President's Message

March 2013

As I write this in mid-February, we have not had a snow day yet. We did cancel one meeting early in the year due to a storm. I hope that is all the bad weather we'll have this winter. It has been cold; too cold for most of us to get out and shoot. But spring is coming. In March, we start to see some signs of spring closer to home, or I go and find spring indoors. In mid-march-the blue poppies bloom in the conservatory at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA. If you like to photograph flowers these are worth the trip--and even if this is outside your comfort zone, it is worth the trip. Next month, April, we can enjoy spring close to home!

The year is more than half over, and we owe thanks to the many volunteers and especially the board members who have conscientiously devoted their time, talents and energy to making all of the club's programs exciting and educational. We have had great competition judges, some amazingly interesting program speakers, educational programs, critiquers, field trips, galleries and even coffee, tea and cookies. And if our Operations group had been running it, the power would have stayed on at the Super Bowl, and we'd have been entertained with video highlights of all the past Super Bowl games.

The nominating committee has been appointed and will announce the slate of officers for the 2013-2014 club year at the second meeting in March in accordance with the club by-laws. Additional nominations may be made in writing to the chairman of the nominating committee, Bob Friedman by the April meeting.

I am also asking for nominations for the Joe Atchison Award For Outstanding Service to NVPS. The criteria for this award include at least 12 years of active service including positions critical to the fulfillment of the NVPS mission. (These include President, Vice President - Competition, Vice President - Programs, Workshop and Field Trip chairs. These are particularly critical because of their educational nature). These nominations close on March 31.

The date for the End of Year Banquet has been set--it will be the first Friday in June, June 7 at the Best Western in Tysons Corner. This is the same place it has been the last several years. Plan on being there for a truly enjoyable evening.

It is still not too late to see the photo exhibit Faking It at the National Gallery. It will be there until May 5. http://www.nga.gov/exhibitions/faking.shtm

Scott Musson is a photographer, lecturer and frequently critiques, speaks and judges at photography organizations and clubs in the Northern Virginia and Washington DC metropolitan area. A Photographer of the Year for the Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS), Scott has published a photo calendar with his wife, Emi for the past ten years.

“Photography is a natural extension of my love for travel”, says Scott. “While I’ve taken pictures all my life, it wasn’t until I was older and could afford to travel that my passion for photography truly developed. I love the whole process of photography: planning a shoot, getting up early to catch the light, processing the images (nowadays digitally), and printing and matting.”

Scott has a passion for photography in and around water. He has been capturing images while snorkeling for a number of years. “I would snorkel everyday if I could,” Scott says, and tries to makes several excursions a year to the tropics to enjoy this aspect of photography. Additionally Scott enjoys architectural and black light photography.

Scott just received a special merit award at the prestigious Annual Joe Miller Abstract Exhibit. He recently judged the Huntley Meadows Annual Competition, performed an anonymous critique at NVPS, and was the end of year judge for the North Bethesda Camera Club. Additionally he recently appeared on Aim Behind the Lens on Arlington Cable Access. The episode is available on Youtube.com.

Scott and his wife Emi have had a number of photographs used in the sets of major motion pictures. Scott’s photo “Lightning Steve” was a prominent backdrop in the motion picture “Wonderful World” starring Matthew Broderick.

Scott is a past president of NVPS and has served on its board for several years. He has been Vice President of Competition and of Programs for that organization and for the past several years has been the website manager. He has received the NVPS “Versatile Photographer of the Year” award and the “Advanced Photographer of the Year” award for Prints and Digital Projected Images. Scott blogs about photography and posts images at his website at www.scottmusson.com, please stop by for a visit any time!

“Every day we walk by beauty and wonder in this world, but often we fail to recognize it. My love of photography has brought me new vision and new appreciation for the common, ordinary and familiar objects in our world. As we commute to work, or go about our daily business we only need to use the lens of our imagination and appreciation of light to see beauty in the world. Learning to see is a journey, not a destination. Each day we can expand our vision by opening our mind and looking at our world in new an interesting ways.” For more about Scott, see his website:

March 26th: Wayne Wolfersberger — Nature Photography in Your Own Backyard

Wayne Wolfersberger will concentrate on what one can shoot around the house and yard, and show images of set ups as well as the resulting images shots that were made. He will show what can be done in the house, from a patio birdfeeder, and in a backyard. Wayne will share simple techniques to attract birds and other wildlife for photography as well as favorite plants, such as native wildflowers and ferns to photograph. He will demonstrate using some tools and props used to enhance the photographic process. He will also bring a few modified aquaria used to help with natural settings for many of his close up or macro shots. The largest critters he has photographed in his back yard has been occasional deer, but most often he photographs birds, insects, flowers and other vegetation. The smallest things were aphids using a 50mm lens with a reversing ring which he will bring that as part of the demonstration.

