Nature's Best Photography--the Magazine, the Annual International Contest, the Exhibit
Chuck Veatch

Chuck Veatch will present an exciting Program about Nature's Best Photography winning images and tell "why they won". He will also discuss how the overall annual international photography competition is judged, how their magazine cover photographs are chosen, how they select the articles, how the magazine "comes together" and the new upload of images.

Chuck is a nationally respected nature photographer who did all the photography and writing and published the book, "The Nature of Reston", about the flora and fauna of this celebrated area of Virginia.
His creative photography has appeared in many publications, including the cover photograph and story in "Nature's Best Magazine", which covered an artistic look at the landscape of the American Southwest.

He is a Vice President of Nature's Best Publishing and is part owner and actively engaged in day to day activities of "Nature's Best Magazine", including image selection and editorial content.

Chuck is a past president of NVPS and was named a Photographer of the Year 4 times by NVPS. He is a 2- time graduate of the Freeman Patterson workshops in Canada and is a frequent judge and lecturer on photography and visual design.

He serves on the Board of Directors of the Greater Reston Arts Center, the Fairfax County Parks Foundation, the Endowment Board for the National Wildlife Federation, and the Advisory Board for the Potomac Conservancy.

Chuck is a great lover of nature, a passionate and very talented photographer, and great friend of NVPS.

Chuck regrets that he will not be able to come to dinner with NVPS members on 1 April.

Message from the President

Scott Musson

Thank you all for your kind words about my article last month “An Ounce of Prevention” about backing up your precious image files so a hard drive failure won’t mean losing all of your images.  In the process of discussing this topic with many people I discovered that not a lot of people have a file organization plan, but have somewhat randomly put files in directories/folders and consequently have a very hard time finding groups of images let alone specific images.

This month I would like to share my methodology of organizing my image files on my computer's file system which of course is replicated on an external hard drive.

I generally organize my files by year, month, day and subject in a hierarchical folder structure. Usually the way I shoot images matches up with this methodology, but on the occasions it doesn’t work I have  some techniques to reorganize the images to fit this model, usually be creating some additional folders.

First at the beginning of every year I create a new high level folder for the year:

Year

Then I create folders for the month as a subfolder of the year.  At the end of the year there will be 12 subfolders, one for each month.  Then within each of the months, all the different subjects or shoots are separated into separate subfolders.  So for the month of March, here's what my folder structure looks like:

In the picture above only the March folder is expanded, there are lots of subdirectories under January (01) and February (02), but they are collapsed.  Since the file system uses string sorting of the names of the folders I specifically use ("01", "02", "03", etc.).  This way the months will sort chronologically.  If you use the name of the month,

Folders Month

they will sort alphabetically (April, August, etc.) and
if you don't use the leading zero your months will sort incorrectly in some file systems (not all).

Now within a specific shoot, further divide the directories.  I have a sub directory for my Photoshop files (called PSD) and one for my JPEGs called JPEG and I leave my RAW files in the top directory  (Example 03_09_2008 - US Botanical Gardens).

I use the following format in naming my folders with individual locations or subjects, they are named using the format of (MM_DD_YYY - Shoot Location or Name).  This naming convention again supports chronological order of my images inside the month folder.

There are two major advantages to organizing your files with this technique.  I can search for images by location using the search dialog and I can browse chronologically for images.

Searching for images that I shot at the US Botanical Gardens can be found by searching for "*Botanical*."  (* is the wildcard symbol for searching in Windows/DOS based operating systems.)  If you add the dot "." at the end it will find directories or folders only and not files.  If I'm browsing chronologically I can find shots I took last fall at the Balloon festival by looking in the September (09) and October (10) subfolders in 2007.

Folders Shoot

If you are comfortable navigating in the Windows command prompt, navigate to the root of you image files and type the word "tree" and you'll get a tree depiction of your directories which may help you find directories if you don't know exactly when you took the images you are looking for.  To the right is the output of the "tree" command:

Hopefully this will give you some ideas on how you will organize your files.  Remember there is no right way or wrong way to do this.  The best way is a way that works for you.  There are more advanced techniques such as using keywords through Photoshop, Lightroom or another program.  This technique takes considerably more effort, but if you have huge libraries of images this may be an appropriate technique for you.

