Photography Center.
But he saya his foremost passion is his ongoing project called “Mysterra” that conveys mystery, illusion, fantasy, and sensuality.
Competition Themes for 2015 – 2016
Architecture: Images of man-made structures including bridges, buildings, alone or collectively; parts of buildings such as arches, columns, ceilings, cupolas, stairways etc. Architectural structures within a landscape environment also accepted, such as a pergola or gazebo.
Creativity: This theme is meant to push the boundaries of your creativity through use of in-camera and / or computer processing techniques. Examples being, multiple exposures, zooming and camera manipulation, panning, layering with textures, lighting techniques, digital painting, anything goes! A time to show off your processing techniques.
Portraiture: The subjects for this theme can be people or other animals, primarily capturing the face; but full figure is acceptable, for example, a wedding portrait also shows the dress. Both formal and informal (candid) captures allowed but keeping the main subject as an individual.

May 27th: Tom Brett – Interesting Photographic Journey in China
Our Fourm Speak for May is Tom Brett.
He tells us
"China was my 59th country visited & one of the most interesting photographically. The 3 1/2 week photography trip included a number of PSA [both US & China] big–wigs & visited only 3 areas of this huge country – Inner Mongolia, coastal fishing villages south of Shanghai & the Beijing area. My photographic subjects included many people who seemed unfamiliar with Westerners & cameras. The people seemed to be very curious and friendly.
Although personal wealth is increasing, many people seem involved in manual labor and small scale business. The majority of people whom I saw are not rich. Other photographs show scenery, living areas in cities and villages, some animals and other interesting scenes from those 3 areas of China. My favorite images are from the coastal fishing area. My hope is to return to China in the next year for photography in other areas – or, the same areas again."
Tom’s "life's work" involved college graduation from The Citadel with a Regular Army commission as an Infantry officer. His 30 1/2 Army years were extremely satisfying and involved plenty of travel, including 7 overseas assignments [with 3 combat tours] and 3 years of teaching at West Point. His photography introduction came at age 23, but was strictly at amateur level and only during Army off-duty time.
After Army retirement, Tom earned both photography degrees from Northern Virginia Community College. He found NVPS
about 16 years ago and has been a Board member for about 14 years, having held 7 positions, including Secretary, Treasurer, VP for Competition, VP for Programs & President. He has been named Photographer of the Year four times, with three Images of the Year. Among his most important training has been almost all of Joseph Miller's workshops & Freeman Patterson's South Africa workshop. Tom has been awarded the NVPS Distinguished Service Award and NVPS's highest award, The Joe Atchison Award For Outstanding Service.

May 27th: Prints – Claire Carroll
Claire Carroll started photography with a Brownie Starmite at the age of eight. Photography formed a small part of her BA (Honors) in Fine Art and she has been shooting ever since. However, only in the last few years has she chosen to approach it in a more "professional" way.
Wildlife photography is her passion with a preference for birds but joining NVPS and being part of a wider community of photographers has prompted an interest in other subjects and a desire to experiment with different styles and techniques. Her mind is more art than science and technically she finds all aspects of photography a challenge! She is extremely grateful to her friends at NVPS who have taught her so much and given invaluable support and encouragement over the last two years.
Claire shoots Canon and her favourite piece of equipment is the 100-400 L lens.
Claire is also an actress and has had various roles in theatre and film over the last 15 years. Her most notable, and long running, performance is as a talking portrait in Hogwarts at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios, Orlando. She has written and produced her own one woman show, Beef Encounter, which she has performed at various theatre festivals in the USA and UK.
She is married to the long suffering Steve, who is a Commander in the Royal Navy. (editor's note: Thank you, Commander Steve, for your dedicated service to our society both at work and at home! )
Claire has had images juried in to Nature Visions, Vienna Arts Society and The Art League at the Torpedo Factory. Four images were selected as finalists in the Homage to Winogrand contest judged by Ksenya Gurshtein, Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Curatorial Fellow, Department of Photographs, National Gallery of Art.
She won second place for her image, Blue, at the Herndon ArtSpace 2014 Fine Art Photography exhibition and the Juror's Award for Lifesaver in the Art League's Pop Art exhibit in April 2014.
May 27th: Digital – Susan Phillips – Feeling Nature's Beauty
Susan S. Phillips will present a music/video show of her favorite landscapes photographed between 2009 and 2013. As the title suggests, nature is the source of inspiration for the images. Although Susan shoots many other subjects in nature like florals and wildlife, she wants each of her videos to focus on a particular theme; this being the landscape. The pictures were taken in various locations within the US including Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming. All images were digitally enhanced to create an artistic version of the scene. The addition of music adds another expressive element to the visual and creates the dynamic feeling.
Susan joined the NVPS in 2009, an has actively participated in competitions and activities winning many ribbons . She is currently co-VP of Competitions managing over 100 entries a month in print and digital classes; including a different judge each month from outside the club. She feels this has been a wonderful experience working with fellow Board members and providing the opportunity for members to show their work. In 2010, Susan won an award from Lowe Pro at the Nature Visions Mid-Atlantic Photo Expo; 2011 at Nature Visions she won "Best In Show", also awards from Corey Hilz Photography and Olympus Camera for her pictures. In 2011, she was juried into the Joe Miller Abstract Photography Show. 2012, received 2nd and 3rd place awards for Wildlife in the Claude Moore Park Photography Expo. 2012 juried into Nature Visions; 2013 Exhibited at Vienna Art Society Photography Show. 2013, she tied for most juried into Nature Visions from NVPS with 7 photos. 2014, she won Honorable Mention for Small Creatures in the Washington Gardener Magazine Photo Contest and published in their spring issue; the photo will be exhibited at Meadowlark Gardens in Vienna.
Susan has a Bachelor of Fine Art Degree from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania and worked as an Art Director / Designer using the camera for many ad campaigns and source for design. She was a Photographers Rep for the group Focal Point selling stock photos and assignments in the days before the computer. That job led her to Xerox where she was Sales Rep for the Mid Atlantic Region . In getting back to her creative side she started her own Landscape Design Company photographing all of her projects for the company portfolio to show prospective clients. It wasn't until 2001 that she started using a digital camera to document her sons rowing and also her ladies golf league. The digital game was the game changer! Since 2008, she has taken workshops and classes with Alan DeFelice, Jack Nevitt, Corey Hilz, Elliot Cohen, Joe Rossbach, Mark Lissick, Mary Louise Ravese, Richard Bernabe, Ian Plant, George Stocking, Colleen Miniuk Sperry,
Jackson Bridges, Sue Bloom and the Nikonians.
Susan will continue on her journey of fine art photography, learning new skills and being renewed in the divine beauty of nature.

