All meetings for the club year will start at 7:30 PM at the Dunn Loring Fire Station. The doors will open at 6:45 PM for a "meet and greet". Remember to lock your car and place valuables out of sight. Please stay home if you're sick! As the weather becomes colder, there's a chance that a meeting may be cancelled due to snow or freezing rain. NVPS follows the Fairfax County school closing policy. Whenever evening activities in Fairfax County schools are cancelled on a meeting night [the activity cancellations are announced on TV and radio], the NVPS meeting will be cancelled as well. If you're unsure, you can call one of the Board members. We will also send out email to the membership list when a decision has been made. Please remember to take seats immediately when the meeting starts and to silence cell phones. |

from the President |
It is hard to believe that we are more than halfway through this club year. It has been an amazing year so far and by the time this goes to print, I wouldn’t be surprised if we hit the 250 member mark. This is an historic landmark in NVPS history. For me, the best part of being your President is getting to know you and welcoming all the new and prospective members. The diversity in ages, personalities, photographic experience and styles, is astounding and exciting.
I was very excited at our January WET critique and subsequent competition to see the prints projected on the screen. I believe that this is a real enhancement for the members who have had a difficult time seeing the prints on the lightbox. Although the color is not 100% accurate with the projection, the members at the competition overall agreed that they liked and appreciated it. As Timber Gooding said, “Think of this as a jumbotron”. You can always sit closer to the print box if you want to see the real thing. Many thanks to Jeff Namadan, Matthew Schmidt, John Naman, Gerry Abbott, Bryan Payne, Melanie Martz, Ed Ruggerio and many others for making this happen. Thank you also to the the members that came to the extra meeting in December to test this out and give feedback.
Although it is only the beginning of February, we are already starting preparations for 2010-2011. A club of 250 members needs many, many committed volunteers to keep it the most active and respected camera club in the area. We currently have approximately 40 people (between the board and other volunteers) that are giving selflessly of themselves. NVPS could not exist without them. Many have served tirelessly for many years and are in need of a break or retirement. Many are behind the scenes and therefore not in the spotlight (equipment manager, website manager, newsletter editor, tech team, coffee maker, etc.). Please take a moment at a meeting to thank some of these and other board members and volunteers.
And now the challenge begins. We will be in need of many new volunteers next year in vital and other positions. We will be needing a good mix of old and new blood in all areas – both technical and non-technical. All you need is the desire to get involved. Please email me or talk to me at a meeting about volunteering and what you can and would like to contribute. The best way to enjoy the club is to get involved.

Biography
Joseph Rossbach is a full time profession nature and landscape photographer, author, guide and workshop instructor. His work has appeared in a number of books and calendars, as well as national and regional magazines, including PHOTO Techniques, Outdoor Photographer, Mountain Connections, Blue Ridge Country, Digital Camera World and The Nature Conservancy. Joseph’s fine-art prints have appeared in national collections, galleries, personal collections and one-man shows. Joseph is also the co-author and photographer for 50 Amazing Things You Must See or Do in the Greater Washington D.C. Area (Mountain Trail Press) and The Ultimate Guide to Digital Nature Photography (Mountain Trail Press).
Joseph is also a team member and workshop instructor at Mountain Trail Photo as well as a Staff Course Instructor for The Nature Photographers Online Magazine. He travels the United States extensively capturing new and exciting images every year. Joe lives in Annapolis, Maryland with his wife Amber and their son Phoenix. The Lecture
Joseph will be showing a set of 25 images from 2009 entitled "Impression of Nature". In this lecture the group will see everything from the grand landscape to intimate details most often overlooked. Joseph will also discuss how he creates his "impressions of nature" through the use of powerful compositions, abstract design, control of natural light and special field techniques to create images that excite and inspire the viewer.Mary O'Neill

Shannon Ayres

On Tuesday February 16th, 2010, we will hold our sixth competition for the 2009/10 club year with Shannon Ayres as our judge. There is no theme for the February Competition.
Shannon Ayres was born in Chicopee, MA, but was raised in Homestead, FL, then a small agricultural town just north of the Florida Keys. Shannon’s early love of photography was influenced by copies of old LIFE magazines his parents kept around the house from the 1960s. This interest informs his current work which explores documentary not for societal change, but for personal discovery. Now living in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., Shannon is an instructor at the Smithsonian Institution, Maine Media Workshops and the Academy of Art University, where he received his MFA in 2007. He lives in Reston with his wife, Amy, and daughters Caroline and Emma.

February 13, 2010 to Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden enlightens and inspires its visitors through its outstanding botanical collections, horticultural displays and landscape design. It is beautiful year-round. There is almost always something in bloom - and plants don't have to be blooming to be interesting! Barks, berries, foliage and seedpods are fascinating and often quite beautiful. Flyers and sign-up sheets are available at club meetings.