Competitions

April 15, 2008
Kathryn A. Brown
Themed Competition

Geometry in Photography is the announced theme for the NVPS APRIL 15, 2008 monthly competition. (For detailed theme definitions, please check the NVPS website). Not only is this a themed competition, but it is time-dated as well, meaning the original image capture must have occurred within 2 years of the competition date. Kathryn A. Brown, full-time, self-employed, commercial photographer since 1983, will be returning to NVPS as the judge. Her specialties include 35mm coverage of a wide range of special events and corporate needs but also architectural photography done with large format 4X5 equipment. Kathryn's training includes a BA degree in Art from Penn State, and an AAS degree in Commercial Photography from NVCC. Kathryn's fine art photography has been exhibited and won awards in one-person, group and juried shows in galleries such as the Art League and (former) Perry House in Old Town, the Ellipse in Arlington, and the (former) Rock Creek Art Barn in DC. She is also a juried exhibiting member of the Artisans United Gallery in Annandale. Additionally, she has been repeatedly invited by camera clubs in the region to judge their architectural subjects competitions. She is on the boards of several local arts organizations, including the Del Ray Artisans where she is a committed and active founding member of this dynamic community arts group, and exhibits regularly.

Her photography represents a deep love not only for her medium, but also for the essence of her subject. She has pursued photography as a form of expression for nearly 40 years, and although she will point her cameras at any subject in search of successful composition, her preference is to isolate and capture the details of life whether here in the US or in European and Mediterranean lands, or up close to colorful neon tubes. Much of her personal work has become abstraction, the art of removing from context and creating a new reality. Her Living Land, Mediterranean and Archtitecture series do indulge in the joy of fully representational imagery, but her Architecture in the Abstract and Frozen Neon series revel in the freedom of abstraction, inviting the viewer to enjoy life from a different perspective.

Digital Projection Competition

If you attended the Novice Digital Projection competition this month, you had an opportunity to see a catastrophic failure of the digital projection software. We attempted to use a function that we have never used in competition before which allows up to twelve of the remaining images to be projected on a single slide. I had tested the feature with less than spectacular results in the past, but after making some changes to the software to support PowerPoint 2007 the feature had worked flawlessly during testing.

As so often happens, the difference between testing and production uncovers unforeseen issues in software. We have not identified the specific issue that caused the PowerPoint Add-in to crash, but the failure forced us to reload the competition images and run through the images removing the ones that were no longer in play. This took what had to seem like an inordinate amount of time to anyone not frantically attempting to get the competition back together.

We will be doing more testing of this function, which has been frequently requested by judges, to see if we can get it working, or at least get it into a position where it will fail gracefully rather than locking the software and forcing us to start over again.

I apologize for the delay in what was already a long night and I hope that it does not persuade anyone to stop submitting digital images for competiton.

Images for Digital Competitions must be uploaded by 6 PM on the Sunday preceding the competition. The upload location is: http://nvps.org/dc/. Help for uploading can be found at: http://nvps.org/main//misc/digital-competition-info/ .

VA Gold Cup Steeplechase Races
Great Meadows, Plains, VA

May 3, 2008

Please come enjoy the 83rd running of the world famous Virginia Gold Cup steeplechase race, Saturday, May 3, 2008 at Great Meadow in The Plains, Virginia! The Virginia Gold Cup is a grand spring tradition as well as a fixture on the social calendar. Run in Fauquier County since 1922 and attended by over 45,000 spectators, this race is one of the largest and most popular sporting events in the greater Washington metropolitan area. Race day features seven hurdle and timber horses races, Jack Russell Terrier races, tent, tailgate and hat contests, a parachute demonstration, and over 30 vendor booths for shopping.

Please take a look at the web site for full details.  The races are ongoing all day, with a variety of scattered events such as dog races and parachute drops.  It is an event where you bring a picnic lunch, perhaps a lawn chair, your photo gear and spend the day touring the sites, or photographing from our tiered home location rail area.  I can have approximately 15-25 sign up for this.  Please don’t delay or you may miss out!

