I’m sure most of us are happy to see the month of March quickly fade away in the rearview mirror. Hail springtime! Finally we can do some serious outside photography again without the fingers and toes going numb.
The cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin have been delayed by a week or so and now will occur in early April. As of this writing, peak might be April 8-12, but watch the news carefully as the dates could change. My advice is to get there very early in the morning, (like around 5:30am) and certainly bring a flash and tripod. IMO, the first light is best. Pick a non-windy, non-weekend day if possible. See last month’s message for more information. If the weather doesn’t spoil the party, this is the best show in town this month and it’s free.
April is also a good time for tulips. The Franciscan Monastery in northeast DC comes highly recommended with a beautiful garden and interesting architecture. Also check out what’s in bloom at the US National Arboretum (northeast DC); and see Burnside Farms in Haymarket, VA for a local tulip farm.
If you haven’t heard the news, camera chain Calumet unexpectedly filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on March 13 for its US stores. Two remaining popular local brick and mortar stores in Northern Virginia are PhotoCraft (Burke) and Ace Photo (Ashburn). Check them out if you are feeling the loss of Calumet. Whenever possible, support your nearby stores since its good for everybody including our local economy. In many cases these stores will match valid low internet pricing. If you are looking for very decent prints at a great price, try Costco. In the past many of my images were printed there and I was always very satisfied with the quality. Upload the images, and pick up the prints in an hour.
The field trip on Saturday, April 5 will be to the historic waterfront neighborhood in Baltimore known as the Inner Harbor and the adjacent Fell’s Point area. Expect to see old colorful buildings, wall murals, the Baltimore skyline, tall ships, interesting shops, cafés, and people plus more. More information is available on the NVPS website and the FotoFax newsletter. Be sure to contact Chuck or Tom to sign up.
If you are interested in taking a workshop to extend your skills, look first in FotoFax under “Workshop Offerings”. Many or our judges and speakers who provide photo tours and workshops are listed there along with links to their websites. It is a good place to start.
Also, mark your calendars; the date has been set for the End-Of-Year Banquet for Friday evening, June 6 at the Best Western Tysons Westpark hotel. More details will be announced soon.

April 1st: Mary Louise Ravese – Abstract Photography
Mary Louise Ravese returns to NVPS as our April speaker. Making the successful abstract photograph – from subject selection to techniques and design. Capturing abstract images can hone the photographer’s eye and inspire improvement in both traditional and creative photography. Mary Louise will share her observations on how to make a compelling abstract photograph, as well as how the process has influenced her personally. She will describe the many ways that her abstract explorations have evolved how sees photographically and approaches a broad range of subjects from nature to architecture, still life and beyond.
For over 20 years, Mary Louise has specialized in outdoor color photography from locations across the U.S., Europe and Japan. Her favorite subject matter includes country landscapes, nature close-ups, interesting architectural details and wildlife. She draws inspiration from a variety of visual arts to produce photographs often described as painterly.
Using both film and digital equipment, her photographs are about intriguing juxtapositions of vibrant colors, distinctive shapes, and unique textures. She believes it is important to stay true to nature and does not digitally manipulate her photographs to generate unrealistic images and instead takes the time and care to produce the best in camera images possible!
Mary Louise studied photography through the University of California Berkeley and Santa Cruz extension programs. She also credits a number of photography mentors including Barbara Brundege, Mark Citret, Jean-Louis Martinetti and Harold (Doc) Edgerton. She is a member of the North American Nature Photography Association, the American Society of Picture Professionals, and the Equine Photographers Network.

April 8th: Matthew Schmidt – Anonymous Critique (and Swap Meet)
NVPS members have an opportunity to submit one or two photos for our upcoming anonymous critique. This critique will be conducted by Matthew Schmidt of Lorelei Studios and also a member of NVPS.
Matt will be providing his constructive feedback on the images submitted and the photographer's name will not be announced. Particularly for newer members with less experience in competitions, the anonymous critique enables the photographer to get feedback in a public setting without being identified.
Depending on the number of images submitted, Matt will evaluate one, two or more per photographer. Please indicate which image you'd like to be shown first, second.