Nature's Best Exhibition
Location: Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC
Date: March 10 or 11, 2010
A trip to Nature's Best Smithsonian Exhibition with Chuck Veatch is tentatively planned for either March 10th or 11th, for about 1 ½ hours, between 10:00 am and 1:30 pm. It will be limited to 20 participants. Stay tune for a definite date and details. Meanwhile, sign up sheets are available at club meetings

Faith by Design
Timber S. Gooding

Biography
A true native of Northern Va. , Timber has seen the area grow from beautiful and natural landscapes to the modern and exciting architectural arena is today. He has been involved in the arts his entire life, and recently became involved in photography as a hobby. As a professional makeup artist, he has a natural eye for color and composition , and has traveled around the world working for smashbox photo studios in Los Angeles. Now, he has moved his talents to behind the camera and enjoys every minute." I wish I had been into photography during my travels for work, but, now I have an excuse to go back to all the exciting places a second time!"
Timber is currently a member of NVPS and has received many awards from the club, including numerous 1st place images. He was honored with the Photographer of the Year" in the Enhanced Print category for 2007-2008, and again for advanced prints in 2008-2009. Timber was a finalist with an image juried into fotoweekdc(08) exhibit.
Timber really enjoys photographing landscape, architecture, wildlife and abstracts with macro. His specialty is finding the dramatic in the mundane.
"I shoot to please myself, and, enjoy being in control of my images. If I shoot for anyone else, then it becomes work!"
Forum Subject
Faith by Design is a presentation of a select number of images Timber has captured in local cathedrals, basilicas and churches. It is a 10 min presentation with music. Ninety percent of the images are High Dynamic Range (HDR). This is NOT a documentary on religion, but, the art and architecture of these wonderful, man-made monuments to religion; thus the title Faith by Design! Anna Gomez

Kent Mason

Kent Mason is a landscape & nature photographer and conservationist. Using his photography skills, he is currently creating a environmental study of the extraordinary wild places in the highlands of West Virginia. This collaborative effort with The Nature Conservancy will ultimately result in a book titled the West Virginia Wilderness: A Photographic Study and Conservation View.
Kent has been involved in photography for well over 25 years, teaching Visual Design classes for the past 10 years and facilitating a Body of Work workshop for advanced photographers. He sells fine art landscape photography, has displayed his work in such places as the National Wildlife Federation headquarters, has had images published in calendars and Nature’s Best magazine, and often has had images published on the TNC international website and in many of their publications. Kent leads photo tours in the West Virginia highlands where he lives six months of the year. He is proud that the 4 internet books he’s created for The Nature Conservancy have been helpful in their conservation efforts. A large collection of his images can be seen at www.wvphotographs.com.
Kent is a returning member to NVPS (was a member about 15 years ago). He worked as a professional wedding photographer for 12 years but migrated to conservation photography 8 years ago. After many years of shooting medium-format film photography, he switched to full frame digital when the Canon 5D emerged on the market. Currently he uses a Canon 5D Mark II for landscapes and is upgrading to a Canon 7D from a Canon 50D for wildlife. Kent does not have a favorite lens, but rather uses a large selection of Pro lenses to maximize his output on any shoot.
After 30 years in various police and correctional management positions, Kent retired as Deputy Director of the Department of Corrections in Montgomery Co., Maryland. He is married with 3 adult children and 7 grandchildren. His goal is clear: to assist West Virginia Nature Conservancy protect wilderness through photography.

| Yulan attributes her interest in photography to her father. She remembers him taking most of the family photos. At a young age she also remembers accompanying him to the darkroom at his office; she was fascinated to see her image appear on a piece of wet paper. When she was 8 years old, she received a German “toy camera” as a present from her aunt. Yulan had a lot of fun playing with it and taking photos of her friends and her sister. She learned how to develop film and prints in the darkroom at her middle school photo lab. |  |
In 1986, Yulan left China to pursue graduate studies at the George Washington University in the United States. She bought herself a camera and sent home many photos of her life in the States. In 2002 she used her first digital camera to capture web images for a local web business; she also used it when leading travel groups in China and Japan. In July 2007 Yulan bought herself a DSLR camera—a Nikon D80. At that point she started to become more passionate and serious about photography.
Yulan connects with nature photography—taking time to smell the roses and listen to birds sing. She enjoys travel photography, especially to her homeland of China, where she takes pleasure in her role as cross-cultural ambassador. Yulan feels these photography trips promote not only people-to-people connections but also document the rapidly changing history of this ancient civilization.
Currently she is learning about micro/close-up photography as well as fine art photography. Yulan joined NVPS in September 2008 and has taken several photography classes and field trips with Corey Hilz, Joshua Tailor and Joe Rossbach. The delight of photography has enriched her life and enlarged her circle of friends. She appreciates this gift and wholeheartedly embraces the joy it brings.
Yulan will be presenting two Galleries of approximately 40 images each. The first explores The Great Wall near Beijing and the second delves into the many Variations of Flowers.

