Joe Rossbach
Abstracting Nature

Joseph Rossbach specializes in creating unique images of the American Wilderness with an emphasis on the East Coast from South Carolina to Maine. Joseph has been photographing the natural world for over 12 years and has traveled to the deep canyons of the Southwest to the rugged coasts of New England in search of beautiful and evocative images of the American Wilderness. Joe’s work has been published in magazines, calenders, advertising campaigns, web sites, art galleries and books. A few of Joe’s clients include Blue Ridge Country Magazine, Digital Camera World, Photo Techniques Magazine, The Potomac News and Mountain Connections Magazine.

Joe also spends a good deal of time speaking and lecturing at regional and local Camera Clubs along the East Coast. He brings a unique flare to his photography by using special techniques to create unique abstract images of common scenes and places. Joe has been leading photo tours and workshops for the past few years and also teaches photography classes at Meadowlark Gardens in Vienna, Virginia. Joe lives with his wife Amber and their son Phoenix in Annapolis, Maryland.

Joe is also a workshop instructor with Mountain Trail Photo Workshops and a team member along with Ian Plant, Richard Bernabe, Jerry Greer, Bill Lea, Jim Clark,Guy Tal, Nye Simmons and George Stocking. His work can be found at his website (http://www.josephrossbach.com/).

Workshops, Education, and Training

An introduction to Black Light Photography
Scott Musson
December 9, 2008

On Tuesday, December 9th, Scott Musson will present an interactive presentation on Black Light Photography.  The first portion of the evening will be a lecture and demonstration of Black Light Photography techniques, on how to use this unusual lighting to create surreal, entertaining and even artistic images.  Black light makes fluorescent colors glow brightly, causes other items to glow in the dark, and it affects a number of common household items in interesting ways.

After the lecture, you will have an opportunity to shoot in Black Light at 3 different stations, either by using the information you received in the lecture, or by trying your own ideas.

Since Black Light Photography is done in low light, here are some of the things you should bring, so you can participate at the stations:

  • Your camera, with a lens that can focus fairly close to your subject (the closer the better), with a general length of at least 50mm to 135mm
  • A tripod

Some optional items:

  • A cable or remote shutter release.
  • Macro lens, close-up filters, or extension tubes.
  • UV/haze filter on your lens.

We hope you will join us for this event, it should be fun!  Educational even!  Hopefully it will inspire you to try this very different lighting technique.

If there are any questions, please contact one of the Workshop Coordinators:

Competitions

Competition Judge
Jim Sollo
December 16, 2008

Jim Sollo has been a member of NVPS since 1982. While he no longer attends many of the organizations' meetings, he always come to the annual NVPS Banquet and is continually impressed with the quality and creativity of the the images made by the NVPS members. During the period that he competed in NVPS photo competitions, he won numerous awards for his images including Photographer of the Year and Slide of the Year. A complete failure in Black and White photography (he never could make a satisfactory print), and a near Luddite when it comes to making digital images, he continues to work exclusively in color slides.  In spite of these deficiencies in his skills and abilities, he likes to think that he brings the same criteria to judging all images. And having taken thousands of really awful images himself, he feels well-qualified to discuss, at length, just about every mistake an aspiring photographer can make.

Jim believes that photography is an art form, and as such it is not a competitive enterprise. Nonetheless, in the spirit of Dave Carter, Joe Miller, Jim Steele and other fine photographers within NVPS who have provided photographic critiques of members' images, he believes that we can all learn things from each other as we discuss images. He hopes that his critique of images presented during the December competition will encourage all the presenting photographers and will be useful to them in evaluating and improving their own images.

Jim admits to being drawn to images with strong visual content, dynamic use of color or tonality, where some thought has been given to composition. Artistically, he is partial toward images which capture or create a sense of mood or stir emotions. He appreciates imagery which shows us something familiar in a unique or unexpected way and he gravitates toward images which provide an interpretive or impressionistic view of a subject, rather than a documentary approach.

If you have any questions, please contact Sandi Croan at pashli@aol.com or Matthew Schmidt at mgs@loreleistudios.com.

Field Trips

Bald Eagle Photography at Conowingo Dam
Susquehanna River (MD)
Saturday, December 6, 2008

Departure Time: 7:00 a.m. (car pooling from Dunn Loring)
Photo shoot : 9:00 until noon
No admission charge

Our next scheduled field trip is to the Conowingo Dam on the Susquehanna River in Harford County Maryland.  The field trip is primarily for photographing and viewing the Bald Eagles but there are other photo opportunities in the area.  Typically at this time of the year, large numbers of bald eagles can be seen near the dam and this provides some of the best eagle photography in the Mid Atlantic States.  In addition to the eagles, there are numerous Cormorants, Great Blue Herons, Gulls and other birds along the river.

I would suggest everyone bring a pair of binoculars for the trip.  As for camera gear, there are two strategies that work well for photographing the eagles at this site.  One strategy is to take the longest lens and sturdiest tripod that is available to you.  This strategy gives you the opportunity to photography distant perched or flying eagles.   The other approach is to take the longest lens that you can comfortably hand carry.   This approach is sometimes more useful for photographing the eagles that often fly over the shooting area and perch in the nearby trees.  Contact me with any questions that you have about photographing the eagles.

The dam is located about 90 miles northeast of Dunn Loring (take interstate 95 north until exit 89).  Specific driving directions and other trip information will be provided.  To sign up or inquire further about the trip, please call or email Gerry Abbott.

Photographic Style

Many photographers like nature photography and some wonderful images of nature are produced.  Others produce competent images -- all well done, all well exposed, all reasonably well composed, all sharp if needed to be sharp, all potential ribbon winners, all so slightly different they all seem the same. Among the icons of photography, Ansel Adams is known primarily for his nature work, but many other great photographers are not - - Weston, Cartier-Bresson, Stieglitz, Steichen, Evans, Lange, Karsh, Newton, Mapplethorpe, to name a few.

My kingdom for the brave photographer who dares to be different, who dares to develop his/her own artistic vision and style. Personally, I intend to spend the rest of my photographic life promoting photography as art. Today there is a veritable tsunami of excellent photographs made every day. How does one produce an image that is good and also unique and different? Mimetic photography, regardless of how well done, is not enough. Technology makes it easy for us to produce a good photograph. Finding our own style is another matter.

George W. Glennie Nature Interclub Exhibition

NVPS has been invited to participate in the 29th annual George W. Glennie Nature Interclub Exhibition, which will be held by the Merrimack Valley Camera Club, North Andover, MA on March 28, 2009.   While this digital-only showcase event is conducted as an interclub activity, awards for individual images will be presented as well.

In 2008, the invitation area was expanded beyond the New England boundaries with great success; 52 clubs participated.    For the 2009 Exhibition, the invitation area will be enlarged again.  The intent is to provide many more clubs with the opportunity to participate in this premier event.  The increased spectrum of Nature specimen is a goal, as well.

For the first time, a Best Wildlife Award will be presented.  “Best Of” and Merit Awards will be presented in each the following categories: Amphibians, Birds, Botany, Insects, Land and Seascapes, Mammals, Marine Life, Reptiles.

Each club may submit ten (10) images, which conform to the PSA Nature definition and guidelines for the manipulation of Nature images.  An individual may submit no more than two (2) images, even through more than club.

Visit www.glennie-exhibition.com to view last year’s results. In order to participate, NVPS needs one or more volunteers to coordinate selection and submission of images. Please contact Tom Brett if you are willing to serve as the coordinator.
