President's Message

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and will have a healthy, happy and photographically excellent 2011.  As I write this, I am packing to head off to San Francisco to visit with our kids and spend a few days in Mendocino, CA.  In addition to being with the kids, I am looking forward to getting some new favorite images as well as getting through my stack of photography magazines.

As we head into the New Year, it is always a time for reflection and resolutions. Here are some of my reflections and resolutions regarding NVPS:

Reflections - I have: learned so much about life and leadership in the past year and a half; gained confidence; made many new friends; learned more about photography from the wonderful speakers, workshops, field trips, competitions, members' gallery/forum and members; been inspired and amazed by the high level of volunteerism and commitment of our club members; been impressed with your photography; and looked forward to seeing you all every single week.

Resolutions – I will try to:  learn all your names; bring cookies more often; think of new ways to announce the fire exits; listen to your needs and suggestions; create volunteer opportunities for those that want to become more involved; remember to thank those that volunteer; continue to work with our board and members to enhance the NVPS experience for each one of you; and to leave NVPS an even better club than it was when I became President in May, 2009.

I am already starting to think about the 2011-2012 NVPS year. We will be starting to put a slate together for the new board and other volunteer positions. A healthy organization depends on a combination of experienced and new members in these positions. Please talk to me about the ways in which you might want to be involved next year. It is not too early to start thinking about this.

A few winter reminders:

We are in the midst of cold and flu season. Please, if you are not feeling well or even think that you might be coming down with something – STAY HOME so as not to spread the misery!

Winter weather is definitely upon us. Please check the website and Fotofax for the club’s policy on weather closings. Check WTOP www.wtop.com or Fairfax County School systems web site for closings. You can also sign up for emails or cell phone alerts http://www.fcps.edu/news/emerg.htm

I would like to wish you all a healthy, happy and safe holiday season and a wonderful New Year. And of course, make many beautiful images and memories.

Thank you for a inspiring me and helping me grow.
Happy Holidays!

Monthly Program

Winning Images
Chuck Veatch
Tuesday, January 4, 7:30 PM

We’ll be starting the New Year with a bang; a program by a longtime friend of NVPS, Chuck Veatch, who will be speaking about the Nature's Best Photography Windland Smith Rice International Photography Contest and the winning images.  Many of the images shown will be in the exhibition at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History which opens in April.  Chuck will discuss how the judging process works and demonstrate some creative ways to present images.

One of our region's top photographers, Chuck Veatch was former member of the Northern Virginia Photographic Society, and judged our 2008-2009 Year-End Competition. Chuck has attended workshops with Freeman Patterson and the Rocky Mountain School of Photography. He has won many awards, exhibited throughout the area, and published a book of beautiful images shot in and around Reston, Virginia. Now in its second printing, The Nature of Reston encourages us to look for photographic opportunities in the familiar and often overlooked natural areas all around us.

Chuck has given presentations and judged contests at the North American Nature Photography Association's National Convention, the New England Council of Camera Clubs, the Meadowlark Photo Exposition, and Washington-area camera clubs. He is involved in all aspects of Nature's Best magazine and Nature's Best photography contests, including photo selection and editing for the exhibits at The Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.

With regard to his personal artistic statement, Chuck wrote: "Two ideas dominate my image making and judging. First, simple is better. That means that any element in an image that does not add to the message the artist wishes to convey, subtracts from it. Second, images should be created using the rules of visual design. This means that the subject matter is often subordinate to the use of line, shape, color, texture, tone and perspective to capture the essence of the artist's vision. Photography is art and should be judged that way."

Involvement with non-profit and environmental organizations in Northern Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley occupies much of Chuck's and his wife Beverly's time. Although he still maintains a home and office in Reston, Chuck's home on Cedar Creek in Shenandoah County has been the inspiration for many photographic projects.

Critique for Themed Competition Through Doors, Out Windows
Andy Klein, Scott Musson, Bill Prosser
January 11, 7:30 PM

In preparation for the Themed January Competition “Through Doors, Out Windows,” we will be having an image critique on January 11th.  Our critics will again come from the club's deep pool of  NVACC trained judges.  Critiques are an ideal opportunity for club members to gain more detailed explanations of what is most effective about their work, where it could stand to be improved in the eyes of the judges.  For this critique we have an esteemed team of judges, Andy Klein, Scott Musson and Bill Prosser.  We will need to complete the meeting by 9:15 PM in order to allow time for a Board meeting following the critique.  As always, we will attempt to accommodate as many images as possible.

