Spring has arrived and I can’t wait to see all of nature’s wonders waking from their winter rest.

We have had a very busy March at NVPS.

• Congratulations to the 10 members whose images were selected to represent NVPS at the upcoming Glennie competition. Thank you to all the members that sent images in. Lots of appreciation goes to John Quigley for putting this all together for us again. Good luck NVPS!!!

• Thank you Scott Musson, Bill Prosser and Paul Simmons for leading NVPS members through the Portfolio Project. We were treated to 20 of our member’s draft portfolios being critiqued by Jim Steele on March 8th. I for one cannot wait to see everyone’s final projects.

• The NVPS Board met on March 8th to vote on recommendations from the Competition Rules Committee (set up on February 8th); approve language for Competition VP guidance regarding members as judges; and to vote on recommendations for new gifts for speakers and judges (committee was set up over the summer). Thank you to all the folks serving on these 3 committees as well as the NVPS board for its dedication in meeting 2 months in a row after a club meeting and staying late.

• Tom Brett – former President announced the elected slate of officers for 2011-2012. There will be a separate article or info on the web for additional nominations. The membership will vote on the slate during the first meeting in May (May 3). The nominees are listed in the election article below.

Time is running out to enter the First Annual NVACC Juried Abstract Photography Exhibition at the Joseph Miller Center for the Photographic Arts. All entries are due no later than April 2nd. Please see www.nvacc.org for more details as well as other articles in Fotofax and on the website.

The rules committee will present the board’s proposed rules changes at the program meeting in April (April 5th) and allow a few minutes of Q & A. Please plan on being there to hear about the proposed changes that the membership will be voting on at the first meeting in May (May 3).

The NVPS Constitution and By-Laws require the appointment of a Nominating Committee to prepare a roster of proposed officers, in support of the required annual election. Nominees must agree to serve, if elected. The list of nominees is below and was announced, as required, at the second club meeting in March.

NVPS members may submit additional nominations by the second club meeting in April, in writing, to the Nominating Committee. Nominations from members must be seconded by any club member, other than the candidate. The candidate must confirm in writing his/ her willingness to accept the nomination and serve, if elected. The NVPS election will be at the first club meeting in May. It will be by voice vote, if there are no additional nominations, or, by written vote, if added nominations have been made.

The nominating committee members are Sandi Croan, Sam Schaen & Tom Brett.

Biography

Ian Plant has been photographing our natural world for over fifteen years. His photographs and instructional articles have appeared in a number of books, calendars, and magazines, including Outdoor Photographer, Popular Photography, Nature Photographers Online Magazine, National Parks, Common Ground, Blue Ridge Country, Adirondack Lif, Wonderful West Virginia, and Chesapeake Life, among others. Ian is also a Contributing Editor toNature Photographers Online Magazine, and writes a regular blog column for Outdoor Photographer online. Ian is the photographer/author of eight print books, including Chesapeake: Bay of Light (2007), which received critical acclaim from the Washington Post, Washington Times and Baltimore Sun, among others. The Washington Times said "Plant's sensational lens work . . . is a smash hit."

Ian is also one of the lead authors and designer of The Ultimate Guide to Digital Nature Photography (2009). Most recently, Ian has authored a number of nature photography instructional eBooks.

Critique for Themed Competition: Old

In preparation for the Themed April Competition “Old,” we will be having an image critique on April 12th. Our critics, from the club's NVACC trained judges, will include Tom Brett, Sandi Croan and Steve Passman. Critiques are an opportunity for club members to get a more detailed explanation of what is most effective about their work, and where it could be improved in the eyes of the critics. As always, we will attempt to accommodate as many images as possible.

Sandi Croan is an independent artist from Centreville who has been living in Northern Virginia since 1978. She specializes in landscape, nature, and travel photography with an eye for capturing the unique and creating fine art for homes and offices.

Sandi has won numerous competitions and awards for her fine art photographs. In 2008, she was awarded Photographer of the Year and Print of the Year by the Northern Virginia Photographic Society and she won both Best in Show and 2nd Place at the juried Meadowlark Photo Expo in Vienna, VA. Her images have been selected to be put on permanent display at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens and the Joseph Miller Center for the Photographic Arts. She has been juried into numerous art shows including; the prestigious VisArts of Rockville Exhibitions, Fairfax County Council of the Arts Show, and The Fraser Gallery International Photography Exhibition. Sandi was a featured artist in Elan Magazine, and her photograph Blue Lagoon was on the cover. She has also had photographs published in other local and national magazines.