I have booked a SOUTH RAIL 1 reservation for the NVPS Field Trip.  My rail space package includes one reserved rail area 12’ x 20’, right up front (and near a jump supposedly), three General Admission car passes (which includes up to 6 passengers per vehicle) and six Members Hill Badges.  General Admission Car Passes run $75.00 for each additional vehicle, again up to six per vehicle.  We can rotate usage of the six Members Hill badges between those attending.  Admission and Rail 1 space costs will be split up among those participating.  This is an event which will run each attendee somewhere between $33- $40, depending on participation, which does not include food or beverages but will be a wonderful day of great photographic opportunities.

I will supply a pickup truck parked in our area, which will allow photographing from a somewhat higher elevation (two tiers of photographers) and storage of any articles you may wish.  I will also provide a table or two for a picnic style lunch.  All other vehicles associated with our group will be parked in the general, but very ample parking lots.  Bring your lawn chairs, photo gear and picnic.

I suspect this may be a very popular event, so please sign up early!

Be sure to supply your email address and phone number on the sign-up sheet so I will be able to notify you of updates.

Chincoteague Pony Swim
Chincoteague

August 1st
5:30 AM

Experience a unique and up-close view of the ponies of Chinconteague on their return trip to Assateague. Over 100 horses make the return trip, and they can often be seen frollicking in the sand once back on shore.

Roy Widgeon, member of the Virginia Beach Photography Club and resident of the Eastern Shore, has volunteered to put together trips to his home island for the club. For this trip, he's working with a friend and charter-boat captain to give VBPC members (and other area club members) a unique opportunity to get some great shots of these fine horses on their annual swim. Most boats go straight back to shore after the very short swim across by the ponies, but the captian of The Tortuga, a fellow amateur enthusiast, has promised to keep us taking photos for a couple of hours! The best shots of those shared with the Captain will receive credit on the captain's web page www.fishawn.com)!

Roy says, The best way to experience the pony swim is by boat as they make their way from shore to shore in late July. The major problem with this is that it is really expensive to get a spot on the boat for the initial swim. I have contacted a Chincoteague charter captain who has plenty of spots for the not so well known swim back of the horses on August 1st, and the captain is giving us the opportunity to fill the boat with photographers before he opens it up to the public.

August 1st
Chinconteague Island
5:30 a.m. Meet at Curtis Merritt Harbor
6:00 a.m. Boat departs harbor

· 50ft vessel with a cabin restroom
· for the past four years he has been the lead boat for the swim!
· Charter Boat Company: www.fishawn.com

Price per person $75.00 (as compared to $125 for initial swim) if we share the boat (in this case, we're not guaranteed a special two-hour photo tour)
If we fill the boat the cost will be only $50.00 per person (the captain is giving us a tremendous discount just for doing the legwork!)
If we nearly fill the boat, the captain will increase our costs slightly, divided by the number of total passengers. In either of these last cases, the captain will keep us on the water for a couple of hours just for photography.

Registration Deadline Feb 15th (Now extended to May 6th!)
Payment Deadline by 29th Feb (Now extended to May 20th!)

NVPS members should sign up through the club.

If you do this trip, you'll need to be in Chinconteague very early. You'll probably want to stay overnight, at least the night before. Roy's found a couple of nearby hotels with good rates

· Best Western Exmore, VA. they are about 44.4 miles away with a drive time of +- 1 hour http://www.easternshoreinn.com/
· Comfort INN Onley, VA. is about 32 miles away with a drive time of +- 46min. http://www.comfortinnonley.com/

Andy Klein
Journey to Find Personal Style
April 22, 2008

Photography has been an interest for Andy for a long time. After substantial cajoling, his parents bought a used Argus C3 when he was eleven. A Kodak Retina was next and its Schneider lens was quite capable. Andy spent some years in the black and white darkroom as student, printer, and teacher and moved over to color and B&W slides where he has been for many years.

Tutelage from a former Washington Post photographer, classes from Joe Miller, Freeman Patterson, The Maine Photographic Institute, The Santa Fe Photography School, and miscellaneous other coursework and mentors have helped Andy build his skills. He is an active member of NVPS, having held all the officer positions over the years.

Andy’s photographs have been published, won occasional prizes, sold, and supported court cases. He was a part-time wedding photographer for several years. He is a recent graduate of Joe Miller’s class on judging and has served as a camera club competition judge for a number of years.