Andy Klein started his passion for photography at an early age. An Argus was his first camera and small, scalloped edged muted color images his first photographs. Darkrooms and better cameras and lenses followed over the years. Andy has been a darkroom instructor, photography teacher, wedding photographer, and even occasional award winner. While landscapes are in his work, photographic storytelling is what he prefers…a combination of capturing the decisive moment (Eggleston, Winogrand, and Cartier-Bresson), the human condition (Walker-Evans, Mary-Ellen Mark, Dorthea Lange, Norman Rockwell, and David Hume Kennerly) and the lines and shapes of equipment and buildings (Bourke-White). He likes the simplicity and elegance of black and white. Emblematic of this is his preference for simple, unobtrusive cameras. As a judge Andy prefers to make the “competition” more of a teaching/learning experience and as time permits will discuss each photograph and what he sees and feels about each.

Scott Musson is a photographe rand lecturer and he frequently gives critiques, speaks and judges at photography organizations and clubs in the Northern Virginia and Washington DC metropolitan area. A Photographer of the Year for the Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS), Scott has published a photo calendar with his wife, Emi for the past nine years.

“Photography is a natural extension of my love for travel", says Scott. “While I've taken pictures all my life, it wasn't until I was older and could afford to travel, that my passion for photography truly developed. I love the whole process of photography: planning a shoot, getting up early to catch the light, processing the images (nowadays digitally), and printing and matting."

Scott has a passion for photography in and around water. He has been capturing images from a kayak and while snorkeling for a number of years. "I would snorkel everyday if I could," Scott says, and tries to make several excursions a year to the tropics to enjoy that aspect of photography.

Scott and his wife Emi have had a number of photographs used in the sets of major motion pictures. Most recently Scott's photo Lightning Steve was a prominent backdrop in the 2009 motion picture Wonderful World starring Matthew Broderick.

Scott is a past president of NVPS and has served on its board for several years. He has been Vice President of Competition and of Programs for NVPS and currently is its website manager. He has received the NVPS “Versatile Photographer of the Year” award and the "Advanced Photographer of the Year" award for Prints and Digital Projected Images.

Bill Prosser has been a serious amateur photographer for over 35 years. Beginning in the early 1970's he studied under a number of Northern Virginia teachers and mentors as well as Canadian photographer, Freeman Patterson. In 1995 he gave up the chemical darkroom for the computer; and subsequently gave up film for the digital chip in 2000 after learning Photoshop and working photographic images in his digital darkroom.  Also, in 1995 he began his current volunteer work at McLean High School where he teaches Photoshop, photography, and mentors students in visual design. He served as a teaching assistant for several Smithsonian Institution Photoshop Classes. He is a founding member, and past-president, of the McLean Photography Club and a 20 year member and board member of the Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS). In recent years he earned numerous "NVPS Photographer of the Year" and "Image of the Year" awards. He has exhibited his photographic images at University of Wisconsin-Madison and several Fairfax County Virginia venues.  Georgetown University purchased seven of his Washington, DC images to hang in its Graduate Public Policy Institute Faculty and Administrative Offices. His work has been published in the National Geographic Traveler Magazine and, most recently, the March/April 2008 AAA World Magazine.

Submission of Images for the Critique

Please submit your images by 6:00 pm on Monday, 10 January so that I can get the images sorted and copied onto media for Tuesday evening.  Images should be numbered in order of preference and have the photographer's name included for the critique, e.g., 1-JoeSmith.jpg, 2-JoeSmith, 3-JoeSmith.jpg.  Putting the number before the name allows us to use the computer to automatically sort the images.  Please size the images in accordance with the digital competition rules and email the images to critique@nvps.org.

For those who are new to the club, typical critique sessions will cover two images from all submitters and occasionally are able to get into the 3rd round of images before running out of time.  Please number your images accordingly.
Questions can be addressed to Matthew Schmidt at mgs "at" loreleistudios.com.

Interested in Abstract Photography?

If you are interested in Abstract Photography, NVACC is hosting its First Annual NVACC Juried Abstract Photography Exhibition at the Joseph Miller Center for the Photographic Arts in May 2011.  Mr. Miller will be the Juror for this inaugural event and he has graciously agreed to present a seminar on Abstract Photography at NVPS in February at our regular Workshop meeting on 8 February.
This is a unique opportunity to hear from Mr. Miller about his interest in Abstract Photography and what he looks for in an Abstract.  If you are a member of one of the NVACC member camera clubs or its affiliates, this is a rare occasion to hear from the Exhibition Juror prior to the event.

Stay tuned to FotoFax, NVPS' monthly newsletter for more information regarding the workshop.  For more information about the Exhibition contact NVACC.

