Message from the President

This has been a wonderful year for NVPS and many people deserve the credit. As you know, NVPS is very successful because of the volunteerism and willingness of members to share their time, talent, energy, enthusiasm and knowledge.

The annual End of Year (EOY) Banquet was a large success and was highlighted by the return of Joseph Miller (former President & Board member) and marked the beginning of Sandi Croan's reign as president. Many thanks are due Bob Friedman, as the overall Banquet coordinator and skilled program printer, Andy Klein (former President and Board member) for his thorough coordination with the hotel on food, bar and all facility aspects, Ed Funk (former President) for all plaque & trophy engraving, Sandi Croan & Matthew Schmidt, as Competition VPs, who expertly coordinated all the EOY judging, ribbon ordering & presentation, and the large administrative tasks. Others were very helpful during the banquet set-up as a team effort to help Willa Friedman.

Special recognition plaques were presented at the Banquet to Luella Murri for "lifetime contributions to NVPS", Matthew Schmidt for "future potential" and Joseph Miller for "inspiring and teaching photographers". Willa and Bob Friedman were recognized as "volunteers of the year" for numerous contributions. When the elected Secretary resigned, Willa volunteered. When the strong need for an EOY Banquet coordinator was identified, Bob volunteered. During Meadowlark, they volunteered for many different jobs. When the Dunn Loring coffee pots became overly encrusted with a tar-like substance, Bob researched the cost for new ones, presented the issue for Board approval, ordered & paid for the new systems, then made the coffee & tea each week, then cleaned & stored the two pots. All five people made outstanding contributions toward the success of NVPS.

Scott Musson & Sam Schaen, the two previous NVPS Presidents, provided very solid and appreciated advice, and, were both Board members with outstanding contributions. Scott was the "Past President" and Website Manager and Sam was the Fotofax newsletter editor and communication coordinator.

The Vice- President jobs are the most difficult of the club. Mary O'Neill was VP for Programs and coordinated well-known, outstanding, outside speakers who educated the members on numerous aspects of photography. The Competition VPs, Sandi Croan & Matthew Schmidt, were the perfect team. They provided outstanding judges for each monthly competition and ran the complex administrative aspects of scoring, standings, rules enforcement & themes selection. The Treasurer, Fred Chitty, did the perfect job of balancing the budget, paying bills, receiving & depositing checks & keeping the club solvent. Willa Friedman was an outstanding Secretary and Historian.

Emi Wallace always gave the most personal touch as Membership Chair, as she greeted all people at the Dunn Loring door with a smile and concentrated on new people to answer questions and make each feel welcome. Emi's membership successes were then added to the NVPS roster, which was expertly kept by Bob Friedman as Database Manager.

Many others were clearly focused on the education of members. Luella Murri continued her 5 plus year stint of contributions as Member's Gallery Chair in which she coordinated monthly for two very-skilled NVPS photographers, one to show prints and the other projected images. (Luella had previously proposed, won approval for, organized and hosted for 5 1/2 years, the television show, Photographers of Northern Virginia, which was a 30- minute show, broadcast four times weekly, to showcase the skills of local photographers.) On the same night as Member's Gallery, the very energetic Gayle Dennis, as the Forums Chair, followed perfectly in the footsteps of the late Dave Carter by highlighting the most talented NVPS presenters to educate members. Likewise, the Education, Training and Workshop team of Bill Prosser, Melanie Marts & Ed Ruggiero were resourceful and ingenious in coordinating presenters for our 2nd AND 5th Tuesdays, which included critiques and the very popular Portfolio Project with the skilled and passionate help of Ed Knepley.

Gerry Abbott volunteered as Field Trips Chair and charged off to plan, do reconnaissance of, and lead an inspiring string of field trips to Charleston, SC, Delaware, Pennsylvania wolf country and other very educational places. He produced great maps and his own images of the type scenes in preparation for each visit.

Thank goodness that John Quigley showed his spirit of volunteerism by agreeing, months into the NVPS year, to be the Exhibits Chair. He organized the club's image contribution, including a jury selection, for our first entry into the international Glennie Nature Exhibit in Massachusetts, in which NVPS showed very well and scored in the middle of 230 participating clubs.

The Meadowlark weekend event was very successful for NVPS mainly because of the hard work by Co-Chairs, Trinka Reddie and Yulan Guo, who attended many planning meetings and organized the NVPS part.
They were enthusiastically assisted by many volunteers, including Willa & Bob Friedman and Patricia Deege.