Andy likes a variety of photographic subjects. He shoots Nikon and Leica digital cameras. He has been in the digital darkroom for now for several years and only recently has left film for digital capture.

The goal of this forum is to share Andy Klein's journey to find a personal style. Andy will present three personal portfolios, each containing about 30 photographs. As Freeman Patterson is wont to say, "The camera shoots both ways." So, each portfolio has personal meaning and captures a photographic passion. The discussion of the photographs will be about their personal meaning and how they have come to define a personal "style".

Susan Breen - Digital Projection

Susan Breen has been a member of NVPS since 2004.  Her interest in photography began at an early age when her parents entrusted her with documenting family outings and vacations.  However, her first learning experiences came when she joined NVPS and participated in workshops and competitions, listened, observed, absorbed and put into practice what she learned.  Her subjects range from landscapes to the minute close focus of flowers.

She has two loves in photography and one of them is photographing people - especially taking candid photographs of people in the streets of various cities and places she happens to be in.  And that is what she will present in the next upcoming Members Gallery Forum.

Frank Mertes - Prints

Frank Mertes received his undergraduate degree in Engineering from Northwestern University.  Subsequently he was awarded a Masters and the Doctorate in Nuclear Engineering from Iowa State University. He was employed as a Project Manager at TRW Defense and Space Systems Group in Washington, D.C.  In 1990 he resigned from TRW to devote more time to travel and photography.

In 1993, 1995, and 1997 Frank was named as Photographer of the Year by the Northern Virginia Photographic Society. Over 30 of his photographs have been accepted in juried at media art exhibits conducted by The Art League, Vienna Arts Society, and the Fairfax Council for the Arts. In 1998 his photograph of Antelope Canyon was selected for a first place award in the  Open Exhibition sponsored by the Arts Council of Fairfax County and juried by J. Carter Brown, Director Emeritus of the National Gallery. His photographs are currently available for purchase at the Art League Gallery in the Torpedo Factory, Alexandria.

Frank has photographed Western Europe in depth during 25 trips to the Continent.  He also has photographed extensively in South America, the Orient, Morocco, and Kenya, as well as in the United States.  When not traveling, he resides with his wife, Corinne,  in Oakton, Va.

Workshops

April 8, 2008
Critique
Ed Knepley, Warren Stanley, and Tom Sullivan

Several Alliance Camera club members have completed Joe Miller’s Seminar on Judging.  Three of them, Ed Knepley, Warren Stanley, and Tom Sullivan, will critique images April 8th, 7:30 PM, at the Dunn Loring Fire Station. Critiques are intended to give you educational feedback and enable you to learn about visual design and other attributes of good photography from observing the critique of images made by you and others.  We encourage you to consider submitting images that were taken on field trips, in response to recent workshop topics, or are eligible for the April Geometry in Photography- themed competition.

To give the “critquers” adequate time to discuss individual images there will be a limit of three images per person.   (Even with this image-number limit, it may not be possible to critique all submitted images depending on the number of entries.) You are encouraged to submit your pictures as digital or film slides, rather than prints, because they are easier for the audience to view. You should feel free, however, to bring prints, if you wish. Regardless of what media you submit, please designate your priority preferences—one, two, or three—in case we have too many entries. For film slides (and prints) we will have three trays (stacks) designated, 1, 2, and 3 into which you are to sort you pictures. The “critiquers” will critique all the 1-preferences before moving the 2’s. If you bring prints or film slides, please arrive several minutes early to sort your images in the correct stack or tray.

If you plan to submit digital slides, please attach them to an email addressed to Minnie Gallman (pggallman@verizon.net) and send them to her by 6 PM, Sunday, April 6th. Put “Critique Workshop Image(s)” in the Subject box. Images should not exceed 1024 pixels wide or 768 pixels high and the maximum file size is under 1 megabyte.  Please name your digital slides by designating the preference first, followed by your name, and title; e.g., 1-Bill Prosser-Seneca Window.

If you have questions you may contact either Bill or Minnie.

Ed Knepley

Ed is a National Park Service VIP (Volunteer in Parks). He's been a volunteer photographer at Shenandoah National Park since 2004.

This year is the 75th anniversary of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The National Park Service is creating displays in honor of the event. They are using one of Ed's photos for their feature poster and for large displays. Also, the poster will be sold by the Shenandoah National Park Association.