May 18th: Battle Creek Cypress Swamp
In May, we will visit a unique National Natural Landmark in Maryland. Battle Creek Cypress Swamp is one of the northernmost stands of bald cypress trees and the only large stand of those trees on the western shore of Maryland. A quarter mile long wooden boardwalk snakes around these relics of the past. Distinctive, knobby cypress "knees" emerge from the water near the boardwalk providing many photographic opportunities.
On spring mornings, visitors will be serenaded by birds such as the golden-colored Prothonotary warbler and the ground-foraging Louisiana waterthrush. Admission is free.
The park opens at 1PM on Sundays and closes at 4:30PM everyday.

NVPS End of Year [EOY] Banquet
The banquet will be on Friday night, June 6th. It will be a wonderful evening of all the winning images from the EOY competition, your NVPS friends, great food and desert, plus recognition of NVPS people. The location will be Tysons Westpark Hotel, right off Leesburg Pike [Rt 7], at 8401 Westpark Drive, Tysons area, McLean, VA. 22102.
Cocktail hour [cash bar] at 6 PM; dinner at 7 PM. The cost is $35 per person in advance [$40 at the door]. The NVPS Board will subsidize each person’s fee to keep the price at $35. It will be a very fun evening. You will be able to pay by check, cash or Paypal through the NVPS website.

NVPS Nominations and Elections Club Year 2014 – 2015
The NVPS Constitution and By-Laws require the appointment of a Nominating Committee to prepare a roster of proposed officers, in support of the required annual election. Nominees must agree to serve, if elected. The list of nominees is below and was announced, as required, at the second club meeting in March.
NVPS members may submit additional nominations by the second club meeting in April, in writing, to the Chairperson of the nominating committee. Nominations from members must be seconded by any club member, other than the candidate. The candidate must confirm in writing his/ her willingness to accept the nomination and serve, if elected.
The NVPS election will be at the first club meeting in May. It will be by voice vote, if there are no additional nominations, or, by written vote, if added nominations have been made.

Fourth Annual Joseph Miller Abstract Photography Exhibit
The Fourth Annual Joseph Miller Abstract Photography Exhibit will be open every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in May from Noon to 5pm. There are more than 100 amazing abstract images in the exhibit, which clearly show that photography can be art. This exhibit is well worth seeing and should not be missed by any serious photographer.

NATUREVISIONS 2014
Mark your calendars!
The 2014 NatureVisions Expo will be held Friday, November 14 - Sunday, November 16, at the Hylton Performing Arts Center, Prince William Campus, George Mason University, Manassas, Virginia.
The NatureVisions Board is pleased to announce that award winning nature photographer and author, Rick Sammon will be this year's Expo keynote speaker. Rick will also conduct a one-day seminar on Friday, November 14, the opening day of the Expo.
By popular demand Julieanne Kost, Principal Digital Imaging Evangelist for Adobe Systems, will return to the Expo and give two free presentations on Sunday, November 16.

Northern Virginia Alliance of Camera Clubs (NVACC)
The Northern Virginia Alliance of Camera Clubs (NVACC) is an informal entity started in 1997 by Joseph Miller with the assistance of Dave Carter and Ed Funk. Its purpose is to promote communication and cooperation among area camera clubs. NVACC is made up of Member Clubs and Associated Member Clubs.

A few weeks ago, one of the Nikonians Group photographers asked the question "When is it okay to photograph a homeless person?" His concern was that the law is fairly clear about not being able to photograph someone without their awareness or permission when they have a reasonable expectation of privacy. Simply stated, the principle is that you can photograph your neighbor walking down a public street because they cannot reasonably expect to have privacy on a public street, but if you use a telephoto lens to photograph them through a window inside their house, you have trespassed because it is reasonable to expect some level of privacy within one's home. The questioner's concern was that if a street person's home is the street, then are we trespassing when we photograph them there?
What do you think? Do homeless people give up a reasonable right to privacy? I disagree with the concept that a street person owns or even rents the street, but I do see the point and due to the discussion, I would no longer photograph a homeless person who is sitting inside a jury-rigged shelter under an overpass unless I asked permission first.
On a lemonade from lemons note, I stopped by the Calumet clearance sale and spoke with Jerry Smith. Some of the employees have already found new jobs. Jerry said they were frustated because the local store was actually doing well, but the corporate collapse brought all the stores down. Jerry has created f8 Rentals to continue to provide quality photo equipment rental for this area.