The weekly NVPS meetings were very successful because of the work of three "behind-the-scenes" Board members. Former President Andy Klein coordinated for the use of Dunn Loring and briefed us on personal security. The key operative and "jack -of- many- trades", John Naman, stored, maintained, brought-in, set-up, assisted in the focus and calibration of, the digital and slide projectors, print display box, and sound system–some aspects needed every week. Vivian Luu has been the Digital Competition Coordinator, who worked closely with Matthew Schmidt to receive digital entries for Competition and other meetings, then to skillfully project and alter the order of images and project Competition results.

Two other former Presidents and current Board members, Joseph Miller (as Northern Virginia Association of Camera Clubs [NVACC] Representative) and Tom Hady (as Photographic Society of America [PSA] Representative), represented NVPS to other organizations, constantly upheld the high reputation of NVPS, always offered sage, very thoughtful advice and participated in the education of members.

Non-Board members who deserve a special thank you, include: "Cookie Man" (Luan Ngo), Anna Gomez and Georgette Grossman for sound, John St. Hilaire & Tim Terryberry (along with John Naman) for lighting, Jean Feighery and Bob Friedman as Competition print passers, and Susan Breen for "earlier" coffee & tea. My sincere apologies to other people who have contributed, but were omitted by me.

Finally--thank you to all NVPS members for attending, learning and supporting NVPS and helping to make NVPS a great club.

Best wishes to all NVPS members from the 2008-09 Board for a great summer with many opportunities for photography. We hope to see you at Kenilworth in July and the exhibit in Reston on 1 September.

End-Of-Year Competition
End-of-Year Judge

Thanks to his dad, Elliot has been involved with things photographic since he was about 5 years old and working in his dad’s darkroom. His passion for the art and what can be created through photographic capture has grown stronger year after year.

His dad, now 93 years old, taught him a great deal about photography and it has been a most wonderful experience for Elliot to teach his dad digital photography. Even at 93 he is still shooting pictures and printing them.

Elliot's career, which spans over fifty years if he includes his dad’s darkroom, has taken him into many different areas of the photographic world. He has been a portrait photographer, wedding photographer, photo journalist, nature and scenic photographer, architectural photographer, military photographer, and a recorder of memories and history in those capacities. He has lectured, taught classes, and educated countless numbers of people about photography and digital workflow across the country and now wants to bring his experiences and knowledge to Blue Ridge Workshops.

He worked for Nikon for 33 years, selling and teaching and it gave him the incredible opportunity to be in the forefront of the digital revolution and certainly gave him the opportunity to learn all of the new technologies and deal with all of the challenges that those technologies brought with them. Having dealt with all those challenges has helped him teach the concepts of digital imaging and digital work flow to a great many aspiring photographers.

After retiring from Nikon, Elliot worked in photo retail, always hoping to create a company like Blue Ridge Workshops which would allow him to do the things he loved most—shoot images and teach. While in retail he did very advanced classes on Nikon single lens reflex cameras, and digital workflow.

The workshops that he now gives at Blue Ridge Workshops are very important to Elliot. They give him an opportunity to pass on his knowledge and experiences to others in a comfortable, easy to learning environment. By becoming the educator and bringing in other educators, each with their own particular slants on photography, he is finally achieving his dream—creating some of the best photography workshops available. He enjoys teaching others and expanding their knowledge, so they can record their world in new, different and creative ways. Your images today can influence your world of tomorrow and tell your story in a way that nothing else can.

Elliot's current choice of equipment is Nikon Digital Single lens reflex cameras and lenses and flashes. But as Elliot has quite often stated, "there is not a bad digital single lens reflex in the market place. They are all capable of producing incredible images, but never on their own."

Future Competition Themes
2009-2010

The competition themes for the 2009 - 2010 club year are below. Exact dates for each theme will be announced in September.

Flash: images where flash in or off camera is the principal light source

Monuments, Memorials, Statues: images where the dominant element(s) would consist of monuments, memorials or statues

Opposites: the image must present an opposite combination such as large/small, old/young, straight/crooked, round/square, animal/vegetable, dark/light, sharp/blunt, etc. etc. (Members Choice Theme)

2010-2011

The following themes have recently been selected by the Themes committee for the 2010-2011 season.

Through Doors, Out Windows: Images with a view through doors or windows, looking out or in. The window(s) or door(s) may be the subject themselves, or a framing device for some other scene.