If you have any questions, please contact Matthew Schmidt.

Portfolio Project
Scott Musson, Bill Prosser, Paul Simmons, and Sherwin Kaplan

The fourth Tuesday of January will be dedicated to the Portfolio Project. (For anyone unfamiliar with this club activity, please see http://nvps.org/main/meetings/portfolio/.) During the normal Members' Gallery digital slide section we will present past digital portfolios by Scott Musson, Bill Prosser, and Paul Simmons. They will discuss lessons learned in preparing their portfolios and Artist Statements. The Members' Gallery printed section will provide you with a chance to look at a number of portfolios prepared over the last three years. The portfolios on display will exhibit a number of different modes of printed presentation styles.

The Forum session will include presentations by Sherwin Kaplan and Scott Musson. Sherwin judged/critiqued all the portfolios over the last three years. He will discuss his insights about what goes into a good Artist Statement and Portfolio. He also will talk about how he "judges" a single portfolio image and an entire portfolio. Scott will give a brief digital slide show and discuss his research on various means to prepare and present a printed portfolio.

Photographing Architecture
Emi Wallace

If you like photographing architecture, there’s a small town in southern Indiana you might want to explore. Located just one hour south of Indianapolis is the town of Columbus. A word it uses to describe itself, says it best. It’s “unexpected”.

The American Institute of Architects ranked this town 6th in architectural innovation and design in the entire U.S.

Starting in 1942 and continuing today, this town of just 40,000 people (with the help of the Cummins Engine Foundation, part of a Fortune 500 company headquartered here) commissioned the

Pham

design and development some of the most unique buildings in the U.S.  Architects including Eero Saarinen, his father Eliel, I.M. Pei, and others, designed many of the buildings and churches here. Six buildings are National Historic Landmarks.

Taking one of the daily architectural tours provided by the visitor’s center (March-November) will give you the lay of the land, and a brief history of the town and buildings.  If you stay overnight and downtown, you’re within easy walking distance to many of the sites.

Suggested hotel: Hotel Indigo (note: this is a pet-friendly hotel, and their mascot, Miles, will likely be ‘on duty’ each day to greet you as you come and go). The following is a suggested itinerary.

Day 1:

  • 10am – take 2 hour architecture tour
  • Rest of afternoon—walk downtown and take pictures of the local buildings, bridges,
    Mill Race Park
  • Night—Evening shots of buildings
  • Overnight at Hotel Indigo

Day 2:

  • Drive to other buildings outside of the ‘downtown’ area, including many churches and the Ivy Tech campus

Meet Your Board Members

As part of a continuing series on our board members, we continue with biographies for Curtis Gibbens and Gayle Dennis.

Curtis Gibbens
Field Trips Coordinator

Curtis has enjoyed outdoor photography for over ten years, especially wildlife subjects.  Photography has made mornings his favorite time during the day. There are many weekends he wakes up earlier than the workweek. This is the time when this busy area is calm, the creatures are on the prowl and the light is at its best.

Curtis used to travel around the country for weeks and sometimes months at a time for work. He took advantage of this opportunity by taking his Nikon camera and exploring the area on weekends.  His equipment has improved since that time, but he no longer travels for work. But that doesn’t bother Curtis because some of  his favorite places are located in this area.

Curtis says, “NVPS has contributed to my growth as a photographer, especially transitioning from film to digital, which was a long and hard process. The members and the guest speakers have made my appreciation for photography grow. It has opened my mind to new techniques, such as rotating the lens during a shot.  It has also helped me find different subjects.”

Gibbens

Gayle Dennis
Membership Coordinator

Born in Connecticut, Gayle grew up in northern New Jersey and moved to Virginia to attend the College of William & Mary, where she met her husband. She graduated with a degree in Accounting, passed the CPA exam and has worked in finance positions at MCI, Worldcom, Verizon, Fox & Hounds and currently at AES. When not working she enjoys co-ed flag football, scuba diving, golf, travel and, of course, photography.

While Gayle dabbled in photography during high school, she didn't get back involved with it until her husband bought their first digital SLR (Nikon) several years ago. Soon thereafter she joined NVPS and has held the positions of Forums and Membership coordinators. She enjoys nature and abstract photography and always looks forward to traveling for the photographic opportunities it presents. Her software skills are limited to the basics with Photoshop Elements. Someday she'll learn to print her images and enter a few competitions outside of NVPS!

Dennis

NVPS is a motivational and learning tool for Gayle, and keeps her inspired through its excellent programs, workshops and feedback from competitions. She also values the friendships she has developed and mentoring that she has received from the other members of the club.