April 15th: Competition – Judge Sue Bloom – Famous Places Theme
Co-Vice Presidents of Competition, Susan Phillips and Beth Morris are pleased to welcome back Sue Bloom as the judge for our Apri1 15th competition. Sue most recently visited us as our November 2012 Speaker.
Susan Ruddick Bloom is known for her fine art photography. She uses alternative photographic processes and digital manipulation. Sue has been involved in making art on the computer for thirty years, since the introduction of the Mac in 1984. She holds a BFA and a MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. She is Professor and was a longtime Chair of the Department of Art and Art History at McDaniel College, in Westminster, Maryland.
In addition to her college and workshop teaching and exhibitions Sue leads photo tours throughout the world. She has just returned from Italy and has a trip to France coming up this fall, and Italy again in May 2015. (Current workshops are listed in the Workshops section of the newsletter).
Sue’s book, Digital Collage and Painting, by Focal Press, was released in 2006, and has been translated into Chinese and Russian. This 608 page book is seen as the Bible for digital collage and painting manipulation and is used as a text in colleges with a digital fine art curriculum. A second, revised version of that book, was released in 2010. Sue is also the author of Digital Painting in Photoshop (2009).
She was part of a four-person show, Four Visions, that traveled throughout the US for nearly two years. The show was all infrared photography and contained over 100 images NS
recently mounted a semi-retrospective (last 15 years) of 150 pieces of art in December 2013 entitled, Artifacts, at the Rice Gallery.
Sue writes articles for leading photography magazines including Shutterbug and After Capture. She is a regular contributor to Australia’s Better Photoshop Techniques. She conducts live webinars and teaches at the Maine Media Workshop, Glen Echo’s PhotoWorks and Common Ground. Her work may be viewed at: www.suebloom.com .

Our competition for March with judge Andy Jezioro had 115 total entries. Digital Category Class 1 had the most entries with 22; and in the Monochrome Print Category, of all Classes combined, had the most prints with 26 entries. Many thanks to Andy for his interesting, instructive and sometimes humorous critiques. As always our photos keep getting better and those that did not win should also be acknowledged for their participation and in keeping with the club spirit of learning.

April 22nd: Bill Vanderpool
In his presentation called SURVIVAL FOR OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHERS,
Bill Vanderpool will be giving helpful hints and information on basic survival techniques for photographers and others venturing outdoors. Covered will be prevention and basic skills required to Come Back Alive.
He will also address acquiring or building a basic survival kit to carry when you leave your car to head down that trail and, most important, how to build a fire.
Bill, a former law enforcement officer, has studied survival techniques for many years and has written articles on the subject. He will bring several sample commercial kits with him as well as his own. He has built survival kits for relatives and friends, including hunters and even for a well known actor who hunts in wild country.