Power of 3: – Images containing three (3) of an object or subject.

Old: Images which convey a feeling of great age.

2008 - 2009 Competition Team's Final Thoughts

NVPS had a terrific competition year. Many wonderful images were submitted over the nine competitions. On average, we had 126 images submitted each month. The judges were varied and we hope you all learned from their critiques.

We would like to thank the membership for their participation and many others who gave of their time willingly to help make the evenings run smoothly. In particular, we appreciate the monthly contributions of the following members:

John Naman for schlepping and setting up and taking down the equipment each month
Vivian Luu for downloading, setting up and running the digital competition and running the slide projector
Bob Friedman and Jean Feighery for passing the prints
Gayle Dennis for bringing the prints to the back table and getting the ribbons on the winners
Anna Gomez for helping with sound
Scott Musson for maintaining the website and especially the digital competition upload page
Sam Schaen for posting the winners to Fotofax and collecting the 1st place winners from people for inclusion in the newsletter.

New Submission Procedures

Please note that NVPS will require the date that your image was shot on the sign in sheet and in the competition upload program starting in Sept 2009. In a continuing effort to keep our members making new photographs for use in competition, an additional field will be added to the sign-in sheets for prints and slides, and the upload form for digital images entered into competition. This new field is a request for the date (or dates if it is a composite) of capture of the print or image being entered into that competition. Please be prepared to provide this information for every print, slide and digital image. It will be required for entry in future competitions. Now is a good time to start considering methods for determining and retaining the information required for competition entry. If you are shooting digitally you can use Bridge to look at the metadata (if you use a recent version of Photoshop).

Sunflowers, etc.
Location: McKee-Beshers Wildlife Management Area (Near Seneca, MD)
Date: Saturday, July 11, 2009
Time: 6 AM to 9:30 AM (it is not a requirement that you arrive by 6)

Note that there will NOT be any organized car pooling from Dunn Loring. Also note there is no need to “sign up” for this trip. Just arrive at the parking lot and walk over to the sunflower fields to begin photographing.

The field trip destination will be to the large sunflower fields located on the McKee-Beshers Wildlife Management Area. In addition to sunflowers, you may find numerous macro opportunities for subjects such as spider webs, dew drops, etc. As there will be mosquitoes and insects in the field, dress appropriately and bring insect repellent.

There is a parking lot off river road but there are no signs to indicate the sunflowers. Thus, follow these directions carefully and call Gerry (703.967.9677 mobile) if you can not locate the parking lot.

Head north on I-495, cross the Potomac River (for about 8 miles from I-66 intersection) and then take exit number 39 to merge onto MD-190/River Rd (west bound towards town of Potomac) Proceed west on River Rd. and pass through the town of Potomac (beware of speed camera) until finally reaching a stop sign (about 12 miles). At the stop sign, turn left. This is a continuation of River Rd. Proceed about 2.7 miles and the parking lot will be on the left. There is a Maryland Historical Sign (silver and black) on the left side of the road just prior to parking lot entrance. This sign says “Planetary Radio Emissions Discovery Site” plus a brief explanation. Inside the parking area, the Wildlife Management Area has a large sign board with various postings but it does not give a unique name to the parking area. Walk past the yellow gate to reach the sunflower fields. To find your own directions to the parking lot using www.googlemaps.com, set your destination to 39.081321, -77.373067.

Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens
Location: Washington, DC
Date: Sunday, July 12, 2009
Time: 7 AM to 10 AM

If you are entering Washington D.C. On I-395, continue on the SW/SE FWY towards its end and take the right exit on to Pennsylvania Ave SE. After crossing the Anacostia river, turn left onto the DC-295N (Anacostia Fwy). Take the exit toward Eastern Ave/Quarles St and merge onto Kenilworth Ave NE and then make a U-turn just before Eastern Ave. Turn right at Quarles St. NE and then left at Anacostia Ave NE. Take the second right turn which is the entrance to the Garden’s parking lot.

To find your own directions to the Kenilworth parking lot using www.googlemaps.com, set your destination to 38.91305,-76.94011

Although the gardens officially open at 7:00 a.m., the gates are frequently open earlier. To take advantage of the early morning light, I’d suggest arriving around 6:30 and enter the gardens as soon as the gate opens. After parking, gather your gear and proceed directly to the aquatic gardens and begin photographing.