Wayne Wolfersberger has been interested in photographing wildlife since childhood. He said he and fell in love with the natural world but back then the camera was secondary. Wayne was mainly interested in reptiles and amphibians in my very early teens and initially wanted to be a herpetologist. He did a lot of bird watching as well. He always took the family Kodak Brownie Hawkeye when we would go on family trips and always urged my parents to take side trips to various nature type places near to the Disneyland or beach resorts etc. so he could photograph the wildlife. Wayne says he has lots of pathetic pictures of animal life from these trips. "One thing that impacted me the most was when my family made a trip during my high school years to the West. We traveled to many of the national parks but my favorite was Yellowstone. I wanted to return."

Wayne received a BS from the U of MD in Conservation and Resource Management took a job in Yellowstone between his Sophomore and Junior years. His job was washing dishes in the local cafeteria, but he hiked a lot, partied a lot and started taking pictures of wildlife. He bought his first SLR camera - a Kodak Retina Reflex III, replacing it later with the first SLR Nikon, the F1. This was when he started getting serious about photography, reading some books on wildlife photography, working for a commercial photographer and taking a lot of pictures during class field trips to nature preserves for ecological studies.

He worked for the US Fish and Wildlife Service as a research biologist at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Laurel Maryland. Later, he joined the Navy (during the Vietnam War) and ended up working at the US Navy Photo Lab in DC. After leaving the Navy, he taught biology and used the camera in the class room and on many of the ecology field trips but mainly took pictures of kids in the field working. Through the years, he did weddings, school shots and craft fairs. He joined NVPS in the l980's and gained a lot of valuable experiences by participating in evening activities and field trips and serving in various board roles, including President.

Before, during and after retiring from the teaching field (Fairfax County Public Schools 30 years and VT for eight years part time) he has had images used on local and national calendars, post cards and magazines as well as having had gallery shows both solo and with others. Since retiring, he has been teaching photography courses through FCPS and as of this fall, with FCPA. He says this challenges himself to try new techniques and keep abreast of all the new stuff that keeps coming out in the photo world. In addition to the basic and advanced classes, he also does private lessons. (See his listing in he workshop section for more information.)

March 26th: Prints — Yulan Guo — Favorites

Yulan Guo attributes her interest in photography to her father, who she thought was the family photographer.  At a young age, she went with him to the “darkroom” at his office and saw him developing images.  She was fascinated to see her face appearing from chemicals. When she was eight years old, she received a German made “toy camera” from her aunt.  She had a lot of fun playing with it and taking many snapshots of her sister and friends during the years of growing up.  She learned darkroom film and photo processing at her middle school photo lab.

In 1986, Yulan left China to pursue graduate studies at George Washington University in the United States and continued with film photography. In 2002, she got her first digital camera and she used it to capture local business images for a website company. She also used it when leading travel groups to China and Japan.  In July 2007, Yulan bought her first DSLR camera, a Nikon D80,  followed by a D700 in 2010, and a D800 in 2012 as her photography passion grew.

Yulan connects with nature photography, loves people and travel photography, and fine art photography.  She joined both NVPS and the Loudoun Photo Club in September 2008 and has been a member of both clubs since.  Photography has "enriched her life and enlarged her circle of friends." Yulan appreciates this gift and embraces the joy it brings wholeheartedly.

Yulan will be exhibiting prints and portfolios from the past few years.  Some have won club and Nature Visions recognitions, while others are favorites from her field trips, such as the China Photo Tour she co-led with Corey Hilz in 2010.