April 22nd: Prints – Chuck Campbell
Chuck Campbell is currently the CEO of a small Health IT company who considers himself to be an advanced amateur with aspirations of one day shucking his suit and tie and becoming a professional photographer. He first took up photography in the late 70’s shooting mostly black and white using a Canon AE-1 and printing images in a bathroom that he converted to a darkroom. During 30 years of moving around the country as a member of the US Air Force, he took a few photography classes, but still shot mostly documentary snapshots. Throughout those years, Chuck maintained his love for photography and of course the new gadgets and cameras, starting with his first digital camera, the Canon G3 in 2002.
In 2010, Chuck decided to get more serious about becoming a better photographer and after looking at many options, chose to join NVPS. He attributes his advancement as a photographer to the wonderful programs and opportunities NVPS offers and the individual members who are always willing to share their insight and experience. Chuck is currently a Co-VP of field trips and greatly enjoys the opportunity to see new places. Working to become a better photographer, he is currently a student in the Washington School of Photography’s Professional Program.
One of Chuck’s passions is traveling and exploring new places. For the Member’s Gallery program he will present printed travel images taken during recent trips to Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Denmark and Sweden.
April 22nd: Digital – Marilyn Gaizband and Sam Schaen
For the April Member's Gallery, Sam Schaen and Marilyn Gaizband will present digital images from their recent trip to Antarctica. Their trip began in Ushuaia at the southern tip of Argentina and took them to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and the Antarctic peninsula. They were gone nearly the entire month of November. Of all the trips they've taken, both regard this trip as their favorite.
Sam and Marilyn joined NVPS in September 2003. In 2004, Marilyn and Sam served jointly as co-VPs for competition. Subsequently, Marilyn served as field trip coordinator and Sam served as President, Newsletter Editor, Database Coordinator, VP of Operations, and Special Board Member.
Marilyn received a Nikormat camera from her sister for her 40th birthday. She learned black and white photography including wet darkroom at the Corcoran School. After they met in 1983, she taught Sam photography. He brought his knowledge of computers which would become more important as they moved to digital photography. They will celebrate their 28th anniversary in April.
The two consider themselves serious amateurs. Both have won photography awards. Sam won the NVPS End-of-Year Advanced Digital Image award in 2011. Marilyn has had an Honorable Mention in Natures Best as well as a Best in Bird Category photograph in Nature Visions 2013. The couple mainly photograph wildlife, particularly birds. They enjoy traveling around the U.S. and abroad pursuing their hobby. Some U.S. locations they've explored include Bombay Hook (near Dover DE), Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge (near Cambridge MD), and Bosque del Apache (south of Albuquerque). They have photographed in south Texas and the Florida coasts as well. Overseas, they have been to Ecuador, Costa Rica, Argentina, Canada, Kenya, the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and Antarctica.
They both use Nikon digital cameras. Until recently they used D300s. On the trip to Antarctica, they saw the advantages of some of the newer cameras and have recently added a D610 to the collection. They have a variety of lenses that cover from 12mm to 500mm. For their wildlife photography, they mostly use 80-400mm, 200-400mm and 500mm lenses.
Marilyn had a career in Marketing and retired as VP of Marketing from a small firm 5 years ago. Sam is a Computer Engineer who has recently cut his work schedule to half time.
The couple's plans include a trip to Magee Marsh in Northeast Ohio in May to catch warbler migration, a trip to Scotland in June, and a trip to Yellowstone National Park in January 2015.

Education & Training – Fifth Tuesday
April 29th: Joel Goodman - Camera Technology
Most photographers have some idea of optics and a making an image. The adjunct of that is that most photographers have little idea what is actually happening within the image pipeline. Joel Goodman hopes to demystify some of that, filling in some of that knowledge and helping the photographer understand how a camera operates beginning with the observation that the camera in your hand is a special purpose computer.
Size and weight limit what is practical in cameras. How do we know what camera is best for our needs? He hopes to give the photographer knowledge to ask questions as to where camera technology is going and whether that is interesting or worthwhile to the photographer. The camera is our tool. Knowing how to use it and knowing its limitations (technology limitations) are an imperative.
Joel received his Bachelors in Engineering Physics from Cornell, a Masters in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Illinois, over 30 graduate hours in Physics, and numerous courses in communications and systems engineering. He retired three years ago.
He initially took up photography in 1972 with a Mamiya Sekor 1000. In 2000, after a trip to Alaska during which he shot 28 rolls of high speed Ectachrome ($10/roll, $10/roll processing) shooting a total of 110 rolls that year, he deemed the capital cost to be more than worth the elimination of supply cost for film camera operation and purchased his first digital camera. Pursuing his version of excellence in photography ever since, he says he has not yet reached it. He has attended many workshops with some effect on his photography, which NVPS as re-enforced. His photography interests are nature, sports and automobile.

