Mike’s articles and images have been published in major photo magazines. He has written several how-to macro and photo business book/ebooks. One of Tamron’s master macro photographers, he was a member of the Fuji Pro Talent Team. October 18th Competition - Judge Charles Neenan
The Theme is "Simplicity"
Tom Burden and Melanie Marts, co-VP's of Competition, are pleased to host Charles Neenan as competition judge. The theme for this month is “Simplicity”. No guidelines will be given. It will be up to the photographer and our judge to determine if the image fits the theme. Please upload your digital images by the deadline, as per the current instructions on the club website. Prints should be signed in by 7:15, so our judge can preview them. You must be a paid member to compete. You are invited to join Charles for dinner at Chili's Restaurant, at 5:30 p.m. on the 18th.
A professional portrait and event photographer, Charles Neenan is also a mixed media artist. He combines photography and digital painting to create his line of Art for the 21st Century™. Like artists who use oil, pen, acrylic, and other more “traditional” art media to tell stories, his artworks are created with the computer screen as canvas, and hi-res digital cameras, lenses, and graphics software as brushes. October 25 Forum - Joe Miller - Visual Communication
Joe Miller is a prolific writer and frequent speaker and judge for most of the camera clubs in the Northern Virginia area. He has authored or co-authored no less than twelve of the NVACC handbooks on photography, teaches workshops relating to photographic techniques and has trained numerous judges in the area. He is a mentor for many of us in the club and has taught us to appreciate the 4 C's of Visual Communication: Craftsmanship, Composition, Creativity and Communication.
A member of the Northern Virginia Photographic Society, Joe has judged
competitions throughout our region including the
annual Meadowlark Exhibit on Nature Photography
as well as serving as Year End Judge for our own
club. In addition, Joe has authored articles for the

Gallery Digital - Bob and Willa Friedman
As a teenager, Bob Friedman had a darkroom in the basement of his house. No color in those days, but Bob "photoshoped" his images in the darkroom just like Ansel Adams. Bob says "Ansel did a much better job." When he and Willa bought their house, the first thing he did was build a darkroom. Then the kids came and photography took a back seat. After retiring, Bob started back up with photography. He joined the Northern Virginia Photographic Society to enhance his skills and took workshops with Freeman Patterson, Andre Gallant, Adam Jones, Corey Hilz, and Photoshop classes with Eliot Cohen.
Willa Friedman discovered photography right after college when she was an instructor at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. She was given a choice of several summer projects including cleaning small animal cages, filing old forms or sorting owl pellets. One choice was photographing wildlife in city parks. She chose the photography because her new husband knew about such things. Willa was handed an SLR camera and light meter. Over the following weekend, "Bob taught me enough that the result was published!"
For about forty years, she did nothing photographic—"I raised children and worked in management and sales." As she approached retirement, she drifted back into photography and took several workshops, including one with Freeman Patterson and Andre Gallant and studied Photoshop with Eliot Cohen. Most recently, she took courses at Photoworks with Karen Keating and John Borstel. Willa shoots digitally with Nikon equipment and does her own printing on an Epson 3800 Photographic printer.
Gallery Prints - Bill Prosser
Bill Prosser's gallery features Unseen Extracts-McLean Black and White Digital Photography . The images in this exhibition were made in Northern Virginia, most in the McLean area. Rather than sweeping landscapes, they are "extracts" intended to make you ask: What is this? Where was it taken? "I like to make very graphic images, occasionally with a sense of motion."
Bill Prosser has lived in McLean for 40 years. He has been a serious amateur photographer for over 35 years. Beginning in the early 1970's he studied under a number of Northern Virginia teachers and mentors and more recently Canadian, Freeman Patterson. Between 1995 and 2000 he gave up film and the chemical darkroom for the digital chip and computer after learning Photoshop and working photographic images in his digital darkroom. Also in 1995 he began his current volunteer work at McLean High School where he teaches Photoshop, photography, and mentors students in visual design.
Bill served as a teaching assistant for several Smithsonian Institution Photoshop Classes. He is a founding member, and past-president, of the McLean Photography Club and a 20 year member and board member of the Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS). In recent years he has earned numerous NVPS Photographer-of-the-Year and Image-of-the -Year awards. He has exhibited his photographic images at University of Wisconsin-Madison and several Fairfax County Virginia venues, including the McLean Project for the Arts. Georgetown University purchased several of his Washington, DC images to hang in its Graduate Public Policy Institute offices. His work has been published in the National Geographic Traveler Magazine