Sandi has sold many of her photographs to private, corporate and government clients, and does shows for businesses and other local events. In addition, Sandi has recently/or currently is displaying her art at Broadway Gallery in The Promenade shopping center in Fairfax, VA, The Blue Iguana restaurant in Fairfax, Meadowlark Gardens, Cub Run Recreation Center, Trummers on Main Street Restaurant, and the Fairfax County Government Center.

In addition to her fine art photography, Sandi is an outdoor portrait photographer specializing in children at play in natural settings and portfolio/marketing photos for models, actors and teen pageant competitors. She captures the essence, personality and beauty of all of her clients.

Sandi has been an active member of the Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS) since 2004 and has served in a variety of board positions. She is currently serving in her second year as President of NVPS (2009-2011). She also is a speaker and serves as a judge for area photographic clubs, competitions and exhibitions.

Events Coming Up

May 7th, 2011 – Field trip to Huntley Meadows Park, which contains the best wildlife watching in the Washington metropolitan area. The arrival time for the park is 6:00 am, however, if you wish to arrive later, we will be easy to find on the boardwalk (the Heron Trail) throughout the morning

May 10 or 11, 2011 - Chuck Veatch’s Tour of Nature’s Best Exhibit at the Smithsonian. Two groups will be limited to 24 people each. Details will follow.

May 11 – 27 – Joe Miller’s Abstract Photography Exhibition at The Joseph Miller Center for the Photographic Arts. A group event for our club will be held during that time. Details will follow.

June 18 – 19 – Big Meadows, located between mile 51 and 52 in Shenandoah National Park. Although the fawns will be the main focus, there are many other places to explore and photograph in the park. Shenandoah is filled with great overlooks, waterfalls and miles of trails. Because there is a cancellation fee, I would like people to make their own reservations with the address provided below. The rates are $124.80, $146.60 and $186.93. Check-in time is 3:00. Please remember that Big Meadows also provides a camp ground.

Abstracts and Extracts
Nikhil Bahl

This forum was originally to be given in February, but was postponed due to weather. Thankfully, Nikhil had the flexibility to reschedule to April and hopefully, there will be no blizard or ice storm.

A photographer makes many decisions that interpret the subject. The subject can be presented in an atypical manner that may challenge our perceptions. Alternatively, when the photographer delves into the abstract, the viewer can be left guessing as to what the subject really is. In his presentation, Nikhil will take you into the realm of abstracts and extracts to create unique images using in-camera techniques and artistic interpretation. Biography

Nikhil Bahl is a professional nature photographer, educator, author, lecturer and workshop instructor. He currently resides in Montgomery Village, Maryland. His goal is to inspire people to appreciate the splendor of nature by becoming aware of that which is easily overlooked, and by transforming the mundane into the exciting through contemplative and artistic interpretation. While his primary aim is to create art with his photographs, he also strives to document the natural world with an eye toward conservation and education. This has led him to volunteer his time and photography skills for the National Park Service and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

Nikhil's work has been published in a variety of print and electronic media. His fine art prints have been widely exhibited in the Washington metropolitan area, and are part of many private collections. Nikhil leads several nature photography workshops and tours, primarily along the East coast of the United States. He also teaches photography at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna, Virginia and through Digital Photo Academy. His instruction is focused on in-camera interpretation and developing personal vision, rather than simply following the traditional rules of photography.

Lorraine Chickering

Lorraine's first camera was a hand-me-down Argus C3. She spent a few youthful years doing photojournalistic black and white photography while she self-learned exposure, composition and dark room printing.

Her wanderlust was first sated when she lived in Europe for eighteen months while in her 20's. Travel photography, specifically archaeological sites, became a hobby served by her first SLR. Late in her career, frequent travel brought much photographic opportunity. Yet, it was usually rushed because of professional commitments and personal responsibilities leaving little time for truly creative capture.

As she wound down from her day job in telecommunications, serious photography became a passion that opened new creative paths and provided a "continuous learning" challenge.

Primarily a travel and architecture photographer, Lorraine has branched out to pursue nature and macro photography as well. She is now working on improving her "montage" skills. And, after doing event photography work, she decided "people" work wasn't rewarding enough. As well, her contract work has been published by the Harvard Museum of Natural History, the Harvard Lampoon and the Center for the Presidency.

She began to show and successfully compete locally after 2000 and entered the Craft Fair business in 2006. Her work has been carried at the Artisans Gallery, Beyond the Garden Gate and the Decatur Museum. And, has been displayed at Le Grand Cafe, Sona Bank, USGS, Meadowlark Botanical Gardens, the Green Mountain Power Corporate offices in Burlington, VT and the Atkinson Gallery in Concord, MA. One of her images was chosen to be part of the NVPS Glennie Portfolio in 2011.

Lorraine has been a member of NVPS since 2007. She credits NVPS and the McLean Photo Club with challenging her to expand her horizons and techniques. Her only regret: "I should have gone digital and joined local Photo Clubs a lot sooner!!"