The statue is "Iron Mike". Mike was recently created and installed in front of the main Shenandoah National Park visitor center - the Byrd Center. Ed was down on all fours in the water shown in the photo. It was his favorite kind of park photography day with clouds, fog and precipitation.

The photos also will appear in the Virginia Living Magazine, plus the park is doing an article on Ed in an upcoming issue of the park visitor guide, Shenandoah Overlook. Who said that volunteers don't get paid?

Ed asks that when you see him, please stick a pin in him to deflate his swelled head.

That Creep!

New member, Georgette Grossman, was plagued by lens creep with her Nikon 18-200 mm lens. Whenever she aimed downward, the lens would extend. She researched the problem via Google and found a solution at: http://www.pbase.com/regcoulterphotography/nikon_18200_fix. The solution involves slipping an O-Ring over the lens. The drawback is that it makes the zooming a little stiff, but you can always roll the O-ring back to loosen up the focusing and then roll it back to the anti-creep sweet spot (see photo at right) whenever you want. She obtained 25 rings from E-Bay and is willing to share with other Nikon lens owners. Lens with O-Ring

New Release: Cankon 41

In an unprecedented move, two camera manufacturing giants have collaborated to produce a new camera with something for everyone.  Canon and Nikon have jointly announced the Cankon 41. It comes with a 41 Megapixal full frame foveon sensor. It is designed to far surpass images possible with either company’s current offerings.  In addition, the Cankon 41 operates as a film camera through its advanced mirroring system that can direct the light coming through the lens at either medium.  Moreover, it can switch between the two modes so rapidly, that virtually the same image can be captured in both places with one press of the shutter.

As one might expect, the camera comes with two sets of lens adaptors, making it usable with your current lenses, whether they’re Canon or Nikon. There are optional adaptors to permit Zeiss and Leica lenses to be used as well. Similarly, either Nikon or Canon flashes can be mounted and will provide full through-the-lens advanced metering.

The perspective control feature automatically shifts the sensor in relation to the lens to avoid those nasty perspective problems.  The Cankon 41 allows you to say “goodbye” to leaning buildings!

One feature, not seen in either manufacturer’s line previously is the patented composition advisor. There is a rule-of-thirds indicator that illuminates in the viewfinder when the subject is at one of the power spots in the frame. The advanced microcomputer in the camera is also capable of identifying and highlighting in the viewfinder, geometric patterns (both subject- and design-based), rhythmic repetitions and esthetic balance. Up/down/left/right indicators illuminate to direct the photographer to move the camera to capture a superior picture.

One enthusiastic prototype tester said, “If only they had put legs on the camera, I’d be able to send it out on its own early in the morning and go back to sleep, confident that I’d have some award winning images when it returned.”

The new Cankon 41 goes on sale April 1st and has a list price of $4,108.

LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph
Charlottesville, VA
June 12-14, 2008

Last year Charlottesville, Virginia hosted the first annual LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph.  We transformed the historic downtown Charlottesville into a "living image" with world-class photography exhibitions, outdoor projections, master presentations, film screenings, and special events.  This coming June 12-14, we will do it all over again with an all-new lineup of photographers, including our three featured artists: Mary Ellen Mark, Joel-Peter Witkin, and James Nachtwey.  Full details including a slideshow from last year can be found on our website: www.look3.org

New in 2008 are the LOOK3 Workshops and Project Critique Sessions.  Photographers of all skill levels will find invaluable instruction and experience by enrolling in classes taught by renowned photographers David Alan Harvey, William Albert Allard, Eugene Richards and Lynn Johnson. The shooting workshops will be intense 5-day courses (June 7-12) in which students will craft a body of work from start to finish during the week, learn to work under a deadline, edit and sequence their images, and develop and refine their skills as a shooter.

along the Pacific Coast between Cape Meares and Cannon Beach, and an evening Willamette River Dinner Cruise.  Monday: An all-day through the evening tour along the Columbia River Gorge between Portland and the city of Hood River, and a repeat of the evening Willamette River Dinner Cruise. The photo tour on Tuesday is an all-day Portland city tour.  Details of the classes haven’t been released yet.

To whet your appetite, here’s a picture of Mt. Hood, taken on a day trip from Portland late last year.
