Tom Brett NVPS is very fortunate to have new energy, ideas and talents among members, which will keep our club as the most educational and exciting club in the area and will keep us growing. NVPS is also very fortunate to have a very talented, giving and conscientious group of Board members, who have worked very hard and deserve a "thank you" from all because of the high quality of judges, Program presenters, NVPS member educational presenters, educational opportunities, field trips, membership services, critiques, exhibits, image projection, treasury safeguarding and cookies / coffee refreshments. The Board members are all volunteers. We are also very fortunate that the many and highly skilled "outside" judges and speakers volunteer to share their experience and knowledge with us, so as to increase our love and knowledge of photography. The Nominating Committee has been appointed, as required by the NPVS Constitution. Its duty is to prepare a slate of proposed officers and to serve for the 2009-2010 club year, if elected. The success of NVPS is based on the all- volunteer members who organize and run the many, varied club programs. So, if you are asked by the nominating committee to serve as a Board member, please, agree to serve and to "give back" to NVPS. Congratulations to the 40 members whose images were selected for display at the Meadowlark Expo, along with images from 5 other clubs. Please do not miss the Keynote speaker, the famed National Geographic photographer, Bruce Dale on Friday, 6 March and the full image display and wonderful presentations on the weekend of 7, 8 March. Thank you to all who submitted images----there were many, many very fine images that were not selected, because there will only be space for 22% of submitted NVPS images. [See www. MeadowlarkPhotoExpo.org] If you are enrolled in The Washington School of Photography, or plan to enroll for summer or fall 2009, please talk to or email me. There may be some financial assistance available. NVPS has an award to recognize outstanding service to the club by a club member. It is the Joe Atchison Service Award and is the highest award given by NVPS to a member. The late Dave Carter was the first recipient and six others have followed as recipients. Nominations are to be submitted by members for a board to consider the nominees. More details will come by NVPS email. Please look into the energetic Field Trip schedule planned by Gerry Abbott, including Charleston, SC on 2 - 5 April 2009 and an annual favorite, Kenilworth Gardens in July. NVPS members are welcome to attend Board meetings as observers. The next meeting will be on Mon., 2 March 2009, at 7PM at the Fairfax County Government Center in Board Rooms 4 - 5. Non-Board members who desire to attend should inform me in order to ensure sufficient space & chairs. Your suggestions are always welcome to help keep the club strong and responsive to your desires as members. Please submit to me or other Board members. All NVPS members and friends send their best wishes to "Professor" Joseph Miller for a hasty and full recovery from his medical condition and release from the hospital soon. He is making steady, slow progress. Current reports will continue to come through NVPS email. As a reminder, visitors, flowers and phone calls are still not permitted; cards are fully appreciated and should be sent to his home address: Joseph Miller, 4811 Catharpin Rd., Gainsville, VA 20155-1318. He also appreciates and believes in the value of prayers. Amie has been with him daily and deserves great credit.
Wide Asleep (Day), Half Awake (Night)
Please join us for an evening filled with evocative images
made by Michael Borek, a photographer with a truly distinctive vision.
Michael is originally from Prague, in the Czech Republic. There, his
photography primarily focuses on old, delapidated structures in which
he is looking for poetic juxtaposition and real atmosphere. His photography
from the USA focuses on his interpretations of Americana, which he
combines with his love of the surreal and unexpected. Michael's extraordinary
palette reflects a moody, interpretive version of what's "real",
and on March 3, Michael will discuss some of the techniques that he
employs in order to achieve the dream-like expressiveness found in
his photographs. Michael's work can be seen currently at the "Multiple
Exposures" gallery in the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria,
VA, and on his website at www.michaelborek.com. Mary O'Neill
There is no limit to what you can photograph at night. On March 10th, Gary Silverstein will discuss techniques for using film and digital cameras to take night photos. The workshop will begin at 7:30 PM at the Dunn Loring Fire Station. He will also provide examples of local venues and ordinary subjects that lend themselves to nighttime photography—and explain why you should leave the comfort of your warm, dry home to take pictures on the next rainy/snowy/foggy evening. After the presentation, he will lead a field trip to photograph the neon signs that adorn the Chili’s and On the Border restaurants at 8053 Leesburg Pike (behind the Borders Books in Tysons Corner). Gary’s interest in nocturnal photography reflects his belief that the light at night can give magical qualities to otherwise ordinary scenes. His favorite nighttime subjects include cityscapes, landscapes, trains, fireworks, the moon, baseball, neon signs county fairs, and puddles. When not working his day job, he operates Night Visions, a photographic business that specializes in night photography. His images of Washington, D.C. at night have been published on calendars, posters, and greeting cards. You can view a sample of his work at http://nightvisionsphotography.com/default2.asp. If there are any questions, please contact one of the Workshop Coordinators:
Competition Judge Judy Switt will be the judge for our March 16th competition. Please
join Judy and Sandi for dinner at Chili's at 5:45 prior to the competition.