Currently, she shoots with a Nikon D200 married with a variety of lens: a Nikon 10-24MM wide angle, a Tamron 90MM Macro, and a Nikon 80-400MM. Her go everywhere lens is a Nikon 18-200MM.

Though completely self-taught as a photographer, her post-capture guru has been and is Eliot Cohen.

Lorraine’s 2011 travel plans include: Carnivale in Venice (March) and 2 weeks in India (November). She is looking for a female roommate for an August trip to the Galapagos...interested???

Nancy Dubiell and Bill Vanderpool have been members of NVPS since….well, since the Washington Gas days. Both have been interested in photography for many years and when they married, it was a photographer’s match made in heaven.

Both use Canon equipment. They make one overseas trip a year. In 2010 they spent four weeks in Africa, the subject of this presentation. In addition, they try to make one or two trailer trips somewhere in the states each year. Nancy is an HR expert and although retired from full time work, she still does consulting work. Bill spent 31 years in law enforcement and ten more in law enforcement sales. He now writes occasional magazine articles.

Little known facts? Nancy lived in Afghanistan for three years and got out just before the Russians invaded. And Bill was a working cowboy, in New Mexico and Arizona, before returning to his home state of Florida. They both enjoy nature photography and Bill loves to take portraits of people during their travels. They print most of their own images, using Photoshop 8.0 for minimal adjustments and an Epson 1400 for printing. Their next big trip is to the Amazon and Galapagos Islands in July 2011.

George W. Glennie Nature Competition

This is a premier, international all-nature club competition of digital images sponsored by the Merrimack Valley Camera Club of Andover, Massachusetts. The competition is known for its diversity of subjects which range from animals to botany to landscapes. The competition draws entries from more than 200 camera clubs from around the world. This year 32 NVPS members submitted 86 images for this year's club competition. The 10 winning image and photographers are:

Meet Your Board Members

As part of a continuing series on our board members, we continue with the biography for two "Tom B's": Tom Burden and Tom Brett.

Tom Burden Forum Coordinator Originally from Springfield, Massachusetts, Tom is a professional healthcare executive and retired naval officer now residing in Lorton, Virginia. He is married with two daughters and three grandchildren. Since retiring from the Navy after 23 years in Navy medicine, he has developed and managed a wide variety of outsourced and privatized health care services for government and commercial organizations throughout the United States as well as in Germany, Italy, and Korea. Recently, Tom joined a new company, Innovative Logistics Technologies, Inc. where he is currently leading the launch of a new healthcare division.

He holds both an undergraduate and graduate degree in healthcare management and is board certified in healthcare administration.

Tom is also a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, and has held faculty appointments at Wayland Baptist University and Baylor University. In addition to his professional activities, he has a passion for my family and grandkids, photography, international travel, the Washington Nationals, and spending down time at his vacation home in Bethany Beach, DE.

Tom joined NVPS in 2009 after purchasing his first DLSR. "I am basically a self-taught hobbyist", says Tom, who started using a Yashica 35mm film camera in 1972.

Tom currently works with a Nikon D90 as his main camera. When traveling or just in need of a one-lens solution, he often reaches for his AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II. When in need of a standard prime lens, he really likes the AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G, or for a slightly longer reach, the AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D. Recently, Tom added a set of Nikon’s constant f2.8 lenses which he is still getting to know:

• AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED
• AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED
• AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED

For macro work, Tom is just starting to use the AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED. Since it allows him to shoot in RAW format, he uses the Nikon P6000 as his pocket camera when the D90 is just more than he wants to carry.

As a longtime Apple user, Tom uses Aperture 3 as his principal photography application. He also uses the Nik Software Plug-in Suite, and has just upgraded to Photoshop CS5. He prints using an Epson R1900.

Tom says, "I am excited to be an NVPS member, and am deeply grateful to the many skilled members who have willingly shared their knowledge and experience."

Tom Brett Past President Tom grew up in Military families and has lived in 12 US states [on 22 occasions]. Photography has been a strong hobby for Tom since about age 23. But, it did not fit well with his life's career, as a US Army Combat Arms [Infantry] Officer for 30 1/2 years, with 7 overseas assignments, including 3 combat tours. His Army career highlights included: Infantry Company (120 men) command in combat at age 26, Command of a Mechanized Infantry Battalion (750 men) in Germany Command of an Airborne Brigade (2,000 soldiers)

• Taught at West Point
• Was a high-level Inspector General in Europe,
• Has made 140 military parachute jumps and is rated a Master Parachutist and Ranger

Tom was awarded The Combat Infantryman Badge, along with other decorations, including the Purple Heart and other higher combat decorations.

