Remembering Bill Prosser
Last month was a sad time for NVPS. We lost our friend and longtime member, Bill Prosser. Bill passed away unexpectedly on September 23 while travelling in China with his wife, Ann.
Bill was very active in NVPS. He was a passionate, talented and respected photographer who joined NVPS in 1990 and had won numerous awards including "Photographer of the Year" on multiple occasions. He received the honored "Joe Atchison" award for service in 2008.
Among other things, Bill was responsible for starting and managing the Portfolio Project at NVPS which continues to be a very popular activity. His obituary in the Washington Post is here.

Bill will be fondly remembered by the many people he touched and guided through the years. His service and contributions to NVPS have been unmatched. Nature Visions
The most important photo event for November is the Nature Visions Photography Expo on November 8-10 in Manassas, VA. This is a big deal for all photographers in the Washington area and should not be missed. The 3-day expo features an outstanding photography exhibit of over 300 juried nature images from 7 area photo clubs plus a second exhibit of non-nature prints. Nature Visions (NV) is not just about nature photography; NV is an excellent learning opportunity for all types of photographers regardless of skill level. Come and participate in some of the lectures (L) or classes (C) and I guarantee you will come away with fresh ideas and feeling inspired.
Noted commercial photographer of 30 years, Bryan Peterson, will be the keynote speaker. Bryan has published 8 best-selling books on photography including the classic, Understanding Exposure. He will present a full day seminar on Learning to See Creatively on Friday, November 8, and an evening keynote address on Creative Use of Ambient and Artificial Light on Saturday, November 9. The expo also features back-to-back lectures and classes (both paid and free) from various talented photographers all weekend.
Be sure to register for the various options online. Do it early as a number of the classes and lectures are already sold out. Note that general admission to the photo exhibits and a few of the lectures and classes are free but you still must register. A brief list of the weekend schedule is presented below. November Field Trip – Bombay Hook
Our November (16-17) overnight field trip to Bombay Hook, DE offers a unique opportunity to photograph migrating birds, potentially many thousands of them. If you have never experienced a bird migration, it is an absolutely awesome experience. The sound of this many birds such as swans or snow geese honking can be almost deafening. This is a perfect time to use your long telephoto lenses. If you don’t have at least a 300mm lens, consider renting one.
Final thoughts
As we transition from fall to winter, this is a good time to start planning for winter photo projects. Consider setting up a small indoor studio; become familiar with off-camera flash; learn a new post-processing technique; experiment; try something different. Nature Visions Expo is an excellent place to come away with some new ideas.

Nov 5th: Alan Sislen - Landscape
NVPS is pleased to welcome Alan Sislen for November’s Program night on Tuesday, November 5th, The Beauty and Challenge of the Landscape. Allan lives in Bethesda, Maryland, has been an avid photographer for more than 40 years. Landscape photography is his passion and he has photographed in the United States, France, Iceland, Italy, Canada, England, Chile, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and New Zealand. Alan is a well-recognized photography educator and speaker.
Although his equipment might be "state-of-the-art," Alan's style and technique are traditional. He has studied with well-known British landscape photographer Charlie Waite, former National Geographic photographer Bruce Dale, digital expert Thom Hogan, black and white master John Sexton, photographic artist and Photoshop expert John Paul Caponigro, fine art photographer Charles Cramer and color management/printing expert Bill Atkinson, and Photoshop expert Eliot Cohen.
In 2005 he was juried into Multiple Exposures Gallery at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Virginia, and was juried into the Torpedo Factory as a Resident Artist in 2006. In 2007, he was juried into VisArts, in Rockville, Maryland as one of 9 Resident Artists. Alan has served on the Board of the North Bethesda Camera Club and been selected as Color Photographer of the Year – Advanced, Black and White Photographer of the Year – Advanced, and Electronic Photographer of the Year – Advanced.

Nov 12th: Jay Heiser - Social Photography
Social photography is the visual capture of the history and meaning of an event (parties, reunions, service projects, conferences, ceremonies, amateur sports, performances, etc.). It is simultaneously a utilitarian form of record keeping and a highly creative genre, enabling the viewer to know, or remember, who was there, what they did, what they experienced, and what the event participants experienced and felt. It is an exciting and fulfilling form of journalistic photography that requires very different skills from the tripod based, painstakingly stalked or staged subjects typical of club competition. This session, which Jay has given in England, Ohio, and Virginia, provides practical ideas for technique, aesthetics, and equipment, covering topics including flash diffusion, subject rapport, software processing and image sharing.
Last year’s NVPS Advanced Versatile Photographer of the year, Jay has been shooting since he was 10 years old, growing up in his dad’s darkroom and benefitting from an active and prize winning high school journalism program. He began club competition while living in England, where he also participated in the Royal Photographic Society and obtained his LRPS distinction. Jay has been shooting exclusively in digital since 1999, although he has fond memories of long hours spent in the darkroom. Nov 19th: Competition - Judge Mary Louise Ravese - Open Theme
Susan Phillips and Beth Morris, Co-Vp’s of Competition are pleased to host Mary Louise Ravese as our November 19th Competition judge. Members are invited to join Mary Louise for dinner at the Olive Garden Restaurant, Tyson’s at 5:30 on the 19th. Please rsvp to competition@nvps.org by the 18th.
Mary Louise is founder and owner of Bella Vista Photography in Waterford, VA. She specializes in nature and
travel photography from locations across the world. Her favorite subject matter includes country landscapes and nature close-ups. She draws inspiration from a variety of visual arts to produce photographs often described as "painterly".
Mary Louise’s fine art photography is in private, university and corporate collections in over 30 states and is exhibited nationally through art shows, galleries and shops. Her images have been used in calendars, magazines, books and websites including various projects with National Geographic maps. Mary Louise is a regular speaker and competition judge for photography clubs in the Mid Atlantic. She also enjoys teaching on a wide range of topics related to nature, travel and creative photography. She leads classes and field workshops ranging from one day seminars in the Mid Atlantic region to multi-day workshops at a variety of locations across the US and abroad. Locally her work is available for sale at the Arts in the Village Gallery in Leesburg, VA. .