Please be reminded that competition rules require that all parts
of entered images must have been photographed within 2 years of the
competition date.
Judy Switt joined her first camera club in Michigan in 1966. She moved to Maryland in 1972 and immediately joined the North Bethesda Camera Club. She has been on the NBCC board in one position or another, including President, since 1973. She feels that there is no better way to enjoy a club than by becoming a member of the Board or its committees and sharing your time and abilities. While in Michigan, Judy met Larry West and John Shaw. They, along with Freeman Paterson and Andre' Gallant have shaped her love for photography. And, of course, Joe Miller has taught her all the do's and don'ts of visual design. Along with her long-time photo-partner, Gordie Corbin, she has presented programs throughout Maryland and Virginia as well as in neighboring states. They have written articles for national magazines such as Popular Photography and Petersen’s Photographic and have judged camera club competitions and PSA International Salons. In addition to writing, speaking and judging, Judy’s photographs have been published and exhibited throughout the area and have won top Popular Photography and Natures Best magazine awards. Gallery Laura Howell began pursuing her interest in photography many years ago–but
only during the past seven years has she taken a serious interest in her
favorite hobby. Since focusing on photography, Laura has become
a distinguished and award-winning photographic artist. Laura Howell Digital Projection Bill has been a member of NVPS for the last eight years. He has a Ph.D. and worked at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory before coming to D. C. to work for the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board. Only since joining NVPS has he begun to develop his photography as an art form, although he has made photographic records of family activities for many years. He is now completely digital, using a Pentax DSLR and a Panasonic point-and-shoot camera. He loves to learn about photographic techniques and improve his skills. Although he enjoys travel and other forms of photography, nature is his first love. Bill has had prints juried into the last two Meadowlark shows and recently made the top five in the NVPS portfolio project. Luella Murri

Yulan Guo (yguova@yahoo.com) and
Hey! Where’s
my NVPS Email? We’ve had a few people mention that they were not getting some of the emails the NVPS has been sending out. After a little investigation it turns out that some people have not been signed up both of the NVPS email distribution lists. We have two lists for NVPS to address some previous suggestions that we limit the amount of unwanted SPAM in peoples inbox. So there is one list which is for Fotofax and Club Related Announcements and one for Miscellaneous Announcements which includes non club activities, workshops and general information. We’re very strict about what ges sent out on the Club Related Announcements list but both lists have a very light amount of activity. You can always sign up for either one or unsubscribe from either one at the website under “Announcement Lists” (soon to change to “Join email lists”). Currently, it can be found at: http://nvps.org/main//about/announcement-lists/ Don’t worry if you are already signed up, you can sign up twice, it will let you know you are already signed up and you will only get one announcement. If you are not signed up, you will need to acknowledge your joining the list through an automated email. This is a requirement from our service provider. We’ve had a few members (particularly using AOL) who have had their NVPS email go their SPAM folder. Double check that the email isn’t going to your SPAM folder and add nvps.org as an allowed sender if your service allows. If you don’t know how to find your SPAM folder or set allowed senders, check your online help with AOL or whatever service provider you have, each one is different. If you have questions about NVPS email or need assistance, please feel free to contact me at webadmin@nvps.org, and I’ll do what I can to help. Scott Musson