April 5th: Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and Fells Point
On Saturday, April 5th we will explore Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and Fells Point. A historic seaport since the 1700’s it is one of the most photographed and visited areas of the city. Visually stunning any time of the day, it is one of Baltimore’s favorite locations for photography workshops. Water, nautical sights and historic buildings combine together to provide an abundance of great image opportunities. Within the Inner Harbor you’ll find the last Civil War vessel afloat, the USS Constellation and the tall ship, Clipper City. If you like the hustle and bustle of a true urban market, the Inner Harbor houses Harborplace with over 160 popular shops and restaurants where you can wine and dine, visit the Maritime Museum and take in some beautiful Inner Harbor views.
Adjacent to the Inner Harbor is the Fell's Point historic waterfront neighborhood in the southeastern area of Baltimore. If you are interested in architectural photography, Fell’s Point, founded in 1730, includes a diversity of historic architecture. Flemish bond brick is used in some of the earliest homes while row housing is prominent in eighteenth and early twentieth century construction. Gabled roof buildings and Victorian homes are also interspersed with other housing.
Baltimore Meeting Place:
A good place to meet is the Corner Bakery Café located across the street from the Baltimore Aquarium. The address is 500 E. Pratt Street, Baltimore. On Saturdays the café opens at 6:00am. On April 5, the morning of our field trip, sunrise is at 7:06am with morning civil twilight at 6:39am. I recommend meeting around 6:15 to give you time for a relaxing cup of coffee before heading out. Driving time is roughly an hour from the Dunn Loring Fire Station to the café.
Parking: There is a parking garage directly across from the Corner Bakery Café located at 400 E Pratt St, Baltimore. Their site says it is open 24/7.
On weekends, many garages offer a discounted all-day flat rate of $7-$10.
Small self-pay lots tucked around the waterfront area can be a good deal. These unattended lots usually have a flat rate of $5-7 for the day. Park in a spot, and check the number painted on your spot. Slip your cash in the corresponding slot in a metal box.
Getting to Fells Point from the Inner Harbor is quite a long walk. Instead you can drive or take a nice boat ride on the Baltimore Water Taxi from Harborplace or the Aquarium to Fells Point. You can get an all-day BWT ticket for $12 and hop on and hop off as much as you like the entire day.

NVPS Nominations and Elections
Club Year 2014-2015
The NVPS Constitution and By-Laws require the appointment of a Nominating Committee to prepare a roster of proposed officers, in support of the required annual election. Nominees must agree to serve, if elected. The list of nominees is below and was announced, as required, at the second club meeting in March.
NVPS members may submit additional nominations by the second club meeting in April, in writing, to the Chairperson of the nominating committee. Nominations from members must be seconded by any club member, other than the candidate. The candidate must confirm in writing his/ her willingness to accept the nomination and serve, if elected.
The NVPS election will be at the first club meeting in May. It will be by voice vote, if there are no additional nominations, or, by written vote, if added nominations have been made.

It is hard to believe that Spring is officially here, finally!!!
The Portfolio Project has been underway for several months now and a lot of you have posted images to your folders in the Gallery. It has been great to see what you have done, and we encourage you to look at everyone else's images and to give some feedback. It is always good to hear what other people think of our work, it helps us grow and can be the catalyst that makes a good presentation into a great one.
For those of you who are working on your concepts but have not posted anything yet, we look forward to seeing what you have been doing!
As for the rest of the club, if you have not signed up for the project, you have a little more time. If you have been working on a concept that you want to share join the project! Sign up instructions:
1. Get registered as a gallery user by going to http://nvps.org/gallery/main.php and clicking on register (upper right hand corner). Follow the directions on the screen to get yourself a login and password. If you are already a registered user of the gallery then you start at step two.
2. Send your gallery user name (not your password) to
portfolio-gallery" at "nvps.org and request Portfolio Project participation.
3. You will receive an email confirming creation of your album at which point you will be able to upload pictures as well as comment on other member's pictures.
The final review is on May 13 so we want to make April 30 the cut off for new entries and changes to existing folders. Depending on how many people end up uploading images for review we want a maximum of 12 to 15 of your best images plus the artist statement as the number that will be shown for each of you. For those of you who have a story-like theme it's equally important to establish a flow, dawn to dusk, spring to winter, general to specific, old to new, perhaps a color flow, there are a lot of ways to tell a story.
And then you need to think about how you will present your images to the club on May 13th. After all this effort you should think of how you want to show the world your achievement. Remember that the restriction on the number of images only extends to the review part of the evening, for your entire portfolio you can include as many images as you feel is appropriate to achieve your goal.
There are a lot of ways to show your work, you can do prints, a book, or even an auto-visual presentation in a laptop. A number of sources are available and we highly recommend you checking out the excellent presentation by Scott Musson in the club archives at http://nvps.org/home/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/PhotoBooksCalendars.pdf
If you do a book, My Publisher, Blurb and Shutterfly all offer easy to follow instructions and quick turn-around time. The main thing is we want to get a chance to see what you have achieved and it's nice to have something tangible for yourself, your friends and your family.
So remember the dates, upload your final portfolio by April 30 and be there on May 13 for the final review!