| NVPS Portfolio Project |
The Portfolio Project is a nine month project starting in September and running through May 2012. All club members of all skill levels are encouraged to participate in this project. A Portfolio may include some images already taken, but primarily new images taken over the program year.
The goal of the portfolio project is to conceive a theme, craft an artist statement, capture the images and the present them as a portfolio. This article is devoted to encouraging members who may be interested in participating this program year to start thinking about portfolio topics, possibly several, and to start shooting this summer.
Your goal is to create a portfolio of your best images, primarily collected from June 2011 to May 2012, that exemplify the objectives of your theme and Artist's Statement. These should be images you would be proud to share with others for years to come.
The beginning stages of the project entail picking a theme or concept and writing an Artist's Statement. In the "Artist's Statement" the photographer explains what he or she is trying to accomplish with the project. (See http://nvps.org/main/meetings/portfolio/nvps_portfolio_project_artists/ for more details about what should and should not be in an Artist's Statement.)
In the beginning stages of determining a theme, some members have worked on several themes at the same time. As time passed and their images piled up, they began to become more comfortable with one subject over others. You too may follow this model in your project. It is helpful to write an Artist Statement for all potential portfolio themes.

2011 Nature Visions Expo
November 11-13
This year's Expo will be held November 11-13 at the Hylton Performing Arts Center on the Prince William Campus, George Mason University, Manassas, VA.
The Expo will kick off on Friday, November 11, with a full-day seminar presented by world renowned nature photographer, Art Wolfe. The subject of the seminar is "The Art of Composition." The price for this seven hour seminar is only $195 and seating is limited. If you register in advance for the Nature Visions Expo for either Saturday and or Sunday admission you will receive a coupon code upon checkout which will give you access to a 15% discount on this seminar which will drop the price to $165.75. Art will also be the Expo's keynote speaker at 4:00pm on Saturday afternoon. The submission deadline for prints is October 18. Prints may be submitted at regular club meetings through the October 11 meeting. Between October 12 and October 18 you may make arrangements with John Quigley (jhquigley "at" msn.com) to submit your prints to him. October 18 is the deadline and no images will be accepted beyond that date and only October 18 competition images will be accepted at the meeting on the 18th. Judging will be held at the Reston Community Center on Sunday, October 23. All photographs will be judged in one of the categories below.
Photographs will compete with photographs within the category from all clubs. Accordingly, you will not be competing within the club for a juried entry but against members from other clubs with photographs in the category. The total number of juried images will be limited to 300. There are no club minimums or club quotas; however, there are individual limits. Entries may be split among clubs, but the total number of entries per member may not exceed 10. There is no limit to the number of images an individual may enter in a category. The first six images are free. There will be a $20.00 fee if you wish to enter up to an additional 4. This is a flat fee, not $5.00 per image. All participants are expected to volunteer at the Expo.
First, second and third place "Best in Show" awards will be given. The categories are:
Birds
Wildlife other than Birds
Pond Life
Water/ Waterfalls
Landscapes/Seascapes/Skyscapes
Macro/Close-ups/Abstracts
Flora other than Macro
Signatures are NOT allowed prior to the judging. If the photographer wishes to add a signature it may be done after the image has been juried into the Expo and before it is displayed in the exhibit.
The cover window mat must be securely affixed on all four sides to a firm backing of at least 3/8 inch foam core. Failure to comply may result in the disqualification of the image for consideration
We have revised the wording of hand of man. Titles are NOT allowed on the cover window mat or the print (refer to Labels for use of titles).

Volunteers
It is expected that entrants regardless of whether they have an image juried into the Expo will volunteer during the Expo. A list of volunteer tasks is being prepared now and will be available shortly. Typically, assignments are of a two-hour duration. Volunteers will be given an opportunity to designate a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice. To the extent possible first choice will be granted.