March 26th: Digital — Kip Holdridge — Nature versus Man-made

Growing up and learning photography in rural Northwest Colorado, Kip Holdrige’s favorite photography subjects are grand landscapes and wildlife. For years he would not take a picture of anything but a mountain or an animal. The move to the Washington, DC, area was tough photographically for Kip, as grand landscapes and wildlife are in much shorter supply. To cope, Kip began branching out and photographing churches, abandoned buildings, and other man-made objects. Although he still considers himself a nature photographer, Kip finds himself spending more and more time exploring abandoned object, still life, and architecture photography.

Kip’s presentation will showcase the two sides of his photography: landscape and wildlife – his favorite subjects to shoot; and abandoned buildings, churches, and still life – his favorite images to process.

Kip Holdridge learned “the basics” of photography at a young age. At 6 years old, his mother taught him the mechanics of using an SLR camera and the rules of composition. After a childhood behind the lens, Kip and photography slowly grew apart as after school activities took up more of his time. After finishing college and starting a career, he found his way back to photography with a little nudging from his mother. He purchased his first DSLR in early 2008 and joined NVPS in the spring of 2009. Kip was the recipient of the NVPS “Photographer of the Year” and “Image of the Year” awards in the Novice Unrestricted Digitally Projected Images category for the 2010-2011 competition year and has since graduated to the advanced class.

Kip’s photography can be seen online at: http://www.flickr.com/krhphotography

Portfolio Project

Thank You Sherwin Kaplan. The preliminary critique for the Portfolio Project was a rousing success thanks to the insightful commentary of Sherwin Kaplan. His comments gave all of us who have started the project welcome guidance to lead us as we complete our projects for this year. With what we now know from Sherwin, it is time to gather more images and/or look critically at what we already have and hone in on those images that best represent our artist statements and our best quality work.

Remember, if you have not done so already, you can still join the project and have your work in the final critique with Roy Sewell on May. You will have through the month of April to work on content. Future postings will be on presentation. Happy shooting!

Notice: Workshop and contest announcements of events not sponsored by or affiliated with NVPS are provided as a courtesy to Members. Members should review the detailed contest rules and conditions to determine what impact entering images has on rights and ownership of the submitted images. Review the descriptions of workshop to whether participation in a workshop would actually meet personal learning goals. NVPS attempts to screen events for legitimacy and quality; however NVPS does not recommend these events and cannot assume responsibility for their ultimate quality. Members' Resources:

Do you need help with a photography problem, but don’t know who to ask? The Members’ Resource Program is here for you. Have you ever been asked “How do you do that?” If so, then consider sharing your knowledge with other club members.

The Members’ Resource area of the club web site http://nvps.org/home/?cat=17 contains a growing set of presentations and ‘how to’ documents created by club members. It contains the Members’ Resource List, which provides the names and email addresses of club members who have volunteered to help club members looking for help on specific technology and technique topics.

Coming this March - A New Image Gallery for the NVPS Website

During the month of March we'll be upgrading the NVPS Website Image gallery to a new version. The change will be significant and will likely take a little getting used too just because it's different, however the interface is significantly simplified and should be easier for people to use and it will look better than the current design.

When the migration is going to occur, there will be a notice that goes out to let people know. The galley will be unavailable for upload or editing approximately one day as the data migration takes time. The gallery will continue to be available for viewing during this time, but changes and additions will not be allowed.

Once the new gallery is available, we'll send out some simple instructions for using the new gallery.

Existing users who are current members will have to do nothing, your account, rights and images will be migrated for you. Users who are not current members will not be migrated to the new system and if they rejoin the club they will need to create a new user id.

If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us at nvpsimagegallery@nvps.org

Editor's Note

Everything that happens in this club happens because a member was willing to volunteer his or her time to make it happen. Plain and simple, things just do not happen unless we have volunteers. NVPS only operates through the willingness of a few members to donate a few hours each month. Our volunteer roles vary in their time/work requirements. It helps to have more than one volunteer in some areas. Bob Friedman is chairing this year's nominations committee. Let Bob know if you are willing to invest a few hours each month to help keep NVPS the best photo club in Northern Virginia.

Comments, requests and submissions are solicited and welcomed. They should be sent to editor@nvps.org or given to me at a regular meeting. I test each issue of the newsletter using Internet Explorer, Safari and Google Chrome to ensure the layout and embedded links work correctly. If you encounter a problem reading FotoFax on your system, please let me know.