Tom Hady
NVPS Member Tom Hady received an award for First Place in Large Monochrome Prints in PSA's Who's Who for North America On January 5th, 2010 during an NVPS meeting, Tom Hady, long time NVPS member, ex-President and past holder of many other board positions, was awarded a certificate from PSA (Photographic Society of America). This means the Tom had more monochrome photographs accepted into PSA International Exhibitions than any other member of PSA. Tom alsoranked 6th for North America Large Color Prints.

Exhibition Opportunities
Maryland Federation of Art—Artful Photography Exhibition
The Maryland Federation of Art (MFA) invites all artists residing in the United States to enter its first annual Artful Photography exhibition, an open-juried competition of images created in any form of photography.
Its objectives are to assemble an extraordinary selection of photographic art and to add another element to the cultural forum already offered by the organization. In addition, they hope to encourage excellence among photographic artists and to provide a rich new forum for the exhibition and saleof their work. The works selected will be on exhibit in the MFA’s Circle Gallery, 18 State Circle, Annapolis, Maryland from May 19 through June 13, 2010.
Images created via any form of photography will be accepted for consideration (i.e. shot on film, shot digitally, unaltered shots, alternative process, mixed media, digital manipulations, montages, photograms, etc.), so long as part of the image is photographically based. The deadline for entries is March 12, 2010.

Shrove Tuesday Dinner and Art Exhibition
Saint Patrick's Episcopal Church, 3241 Brush Drive, Falls Church, Virginia 22042, will hold an art show in conjunction with the Shrove Tuesday Dinner on February 16, 2010. All artists in the area are invited to participate in the exhibit, which will be open during the dinner. Art work may be delivered to Saint Patrick's on Sunday, February 14th, between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Artwork submitted by adults must be framed. Artwork ubmitted by children (12 years of age and under) must be matted or framed. The number of entries is limited to three for adults and one for children. Fees: Adults will be charged a fee of $3.00 for each piece of art submitted; children will be charged a fee of $1.00 for each piece. A 20% commission will be charged for artwork sold. In the Darkroom: Photographic Processes before the Digital Age
Exhibition at the National Gallery of Art
Through March 14
The National Gallery has assembled a fascinating exhibition of old methods of photographic reproduction; from Daguerreotypes, tintypes, albumin prints, gum dichromate prints, carbon prints, carbro prints, bromoils and more. Having "worked in the dark" for more than fifty years, I'd heard of most of these, but had never (knowingly) seen examples of many. They are a fascinating lesson in the many facets of our craft. I found examples of the same negative by Alfred Stiglitz, printed in three different media, especially interesting. Present and former darkroom workers will find the exhibit fascinating, and those who came to photography only in the digital age will learn a great deal about the history of their medium. The exhibit is in the West Building, ground floor, galleries 30-32.

Spring Flowers at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens Tuition: $125 (includes entrance fee to park) You will have plenty of opportunities to create classic flower photographs, ultra close-ups, abstract and photo impressionistic images. Chincoteague Island (Virginia) Tuition: $325 You can expect to photograph many different bird species like Willets, Sanderlings, Dunlin, Glossy Ibis, Terns, Osprey, Grackles, Little Blue Herons, Great Blue Herons, Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Cormorants and others that return to the island in the spring. There will be opportunities to photograph the fabled Chincoteague Ponies, Sika Deer and other wildlife that inhabits the island. We will also photograph ocean views, beach scenes, patterns and textures in the sand, marshes and plant life.

Developing a Creative Vision (Virginia/Maryland) Tuition: $395 This workshop is for photographers who are looking to challenge themselves and take their photography to the next level. While technical aspects of photography will be covered, the emphasis will be on enhancing your creativity and photographic vision. New Summer Photo Workshops in Down East Maine
Nationally acclaimed husband and wife photographers Frank Van Riper and Judith Goodman have inaugurated a series of week-long summer photography workshops in the picturesque town of Lubec, Maine, the easternmost point in the United States, featured prominently in Frank’s Pulitzer-nominated book Down East Maine/ A World Apart. Limited to only six participants a week, will cover all aspects of photography: landscape, portraiture, documentary, product, flash, etc. Tuition is $550.