NVPS End of Year [EOY] Banquet
The banquet will be on Friday night, June 6th. It will be a wonderful evening of all the winning images from the EOY competition, your NVPS friends, great food and desert, plus recognition of NVPS people. The location will be Tysons Westpark Hotel, right off Leesburg Pike [Rt 7], at 8401 Westpark Drive, Tysons area, McLean, VA. 22102.
Cocktail hour [cash bar] at 6 PM; dinner at 7 PM. The cost is $35 per person in advance [$40 at the door]. The NVPS Board will subsidize each person’s fee to keep the price at $35. It will be a very fun evening. You will be able to pay by check, cash or Paypal through the NVPS website.

NATUREVISIONS 2014
Mark your calendars!
The 2014 NatureVisions Expo will be held Friday, November 14 - Sunday, November 16, at the Hylton Performing Arts Center, Prince William Campus, George Mason University, Manassas, Virginia.
The NatureVisions Board is pleased to announce that award winning nature photographer and author, Rick Sammon will be this year's Expo keynote speaker. Rick will also conduct a one-day seminar on Friday, November 14, the opening day of the Expo.
By popular demand Julieanne Kost, Principal Digital Imaging Evangelist for Adobe Systems, will return to the Expo and give two free presentations on Sunday, November 16.

Steve Gottlieb Steve Gottlieb was our November 2012 judge. He is Director of Horizon Photography Workshops where he and other instructors offer workshops all year round. The Horizon Summit on March 1- 2 in Wilmington, DE, has lecturers covering travel, landscapes, Photoshop, history, flash, glamour, animals, new equipment, and more. The Travel Photography Satisfaction class will show novice and experienced photographers how to increase their satisfaction with their travel photos, handle a variety of situations, protect their images and equipment, and use photography to plan their trips. Adam Jones was our Program speaker in September 2013. He is a popular and respected workshop instructor and lecturer. She is conducting a Cherry Blossom Photography Workshop sponsored by The Art Museum of the Americas in Washington DC. Northern Virginia Alliance of Camera Clubs (NVACC)
The Northern Virginia Alliance of Camera Clubs (NVACC) is an informal entity started in 1997 by Joseph Miller with the assistance of Dave Carter and Ed Funk. Its purpose is to promote communication and cooperation among area camera clubs. NVACC is made up of Member Clubs and Associated Member Clubs.

While camera technology seems to be reaching new heights every few months, many old institutions are not surviving modern times. Mike Whalen mentioned the loss of Calumet in his note for April. The bankruptcy of Calumet followed that of Penn Camera only two years ago. One after another, local camera stores are finding it hard to survive in a world where high volume internet sales and big box stores can offer prices that are hard for smaller stores to match. It costs money to have a building and staff. Ten years ago, we had dozen camera stores of varying size and service offerings in Northern Virginia. Today, only Photocraft in Burke and Ace in Ashburn offer a full line of cameras and supplies. Those of us who prefer to be able to touch and try equipment before we buy need to patronize these stores, or else they could follow the others into the history books.
Ilford filed for bankruptcy in February. Several NVPS members are concerned about losing their fine line of image papers. Their Gold Fibre Silk is a favorite paper for some NVPS photographers, but we may have to learn if Canson Baryta Photographique is actually as close as some claim. Kodak discontinued many of their films. For a challenge, just try to find Polaroid film for any of their earlier cameras. As Yogi Berra said, The future ain't what it used to be.
If there is a message for us, it is that in these turbulent times, we cannot assume our favorite products or stores will be available in the future.