On May 5th, 2009 NVPS held its annual election of officers. The current Secretary and History Willa Friedman confirmed that we established a quorum which is 15% of the paying membership according to the current By-Laws of NVPS. As the Chairman of the Nominating committee, I called a voice vote since the slate was running unopposed. The board was elected unanimously by the membership present.

The elected board will assume their elected roles at the conclusion of the annual end of year banquet on Friday June 5th. The appointed board was introduced during the banquet, they are:

Additional individuals will be recruited to support various board members such as Equipment Management, Membership & Field Trips (Tuan Pham & Pamela Brown have agreed so far, but we need others). If you would like to assist the board during the coming year, please contact Sandi Croan.

Congratulations and thanks to the incoming board for their willingness to volunteer their time and efforts to supporting this excellent organization. Also special thanks to the outgoing board for their dedication and efforts over the past year. It was another wonderful year at NVPS, and we certainly could have not done it without our elected board members time and effort.

I would like to extend as special thanks to two long time board members Luella Murri & Tom Hady for years of dedication to NVPS. Both of them have served many boards and improved the experience of NVPS for countless individuals sharing their time and expertise. NVPS had been a better place thanks to both Luella & Tom.

Tom Hady came in first in Large Monochrome prints in PSA's Who's Who with 52 entries accepted in international exhibitions. He also came in 6th in Large Color prints. Congratulations, Tom.

Mary Ann won first prize in the AAA Mid-Atlantic Photocontest and the picture, All Truckered Out. The photograph is in the current issue of AAA Magazine.

Timber Gooding and Melanie Marts will be exhibiting a selection of their images at Penn Camera in Tysons Corner. The framed prints will be displayed during the entire month of July. Please stop in during that time, and see the exhibit!

Dodge Color and Chrome Imaging have joined forces to offer the most comprehensive line of custom photo, digital and graphic imaging services in the Metro DC area under the new name Dodge-Chrome, Inc. The original companies opened for business in the early 80s and quickly grew into Washington's premier photo and digital labs. As time passed, Chrome found its niche providing services to professional and amateur photo markets, adding short-run printing capability in recent years. Dodge Color evolved into a large format print and finishing provider with a more commercial client base.

B&H Photo is offering a rebate on compact flash cards through July 13. The amount is between $10 and $65 per card depending on the number and type of card you buy. As an example, an 8 GB Extreme IV sells for $114; but after the $60 rebate, the cost is $54.

Gallery West presents an exhibit of artwork inspired by Alexandria and other local environs. Receptions will be held Thursday June 11 from 6 to 9 PM and Saturday June 13 from 5 to 8 PM

Magnum Photos is pleased to announce the first annual Expression Photography Award in association with HP. The award, established with the goal of inspiring change through photography, aims to discover compelling documentary photography employed to affect social awareness.

The winner will receive a $10,000 grant to support the continuation of his/her work as well as photographic equipment and supplies. Two honorable mentions and 17 finalists will also receive awards to support and encourage their photographic work. Participation is at no cost and photographers worldwide are encouraged to submit. Information can be found at: http://expression.magnumphotos.com. The deadline is September 30, 2009.

The Maryland Federation of Art invites all artists residing in the United States to enter its 9th Annual American Landscapes exhibition, a nationally open-juried mixed media competition. Any two or three dimensional work depicting the American landscape will be considered. Entries must be postmarked by June 30, 2009.

En Foco's New Works Photography Awards Fellowship is an annual program selecting three or more U.S. photographers of Latino, African and Asian heritage, and Native Peoples of the Americas and the Pacific. Three photographers will be selected from an open and national call for entries, to receive a $1,000 honorarium, photo-related supplies, technical assistance, a photographer’s page on enfoco.org, an article in Nueva Luz, an En Foco Membership and a culminating group exhibition in New York City in the Spring-Summer of 2010.

The fellowship will be juried by Anne Wilkes Tucker, Curator, Museum of Fine Arts / Houston. The entry deadline is July 31, 2009.

Loudoun Visions: Images by Loudoun Photographers

The Friends of Franklin Park Art Center announce the Call for Entries for "Loudoun Visions: Images by Loudoun Photographers" for photographic images of Loudoun by photographers living in Loudoun County. The show will be held at the Franklin Park Performing and Visual Arts Center Gallery from July 6 through July 31, with an Opening Reception on Friday, July 10 from 6 - 9 PM. It’s time again for National Wildlife’s Photo Contest. The magazine invites you to enter your favorite images in its 39^th annualcompetition.