Meadowlark Juried Exhibition of Nature Photography
Capturing Nature in Photographs - November 5 - 30
Meadowlark Botanical Gardens is having a Juried Exhibition of Nature Photography, entitled “Capturing Nature in Photographs” as part of their participation in FotoWeekDC 2011. Photographs must have been taken within the past year. The exhibition will run from November 5th to November 30th.
Submissions will be accepted between October 1st and October 15th at Meadowlark, during Meadowlark’s regular hours (10 am to 5 pm.) The submission fee is $15 for the first two prints, then $5 for each additional print. Limit 5 entries per person in each category; a maximum of 10 entries may be accepted from an individual photographer if there are 5 images in each category. The categories are 1. Meadowlark and 2. Other Locations.

Photo Op: Loudoun County Farm Color Tour
October 15th - 16th
I visited Aryshire Farm during the Loudoun Country Farm Tour this past spring and it was a great opportunity to photograph a high end working farm. They have beautiful draft horses, carriages, impressive barn interiors, tack rooms, various farm animals, gardens, tractors, and more. I've visited a number of the other farms during various times and it can be fun as well as a great photo op. Some of these farms are only open twice a year during the farm tour so take advantage of this photo op!

On Saturday, October 1 and Sunday, October 2, the whole world will be walking again with Scott Kelby, president of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP) and #1 bestselling computer and technology book author, in his Fourth Annual Worldwide Photo Walk™ — the world’s largest global social photography event in the history of photography.

Nikhil Bahl is a professional nature photographer, educator, author, lecturer and workshop instructor. The first presentation will be a Friday evening program November 4, entitled: “The Call of Creativity.” The second will be an all-day seminar on Saturday, November 5, entitled: “Seeing and Visual Design.”
Mr. Patterson last addressed members of the Greater Washington photographic community in March 2002, when he presented an all-day seminar at the International Monetary Fund Auditorium hosted by the International Photographic Society.
Notes on the Friday evening, November 4, program: "The Call of Creativity" - Time: 8:00 pm - 10:30 pm. This is a presentation for everybody and not limited to just photographers. It should be equally promoted to other visual and performing artists, educators, university and high-school students, designers of every sort, spiritual care workers, and everybody interested in a visually and intellectually stimulating evening. During the two and a half hours (including an intermission), Freeman will combine talking, projected images and music to examine the sources and nature of creativity, essential facts about creativity and ways of accessing the creativity that we all possess. Freeman has given this program to large groups of photographers, university students and as a keynote address to national conferences of university educators across Canada, in South Africa and New Zealand, and will be presenting it in Israel in December. This will be his first presentation of the program in the United States. Registration fee: $30.00
Notes on the Saturday November 5, all-day seminar: “Seeing and Visual Design”. Time: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. Freeman’s “Seeing and Visual Design” seminar has evolved over the years. (Because the growing process just never ends, there will always be new ways of looking at and discussing visual design). Basic content: This seminar is about seeing and visual design. Visual design is the craft of visual expression and communication. During the morning, Freeman will be speaking about and illustrating (with projected images) the building blocks of visual design and, during the afternoon, principles for arranging them in picture space (composition). He will not be talking about the hardware and software of film or digital photography, except in passing. Registration fee: $75.00

Northern Virginia Alliance of Camera Clubs (NVACC)
The Northern Virginia Alliance of Camera Clubs
(NVACC) is an informal entity started in 1997 by Joseph
Miller with the assistance of Dave Carter and Ed Funk.
Its purpose is to promote communication and cooperation
among area camera clubs. NVACC is made up of Member
Clubs and Associated Member Clubs.
NVACC publishes a monthly Calendar of Virginia
Member Club Events that can be found at www.nvacc.org/Calendar.html.
NVACC has published a Field Trips Guide Book
for Photographers, which provides information about nearby areas that camera clubs might wish to visit (www.nvacc.org/Field%20trips%20Guidebook/NVACCPublications.html).

If you would like to submit information to be published in Fotofax or on the NVPS Website, the following information may be helpful. We only publish information that is related to photography and we do not accept advertising as this would be contrary to the mission of NVPS. We do accept brief want ads by members for photography related items. Our membership is from the Northern Virginia and Washington DC metropolitan area and we focus on items of local interest.

The Fotofax newsletter is usually finalized during the weekend immediately following the monthly club competitions so we can send it out on the day of the fourth monthly meeting. To be included, please send your material no later than the Friday evening following the monthly photo competition. (Earlier is better!)
If we receive meaningful updates or error corrections, I will make those updates in the version of FotoFax saved on-line on the website, but will not redistribute via email unless it is a truly impactful update.
