You and the audience will critique your photographic images January13. This will be an experimental approach, more later in this article. The workshop will begin at 7:30 PM at the Dunn Loring Fire Station. Critiques are designed to give you educational feedback on your photographic efforts. We encourage you to submit images that are eligible for the January themed-competition- -"Rhythm"-- or relate to recent field trips, programs or workshop topics. You are limited to three images per person. (To maintain educational integrity, if too many images are submitted, we may limit the critique to two images per person in order to ensure sufficient time for each image.) We hope you will be able to learn about visual design/composition and other aspects of good photography from observing this critique. You are encouraged to enter images as digital or film slides rather than prints, because they are easier for everyone in the viewing audience to see. You may, however, bring prints for critique if you wish. (Binoculars also help one to view prints.) Please designate your priority preferences -- one, two, or three--for each and all images entered. For images submitted for digital projection, please use the following labeling: A- (Advanced in at least one competition category) or N- (Novice in all competition categories); your priority -1, 2 or 3; followed by your name, and title (optional); e.g., A-2-Bill Prosser-(Senica Window.) (Please use 1, 2, or 3, not 01, 02, 03.) Email digital .jpg images no larger than 768 x 1024 pixels to Bill Prosser (prosserwm@aol.com no later than Sunday evening, January 11. We will critique all the 1's before moving the 2's. For film slides (and prints) we will have three trays (stacks) designated, 1, 2, and 3 for you to sort you pictures into. If you bring film slides or prints, please arrive several minutes early to get your images in the correct tray or stack. Regarding the judging, we will show all the images in a category once,
like we do for judges, and then ask the audience to rank each image using
the following categories: 1- Very possible ribbon winner, as is; 2-Has
potential, but needs polishing; 3-Not competition quality because of technical,
composition/visual design issues, or other reasons which cannot be corrected
in the image as taken. Then for that image, we will ask at least one person
who has recorded a 1, 2, and 3 to explain their rationale.

Competition Judge Steve Uzzell is one of the top advertising and corporate photographers
in the country. He started in the photography business 35 years ago
as the assistant to the editor of National Geographic and
a member of their photographic staff. He now shoots for a roster of
clients that includes airlines and automobile manufacturers; travel,
shelter, and fashion magazines; many of our United States; and even
some foreign countries. His work has garnered international acclaim
and won numerous awards, including 10 from Communication Arts.
Along the way, he has published two books, Maryland,
and The View from Sterling Bluff and had editorial
work published in over 80 publications.
You can view Steve's work at his website: www.steveuzzell.com Rhythm Definition and Guidelines Rhythm is more than repetition. Rhythm is harmonious pattern characterized
by the regular or predictable recurrence of strong and weak elements,
usually lines and shapes. In rhythm, there exists some directional
movement in the repetition, such as, undulating sand dunes, rolling
hills, winding pathways and rushing water. Rhythm is soothing and
our eyes beg to follow rhythmic patterns. Rhythm brings both order
and a sense of dynamic to a photograph, just as it does to a musical
piece.
Please remember that photographs entered into this competition
must have been captured within 2 years of the competition date (on
or after January 21, 2007).
NOTE: We are aware that Tuesday, January 20th is Inauguration Day.
Please allow plenty of time to get to the meeting as there might
be significant traffic delays.
If you have any questions, please contact Sandi Croan at pashli@aol.com or Matthew Schmidt at mgs@loreleistudios.com. Below are some images that received a first place award in the December competition. Clicking on one of the pictures will display a larger version.
First place winners in future competitions may be submitted to editor@nvps.org. Submitted photos should have maximum width and height of 1024 pixels and 768 pixels respectively. Images should be sent to editor@nvps.org by the Friday following the competition. December Competition Results