Photography was only practical during off-duty time. Tom's formal education includes a BA from The Citadel and an MA in Psychology.

Upon retirement from the Army, Tom's choice for a second career was photography. To learn the craft, he took every photography course at Northern Virginia Community College and earned 2 Associate Degrees in the process–one in Studio Photography and the other in General Photography; graduating Summa Cum Laude in both. Tom took every class that Joe Miller has offered at the Joseph Miller Center for the Photographic Arts. He also attended a Freeman Patterson workshop in Africa, where he took an extra week after the workshop to go on safari and photograph some of Africa's big game.

Tom's photography includes having worked for 4 years as a darkroom color printer for an architectural photographer, doing architectural photography and photographing US Congressional hearings.

His personal photography business covers weddings, Military formal ball "prom shots" and event photography.

Tom has been an NVPS member for 11 1/2 years and a Board member for 11 straight years

Nikon is his camera choice; his favorite lenses are: 24-70mm, F 2.8; 200 mm macro, F4; and 80-200mm, F 2.8.

Says Tom, "The important aspects of NVPS for me are to know fellow photographers and help others learn the joys & skills of photography." His travels have taken him to 57 countries around the world, with Namibia & Kenya being his favorites, because of the photography.

Tom has served on the NVPS board for the last eleven years beginning one year after joining NVPS.He is currently Past-President. His substantial contributions to NVPS over the years resulted in an NVPS Distinguished Service Award last year. He adds, "It has been my pleasure to have served the NVPS members."

The purpose of the exhibition is to present the achievement on photography in these years around the world, and bring in forth the talents of photographers on photography in different themes, styles and schools, in order to promote the exchange of photographic art among the countries in the world. There are two categories: Color and Monochrome. Only digital files are accepted. The entry fee is $15 - $20 depending on the number of categories, with up to 4 submissions per category. Unseen Extracts--McLean, VA
April 14 - June 4

April 14 to June 4, the McLean Project for the Arts (MPA) will host an exhibition of black and white digital prints by Bill Prosser, titled: Unseen Extracts--McLean, VA. There will be a free reception April 14, 7-9 PM to launch the showing of Bill's and two other artists' works. MPA is located in the McLean Community Center at 1234 Ingleside Avenue, McLean. Frank Van Riper

Frank Van Riper, along with his wife, Judy Goodman offer workshops in Lubec Maine and Umbria Italy. The internationally acclaimed husband and wife team will share their image-making techniques with a small group of participants. Wayne Wolfersburger

Wayne Wolfersberger (NVPS member and past President) will be teaching many classes for his thirteenth year with Fairfax County’s Adult and Community Education - ACE. Anyone can sign up (Fairfax residency not required). Courses are designed for beginners, intermediate and advanced skills in photography which includes Outdoor (Nature) classes, flower and garden classes, as well as well as classroom table top shooting for composition and creativity. Roy Sewall

One-on-one Coaching: This coaching is intended for novice and intermediate photographers. Coaching sessions are tailored to an individual's specific needs, and the scope is flexible. Representative topics are: how to operate a digital SLR, equipment selection, photo critique in a private setting, on-computer demonstration of photo improvements, and field technique. Roy judged an NVPS competition in October 2009 and presented a program in November 2010.

Nikhil Bahl Photography Workshops

Nikhil Bahl is a professional nature photographer, educator, author, lecturer and workshop instructor. Nikhil leads several nature photography workshops and tours, primarily along the East coast of the United States. He also teaches photography locally at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna, Virginia and through Digital Photo Academy. His instruction is focused on in-camera interpretation and developing personal vision, rather than simply following the traditional rules of photography.

Awake the Light Photo Tours and Workshops
Mollie Isaacs and Mary Lindhjem

Join two well-known professional photographers on their exciting and educational photo tours. For 2011 they are offering trips to Alaska's Denali National Park and Katmai National Park, Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks, Antelope Canyon and Monument Valley in Arizona, the Great Smoky Mountains, and Acadia National Park in Maine. All tours include extensive photographic opportunities in the field, as well as personal one-on-one assistance and classroom instruction. Mollie and Mary gave NVPS Programs in October 2009 and October 2010.

Northern Virginia Alliance of Camera Clubs (NVACC)

The Northern Virginia Alliance of Camera Clubs (NVACC) is an informal entity started in 1997 by Joseph Miller with the assistance of Dave Carter and Ed Funk. It purpose is to promote communication and cooperation among area camera clubs. NVACC is made up of Member Clubs and Associated Member Clubs.

NVACC publishes a monthly Calendar of Virginia Member Club Events that can be found at www.nvacc.org/Calendar.html.