All images must have been captured within two years of the monthly competition date. Only club members are permitted to enter monthly competitions. Please upload your digital images by the deadline of 6 pm Sunday the 17th. Prints must be signed in by 7:15 on Tuesday night of competition. Print entries should include name of maker, title of print, and class/category on the back of the mat, with arrow indicating this edge up. Neither name of photographer nor title should appear on the face of the print or mat.

November 26th: John Naman - High ISO Photography
NVPS member John Naman will present the November forum with a presentation on managing High ISO for award-winning competition images. John says:

November 26th: Prints - Bob Friedman -The Best of Bob
Former NVPS President and always active member Bob Friedman will present his prints in the November 26th meeting. Bob says:
"As a teenager I started my photography journey with a darkroom in my parents’ basement which I inherited from my brother. The first thing I did when we bought our house was to build a darkroom in the basement. Today I am 100% digital in color and black and white (my preferred medium.) I have taken courses and workshops at Photoworks at Glen Echo, and with
Freeman Patterson and Andre Gallant in New Brunswick, Canada."
November 26th: Digital - Tom Pratuch - Beginner 2 Beginner
Tom Pratuch says he displayed absolutely no artistic merit from birth. This tragic circumstance led to his high school art teacher taking pity and pointing him towards a small dark room. Who knew a dark room was a darkroom? The sheer enjoyment of watching an image float into being raised no existential questions whatsoever but struck a note of joy. He responded as only a non-artistic person could - Tom chose photographic engineering.
Years of snapshots ensued while mastering the fine art of well exposed pictures with nobody’s head being cut-off and/or most of the subject in the frame. Occasionally the photos rose to the level of documentary in nature. Then, being tired of paying for other people’s art to hang in his house, Tom found he had accidentally taken several photographs that had a small degree of artistic merit.
Joining NVPS in 2010, he entered competition trying several approaches -- Architectural, portrait, landscape, journalistic, travel, and nature. In the end, the old adage proved true - do what you love. Winning awards during his first full year of competition got Tom promoted out of novice. But the typical winning photo was a nature image – and being out in nature is what Tom enjoys most. And thus an accidental photographer was born.

November 3rd - Partial Solar Eclipse
Sunrise on Sunday morning, November 3rd will occur with the sun in a partial solar eclipse. We need special filters to look directly at the sun, but at sunrise and sunset we can view it and photograph it briefly without risking eye damage. In the Washington area, the sun rises during the final stage of the eclipse, with the moon covering 1/3 of the sun as it rises at 6:39 AM. (The sun will be at 120 degrees azimuth - roughly east-southeast.) The eclipse will be over at 7:10, so we will need a low eastern horizon to view/photograph the rising sun with a "bite" missing. As we are in a period of high sunspot activity, we may also be treated to a few sunspots as well. CRITICAL - do not stare at the sun without appropriate filters once it is fully above the horizon. The article has a link to a page explaining how to safely observe the sun.
November 9th - Heart Walk
The American Heart Association (AHA) is looking for a few "wonderful" photographers to donate their time at the American Heart Associations’ Heart Walk event!
Heart Walk is on Saturday, November 9th from 8:30 am – 12:00 pm. The walk takes place on The National Mall between 7th and 14th streets. AHA is expecting 6,000-8,000 walkers from DC, VA and MD to attend the event and would be happy to recognize volunteer photographer's business/name for their in-kind donation on a sign at Heart Walk. AHA will also send a letter that states the volunteer's time was a tax deductible donation for AHA.

November 9 & 10 - Nature Visions
First I would like to thank everyone that participated. NatureVisions appreciates the time and effort you put into preparing and submit your images. It was truly a wonderful collection.
Twenty-eight NVPS members had 93 images juried for the 2013 NatureVisions Expo to be held the weekend of November 8-10. Congratulations to all.
Of special note is Marilyn Gaizband's Eurasian Owl which was selected Best in Category in the Bird category. Also, special mention is due Claire Carol's Family Time, Nancy Dubiell's Father and Son, Marilyn Gaizband's Mandrill, and Ursy Potter's Snack Time which have been selected for NatureVisions travelling exhibit for the upcoming year. Beth Morris' Wall of Fire received votes from all three judges.

November 14th - 17th - Delmarva Nature & Wildlife Photography Summit
The Delmarva Nature and Wildlife Photography Summit is taking place the week after Nature Visions, November 14-17. The summit will be located at the Marine Science Consortium on Wallops Island, VA. Photography locations include Chincoteague, Assateague and restricted Wallops Island.

Northern Virginia Alliance of Camera Clubs (NVACC) The Northern Virginia Alliance of Camera Clubs (NVACC) is an informal entity started in 1997 by Joseph Miller with the assistance of Dave Carter and Ed Funk. Its purpose is to promote communication and cooperation among area camera clubs. NVACC is made up of Member Clubs and Associated Member Clubs. Late November and early December may offer photographers a fairly rare photographic opportunity. Many astronomers are predicting that Comet ISON will be "the Comet of the Century." Recently discovered, this will be the first time this sun-grazing comet has come around the sun. Because it is a sun-grazer, it has the potential of putting on a pretty spectacular visual display. However, this is far from a sure thing. It could fizzle and just be something that only astronomers will see.