Gardens Conservatory We will meet at the Longwood Ticket Office by 9:00 AM. The club photo shoot will last until Noon (however, you can stay until Garden closes at 5:00 PM). The Group discounted admission is $12 ($11 for seniors 62+) As this field trip is being scheduled for mid-winter, we will focus almost entirely on the display areas of Longwood’s Conservatory. The conservatory is one of the world's great greenhouse structures. It shelters 20 indoor gardens and 5,500 types of plants. The Conservatory was built in 1919 and has been periodically expanded and renovated. At present, there are 195,668 square feet—or 4.5 acres—of covered display, production, and research greenhouses. During our visit, Longwood will be holding its Orchid extravaganza (from January 24th through March 31st). During that time, thousands of orchid blooms will fill the Conservatory. Innovative displays, including a spectacular Living Wall of Orchids will also be featured. Visit http://www.longwoodgardens.org/default.html to learn more about the history of the garden as well information regarding the horticultural highlights. Longwood’s regulations regarding photography are as follows: Personal photography and video are permitted at Longwood Gardens. All photographers must sign a permission form indicating that any photographs or video/film footage taken at Longwood will not be used for promoting commercial products or services. Sessions are limited to garden photography, not wedding photography, individual or family portraits, product photography, or portfolio photography for aspiring models. Photography sessions must not interfere with the enjoyment of Longwood's other guests. Tripods are allowed in the Gardens daily from 9:00 am-12:00 noon. You must fill out a permission form and receive a tripod tag from the information Desk. In an effort to accommodate all visitors safely at Longwood, tripods users are asked to remove their tripods by noon each day. Gallery Stephen J. Gawarecki retired from the U.S. Geological Survey as a geologist and remote sensing specialist. A camera always accompanied him on his travels throughout the world, so photography became a natural direction for Steve’s artistic talents. Since becoming a serious photographer in 1975 he has specialized in evocative, moody landscapes; architectural abstracts; and still lifes. He works mainly in color, employing subtle contrasts of light and shadow which range from the monochromatic to full-bodied color. Steve has participated in the U.S. Geological Survey National Exhibitions in every year from l975 through the present, as well as exhibitions at the McLean Art Club, the Springfield Art Guild, and the Vienna Art Society. He has also shown in the annual Ellipse Gallery Regional Photography Show, the Shenandoah and Old Dominion Circuit Salons and received many equal awards from the Art League. He has won awards in NVPS, the City of Vienna Annual Photographic Show, the U.S. Geological Survey, the Vienna Art Society, the Art League, and the Springfield Art Guild. Steve has had two one-man shows at the Colorfax Galleries in Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C., has shown at Cudahy’s Gallery in Richmond, and had a two-person show in 1983 at the USGS with his wife, Carolyn Grossé Gawarecki, a noted Virginia watercolor artist and instructor. He has lectured for art and photographic organizations on artistic, scientific, and technical aspects of photography. Steve is a member of the Art League, Vienna Arts Society, Springfield Art Guild, USGS Camera Club, and the Northern Virginia Photographic Society. . Digital Projection Bill has been a member of NVPS for the last eight years. He has a Ph.D. and worked at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory before coming to D. C. to work for the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board. Only since joining NVPS has he begun to develop his photography as an art form, although he has made photographic records of family activities for many years. He is now completely digital, using a Pentax DSLR and a Panasonic point-and-shoot camera. He loves to learn about photographic techniques and improve his skills. Although he enjoys travel and other forms of photography, nature is his first love. Bill has had prints juried into the last two Meadowlark shows and recently made the top five in the NVPS portfolio project. Luella Murri

In 2008, the invitation area was expanded beyond the New England boundaries
with great success; 52 clubs participated. For the 2009 Exhibition, the
invitation area will be enlarged again. The intent is to provide
many more clubs with the opportunity to participate in this premier event. The
increased spectrum of Nature specimen is a goal, as well.
For the first time, a Best Wildlife Award will be presented. “Best
Of” and Merit Awards will be presented in each the following categories: Amphibians,
Birds, Botany, Insects, Land and Seascapes,
Mammals, Marine
Life, Reptiles.
Each club may submit ten (10) images, which conform to the PSA Nature
definition and guidelines for the manipulation of Nature images. An
individual may submit no more than two (2) images, even through more than
club.
Visit www.glennie-exhibition.com to view last year’s results. In order to participate, NVPS needs one or more volunteers to coordinate selection and submission of images. Please contact Tom Brett if you are willing to serve as the coordinator.
